November/December
The 2019 year brought a lot
of great speakers and
entertainment to our dinner
and luncheon programs—Ooh La La,
SLICE, Squeezeplay, the
Sycamore Community Band and
Sound Body Jazz entertained us.
Speakers from the
Cincinnati Museum
Center, the Cincinnati
Observatory and
Circle Tail, among others,
enlightened us!
Our next 55+ Dinner will take place on
Wednesday, February 19 at 6:00 p.m.
and the next luncheon will take place on
Thursday, February 20 at 11:30 a.m.
Details about the programs,
as well as registration
information, will be
available in the January
2020 newsletter.
On Monday, March 30, we will once again host
a Life Management Skills Workshop here at
Good Shepherd in the Community Room.
These evening workshops started in July of 2016
and have addressed many varied and important
topics such as Elder Law, Senior Technology Tips, Retirement
Benefits and End of Life Issues among others. The topic for March’s
workshop will center around dementia and brain change related
challenges.
Most of us know someone, be it a friend or family member who has
dealt with, or is currently dealing with, some form of dementia. It is
a roller coaster ride of emotions, concern and change for everyone
involved. And even with the plethora of articles and information you
can find just a click away, it is still hard to know what to do or how to
manage this condition in the long-term when it affects someone you
know and love.
Although the speakers are yet to be confirmed, the evening will
address topics such as caregiving/caregiver support, where you can
go for reliable information, how to engage someone with dementia
both in the home and in the community, and more.
More information, including registration information, will be in the
January newsletter, but save the date!

2 019 c o m in g t o a c l o s e . . . As the 55+ Ministry
wraps up another
years’ worth of events
and activities, we turn
our attention to
planning for 2020. Here
are just a few snapshots
of 2019...
On Wednesday, June 12, we had over 40 folks board a
motorcoach for a trip to the Maria Stein Shrine where they
had guided tours of the museums and chapels. They
enjoyed lunch in the St. Henry Bake Shoppe and had
wonderful weather for an outdoor group photo!

We are still looking for a
volunteer to coordinate the
afternoon Euchre sessions.
The coordination of the group is
not complicated, but does
require monthly scheduling and
follow-up. If you are currently
playing in the afternoons
(or would like to) and are
interested in taking on this role,
please call Colleen Smith at
489-8815 ext.740 or email her
· Afternoon Euchre takes
place on the 4th Monday
of the month from
1:30 p.m.—3:30 p.m.
· You are not obligated to
play every month nor do
you need to be an expert
player!
The Community of the Good
Shepherd’s New Day Grief
Support Group offers the
opportunity to work through
the “tasks of grief” in a
supportive environment with
others who are also working
through the grieving process.
The holidays can be
particularly difficult when
you’re grieving.
If you or someone you know
is dealing with the death of a
loved one and could use
some help working through
the emotions and life changes
that come about as a result,
this structured program may
help.
A new program begins on
Monday, January 27 and
runs nine consecutive
Mondays through March 23.
The group meets in the
evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
in Room 13. If you have any
questions, please call Kathy
Teipen, Shelley Jensen or
Pegge Mirus. They can an-
swer your questions and/or
take care of registrations.
For more information,
call Kathy Teipen at
489-7489 or 782-9070,
Shelley Jensen at
891-9494 or
Pegge Mirus at
891-5178.
New program begins:
January 27, 2020 | 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Registrations for the 2020 Refresh Your Soul
Conference will open in mid-November. The
55+ Ministry promotes this conference as we have
found the topics they address to be of particular
relevance to our members. The topic for 2020 is
“Promoting Healthy Living.”
KEYNOTE SPEAKER Nick Buettner has led 17 expeditions to over six
continents around the world. Three of these
expeditions were to Blue Zones regions—places with
the longest life expectancy and where people reach age
100 more than anywhere else in the world.
FEATURED SPEAKERS
SLEEP: AN IMPORTANT INGREDIENT FOR BRAIN
HEALTH Jennifer Molano, MD will discuss the importance
of sleep and its impact on brain health. She will share
an overview of sleep and normal changes with aging
as well as a more in-depth discussion on how sleep
issues can affect changes in the brain.
CONNECT, ENGAGE AND ENJOY—LITTLE
THINGS THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING! Dave Caperton is a national speaker and author
who blends laughter and research to show how living
and working with intentional joy is an act of
leadership, courage and a disciplined will.
WHEN HELPING BECOMES HARMFUL Finding a sense of purpose in helping others is a
beautiful, gratifying experience. But when care
partners lose themselves in the process, their health
and well-being can suffer. Kelly Rogan, MS, LSW,
LICDC-CS will provide caregivers valuable insight
into codependency, compassion fatigue, and
resilience.
