Worthy Knights of Columbus

We have just finished up November and are now at the beginning of our new Liturgical year; which starts with Advent in early December.

I appreciate all the wonderful assistance we have received from our Brother Knights over the past month, supporting many worthwhile events, initiatives and ongoing programs. Some men who come to mind include our weekly Breakfast Program Teams at St. Andrews, led by Brother Ron Civitarese, those who volunteer with the All-Star Reading Student Program as Mentors, our Rosary Apostolate Volunteers, under the direction of Brother Mario Peluso, the men who consistently help out at Mary Mother of God Church stuffing envelopes, assisting in providing St. Vincent de Paul services and leading our Parish Youth Halo Team, our Special Olympics volunteers for Basketball and Floor Hockey, managed by Brother Bingo Rivera. What an incredibly gifted, giving and active group of service and charity minded men.

November ushered in the start of the Keep Christ in Christmas campaign, our Remembrance Day Parade participation, the joint Council/Assembly Memorial Mass where the names of our deceased members are read out and remembered and the continuance of the Oakville 40 Days for Life.

December is a time for focus on our families, for remembrance of those who are in need within our Parish, Town, Province, Country and around the

world. Please put your focus on Charity to good use during this time. Spend time with your loved ones, be of service to others, and strive to contribute to worthwhile programs and initiatives if you are able.

I am encouraged by the men who have joined with us this past week. They bring their own skills, passions, perspectives, experiences and gifts to our Council.

Please take a few moments to read through this newsletter to see where your skills and abilities can best help our community and others. For those who heard me speak from the pulpit at the Masses at the end of November heard my call to the men of our Parish which I will repeat here: You don’t need to do everything within our Council, please just do something!

Yours in Christ

David Fisher, Grand Knight

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ: Mark 13:33-37.

Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.

It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.

Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning.

May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping.

What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'"

Mission Statement Knights of Columbus are Catholic gentlemen committed to the exemplification of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Patriotism and the defense of the priesthood. The Order is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Order is unequivocal in its loyalty to the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on earth. It is firmly committed to the protection of human life, from conception to natural death, and to the preservation and defense of the family. It was upon these bedrock principles that the Order was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney over a century ago and our Order remains true to them today.

Special Recognition for Brother Joe Luciani On Thursday, November 29th, at the Annual Knight of Columbus Memorial Mass organized by Bishop Paul F. Reding Assembly 1981, for the deceased members of both of the local Oakville Councils as well as any Assembly members, a Ciborium was presented to the family of Joseph Luciani with his name engraved. This honour is managed by the Oakville Assembly for each member of the Fourth Degree who passes away within the past year. On hand to receive the engraved and blessed vessel, which stores the consecrated hosts of the sacrament of Holy Communion, was Joe’s wife, Carol Bertucci Luciani. Carol has requested that it be sent to Belize, Belize on the eastern coast of Central America, to a church which she and Joe raised funds to build.

KofC "To Be A Patriot" Program Special thanks to Brian Melanson, the current Principal at St. John School, for inviting the Grand Knight of Council 14446, David Fisher, to speak the St. John Remembrance Day Liturgy on November 10th at 10:45 am. Although St. John's is a relatively small school, the reception was warm, the students were incredibly respectful and the ceremony was reflective and special.

Donation to Crime Stoppers of Halton In memory of Brother Joe Luciani who put forward Crime Stoppers as an organization for our Council to support during our annual Charity vote, at our October General Meeting, our Council approved by way of vote a donation of $250.00 to Crime Stoppers of Halton. The cheque has been issued.

2017 Hockey Blast and the 2018 Basketball Free Throw Competitions

2017 HOCKEY BLAST – Oakville Council 14446 to host the World Championships The Knights of Columbus of the Mary Mother of God Council 14446 is, once again, sponsoring the KofC Hockey Blast competition. We have heard that we are the last remaining Council who is hosting this program worldwide. This program is designed for students to demonstrate the most important skill in hockey… shooting accuracy on goal. It is open to all boys and girls ages 9-13, regardless of ability.

The following seven schools were invited and have chosen to participate in 2017: Our Lady Peace, Holy Family, St. Johns, St. Andrews, St. Michaels, St. Gregory the Great, and St. Marguerite D’Youville.

In-school competitions were held with our Council’s Knights providing assistance during lunchtimes and/or during gym classes at the discretion of the designated faculty member from each school

The Council Championship competition is to be held this week on December 7th at 6:30 pm-9:00 pm at Loyola High School. The two top scoring boys and girls from each age group from each school have been invited to participate. The Special Olympic athletes from Oakville will also be invited to participate at this event.

2018 Basketball Free Throw Competition The 2018 Basketball Free Throw Competition will begin in early January of 2018 at each of our area schools, with the Oakville Council Championships scheduled for Saturday January 27th, from 9:00am to 11:00am at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School. Again, the top two boys and two girls from each age group will be invited.

All of our Oakville Catholic Elementary schools are being be invited to this event as it will be hosted and staffed by both Oakville Councils. Again, the Special Olympic athletes from Oakville will be invited to participate at this event.

Our Oakville Councils will also be hosting the District Level Championships in early February. We will need additional volunteers to assist with this event.

New Order for our Blue KofC Shirts I received word from our KofC Shirt provider, Jim Clarke, that the Ocean Blue colour we selected for our Council Golf Shirts is being discontinued and will only be available until supplies last. I have ordered 10 golf shirts to be embroidered with the 3rd Degree crest and our Council name. I have asked for 2 Medium shirts, 4 Large shirts, the 3 remaining XL shirts, and 1 2XL shirt. The shirts will cost $45.00 each.

Jim also explained in his email that he has teamed up with his embroiderer company, D T Embroidery in Georgetown, to try to sell off the inventory of the remaining Knights of Columbus apparel stock that was left when Ed "Whitey" Chmielewski, of White Eagle Marketing, passed away. Request for Refreshment Assistance – Friday December 8th, 2017 at MMOG December 8th, 2017 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and there will be an “Hour of Grace” held at 12:00pm (noon) and 7:00 pm at Mary Mother of God Church. At the end of each hour there will be a consecration to Jesus through Mary by those who wish to participate.

300 books (33days to morning glory) to prepare for the consecration were sold and the organizers hope to have about 200 people coming to the 7:00 pm “Hour of Grace” to say the consecration together at the end of the 33 days. They believe it will be a beautiful gathering.

The organizers, through Judith Nunn, have asked the Knights of Columbus to help by providing hot chocolate and some type of snack for a small fellowship gathering in the Narthex after the consecration; to be served around 8:00pm. Who can help with this?

Movember is over – but the struggle against prostate cancer continues…

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. The Movember Foundation is working to halve the number of deaths from prostate cancer by 2030, and I want to help them get there.

Brothers and Friends, many of you know that in November I started radiation to fight prostate cancer for the second time. It has been 12 years since I had my prostate removed to fight cancer for the first time. After a number of scans and tests it seems that radiation and hormone therapy is the best course of action. I am one of the lucky ones, early and ongoing testing have prevented it from spreading to my bones. In fact, testing showed an unrelated tumour in my kidney that was taken care of this summer.

From the Movember site here are our top five things to know, and do.

1. Make man time: Stay connected. Your friends are important and spending time with them is good for you. Catch up regularly, check in and make time.

2. Have open conversations: You don’t need to be an expert and you don’t have to be the sole solution, but being there for someone, listening and giving your time can be life-saving.

3. Know the numbers: At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it’s right for you to have a PSA test. If you are of African or Caribbean descent or have a father or brother with prostate cancer, you should be having this conversation at 45. Know your numbers, know your risk, talk to your doctor.

4. Know thy nuts. Simple: Get to know what’s normal for your testicles. Give them a check regularly and go to the doctor if something doesn’t feel right

5. Move, more: Add more activity to your day. Do more of what makes you feel good. · Take a walking meeting · Park further away from the station · Get off the bus a stop or two earlier · Instead of the lift, take the stairs · Cycle to work instead of driving

David Fisher – Grand Knight à Special note regarding this article:

Brother Rob submitted this article at the beginning of November, but our Newsletter was not published until now. Here is what I received from the campaign site regarding Brother Rob’s initiative:

“Thanks to donations from Family & Friends I exceed my target of $1,000 together you all donated $1,190. I had my second radiation treatment today and met with my oncologist Dr. Stanley Liu who was rocking a moustache. He told us that the Movember movement is the reason he and three other Doctors are able to do research on Prostate Cancer at Sunnybrook.

So thank you for your support and remember, ask a male friend how their PSA count is going.

Rob

Ps. Tomorrow I shave and kiss my wife.”

New SOW: Processing & handling transactions using Square Payment System Nov 16, 2017

General Comments:

In order to meet requests to accept payment from credit card and similar purchases at various events (etc. ticket sales for Dinner Dance, Specific Council Social functions), Mary Mother of God Council will, at the discretion of the current Grand Knight, Financial Secretary and Treasurer, accept payment through the use of the “Square” system. This requires a departure from our normal financial process, hence, the following process is suggested in order to meet and maintain the integrity of the financial system as required by the Knights of Columbus rules and regulations. This documentation only deals with the Council’s processes and rules regarding the management of funds through our financial systems. It does not deal with the process or transactional services and fees used by Square in processing transactions.

Process: Whenever the Square System is used to collect fees (in addition to all current systems).

Point of Sale: Processing payments through the Square System

1. Request for use of the Square System for an eventi. Each Event Organizer will request authorization to use the Square System to process charges for

their event through a letter, either in hard copy or via email, to both the Grand Knight and theDeputy Grand Knight.

ii. The Grand Knight, Financial Secretary (FS) and Treasurer will determine whether to authorizethe use of the Square System for the event or event purpose.

iii. The requesting Event Organizer will receive the Council 14446 Square System Processing Job Aidand acknowledge they understand the requirements of using the Square System. The SquareSystem Processing Job Aid is designed to assist the Event Organizer in their use of the tool. ThisJob Aid outlines the login process, setup process and reporting options and requirements whenusing the Square System.

2. Reporting requirements - End of Day Report (Daily Sales)i. Each Event Organizer will arrange to access the online Square System, review the DAILY SALES

report on-line (Square Account) to ensure all sales have been properly recorded and capture theDaily Sales information. (Reports can be printed from the Square online account and used toverify).

ii. Each Event Organizer will send a report, either in hard copy or via email, to the FinancialSecretary which outlines the daily sales, costs, and net amount that is being deposited to theCouncil Bank account through the Square System on a daily basis. This will allow the verificationof the daily amounts that should be received in the Council Bank account and balanced to theamount sold.o Special Note: This daily processing step when using the Square System is necessary as funds

are directly deposited to the Council Bank account bypassing the normal flow through theFinancial Secretary (FS). It is necessary to advise the FS so that he can properly record andadvise the Treasurer of the daily deposit amounts. This essentially is handled the same aswould be done if turning over cash to the FS. Because monies are directly deposited to theCouncil Bank account, they must be reported within 24 hours of sale to allow verification.

iii. The Event Organizer is responsible for submitting a FINAL SUMMARY of all sales and expenses.

Information regarding prayers should be directed to Grand Knight David Fisher at [email protected] (905) 617-0366 NOTE: Names have been removed from our active prayer list after appearing in two successive newsletters, unless an extension is requested through the Grand Knight. Also, our Grand Knight will be checking our website at: http://kofcknights.org/CouncilSite/prayers.asp?CNO=14446 for any new Prayer Requests each month to include in this publication. The website displays these prayer requests for up to one month and then they are hidden from public view. We ask that, before you submit prayer requests identifying individuals with health conditions, you obtain their consent and make sure that they are aware and okay with you posting something online that will be visible and discoverable to the public. Before posting your Prayer Requests, please consider the following: 1. Less is best - post only general and not specific information 2. DO NOT publish detailed, health related prayer concerns 3. Consider this, if you were ill or in the hospital, how much detail would you want released about your condition?
