Dear Members,The Holiday Season is quickly approaching and the Clubhouse is filled with hustle and bustle in preparation. The events planned this season will give members an opportunity to enjoy all the festivities with familyand friends in creating those memorable moments.

We begin the festivities with our annual Ladies Holiday Ornament Exchange Luncheon scheduled for Wednesday, November 18. Thanksgiving Celebration Weekend kicks off Wednesday, November 25, with Bonfire & Music at the River Park, where you can enjoy fire-side buffet and live music by Mike Kavanaugh. Our popular Thanksgiving Day Buffet will be hosted on Thursday, November 26 and two seating times {12:30pm & 2:30pm} are available. If you are unable to join us for the Buffet, please keep in mind that we can prepare your entire traditional meal for pick-up with Turkeys on the Run. After you have filled yourself with a delicious Thanksgiving meal, plan to burn it off at our 5K Turkey Trot, Walk, Kid’s Walk or Run which takes place on Friday, November 27 at 8am. Please contact Concierge at 843-815-8494 to make your reservations for any of these great events.

Congratulations to the South Team for winning the 10th Annual North/South Challenge. This is the third year in a row the South team has been victorious in this spirited event! We may have to start calling the South Team “Team Euro”, just a thought! Please mark your calendars for the The “HAIG” (November 6 & 7), Senior Club Championship (November 20 & 21), and the Club Challenge (December 3-5). The Golf Shop’s yearly Holiday Wine and Cheese event is being held on December 10, from 5-7pm and their Annual Sale begins on Friday, December 18, - so please stop by for some fantastic deals and pick up some last minute items on your gift lists.

Our December holiday event schedule is filled with all the joy and excitement this season has to offer. On December 10, we will offer our traditional Taste of Chanukah Dinner - a delicious celebration of the Festival of Lights. A Progressive Dinner supporting Toys for Tots will take place on December 13 from 6-9pm. A festive menu of hors d’oeuvres and club full bar will be served at three member homes, ending with desserts and coffee at the Clubhouse. All attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots. Santa will be arriving for brunch with all children and grandchildren of Berkeley Hall on Sunday, December 15th. And make sure to save the date for the New Year’s Eve Gala “Bollywood Comes to Berkeley”.

Finally, our Annual Meeting will be held at 4pm on Friday, December 13. The membership will elect new members to the Board and we will include a general review of the Club’s performance and accomplishments this past year. Keep an eye out for important updates on our website, www.berekelyhallclub.com, along with other timely Club information.

Charleston-Style Golf CottagesThe Golf Cottages provide a sense of luxury and comfort that comes from attention to detail– from the perfect choices of furniture and furnishings to the complimentary arrival amenities. Each Cottage is beautifully decorated with either a traditional American look or a Vivid Hue Design. Your room will be stocked

with a variety of food and beverage items including wine, Gilchrist and Soames bath products and bathrobes prior to your arrival. The first level fea-tures a roomy living/dining area with entertainment center, most with 50” high definition flat screen televisions, as well as a fully stocked kitchen and gas fireplace. Two private master suites

flank each side of the living room, and each includes a king-sized bed, sleeper sofa, and well-appointed bath with double sinks and walk-in showers and a tub. These suites are each equipped with a refreshment center that includes a wet bar, microwave, bar refrigerator and 32” flat screen TV with digital cable. Javier the TailorJavier is in the clubhouse every Saturday morningbetween the hours of 9:30-11am to tailor clothing for our Members. After he takes your measure-ments in the locker room, he returns to his shop in Beaufort to complete the work, then returns the following Saturday to deliver your clothing. No appointments are necessary.

Barber Services Available in the ClubhouseKen Browning offers haircuts for both men and women every Friday and Saturday in the Clubhouse locker rooms. His hours are every Friday from 2:30-4:30pm and on Saturdays from 11:30 to 2:30pm. For special appointments, please call 912-441-6855.

ARB Update by Wendy Wagner, ARB Administrator

The year 2015 has been a very busy one for new residential construction in Berkeley Hall. Since January, 12 homes have been completed, work has begun on 6 more and the ARB is current re-viewing 8 new submittals. Presently, there are 298 homes that have been built and occupied in the community, which represent 54% build out.

As a reminder, the ARB should be contacted for approval of any renovation, modification or additions that affect the exte-rior of a home, including landscaping and painting. The Board meets the first and third Tuesday of each month, and all com-plete submittals and applicable submittal fees must be received one week prior to the meeting to be placed on their agenda.

Approval is not required for landscaping maintenance such as replacing dead or diseased material or adding items to exist-ing plant beds. However, any statuaries and yard decorations (ie. bird baths, statues, fountains, decorative planters) taller than 36” must be approved before they are placed in your yard. The ARB office is also responsible for approving tree remov-als and enforcement of the ARB Standards and the Covenants, and Bylaws for the community. If you have just purchased a lot or home in Berkeley Hall, we can provide you with a copy of the ARB Standards, provide property assistance and bring mat-ters before the Board. Berkeley Hall Awarded Emerald Club of the World

Berkeley Hall Club has recently been awarded the distinguished “Emerald Club of the World.” status by BoardRoom Magazine. This designation is the only merit based awards program in the private club industry, and because of that, it is one of the most prestigious and valuable designations that a private club can achieve. The designation is not a popu-larity contest, but rather involves a process by which every aspect of the club is evaluated on the basis of member experience. Other private clubs that hold this distinction include; Oakmont Country Club, Merion Golf Club, New York Athletic Club, Ocean Reef Club, Boca West Country Club, and Colleton River.

Following a site visit in July from a representative of the Distinguished Clubs of the World, Berkeley Hall was awarded the designation of Distinguished Emerald Club of the World, which is the highest level a club can achieve in their program. In addition to the Club’s Distinguished Emerald Club of the World status, six individual Department Heads that were awarded the “Distinguished Achievement in Leadership Award” for exceeding the scoring threshold in member experience. These top managers are; Michael Krause, Bob Ring, Ashleigh Whitmore, Chef John Soulia, and Derek Lemire. Congratu-lations to our entire team for a job well done, for this award validates the incredible job they all do for Berkeley Hall day in and day out.

8th Annual Thanksgiving Food DriveDrop off Dates: November 14-15

The ladies of Berkeley Hall are once again preparing for their an-nual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Through past efforts and gener-ous donations, they have been successful in supporting those in need during this holiday season. Food items may be dropped off at 84 Hopsewee Drive on Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15. If needed, a volunteer is willing come to your home and pick-up your donations. All food items collected will be delivered to Bluffton Self Help for distribution later in the week. Items need include: canned corn, canned peas, canned yams or sweet potatoes, boxed macaroni & cheese, boxed stuffing, cans or packages of gravy, canned cranberry jelly & sauce, canned chicken broth, corn bread mix & disposable muffin tins, boxed instant mash potatoes, canned fruit. Foil & turkey pans can also come in very handy. For the topping on the cake, please feel free to consider a grocer gift card to assist with turkey purchases, fresh produce or dairy. Please note, canned green beans are not needed due to an abundant supply. Thank you for your continued support!

THE BERKELEY HALL CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

COMMUNITY | LEADERSHIP | CARING

The Grants committee of the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has been hard at work reviewing and evaluating the grant requests received for the 2015 grant cycle. The committee intends to complete its evaluation and provide recommenda-tions to the Foundation’s trustees and the Berkeley Hall Board in late October, with the expectation that checks will be issued for approved projects in the month of November.

Twenty-one grant applications were submitted to the Founda-tion for this 2015 grant cycle. Organizations have requested funding for projects that address the needs of low income families and children, victims of abuse, the elderly and in-firm, and individuals suffering from disabilities both physical and mental. The need is great in our community and it is through the past generosity of our Berkeley Hall membership that we will be able to help meet the requests of many of these organizations whose projects will support the most vulnerable individuals in Bluffton and neighboring Beaufort County.

There will be more information forthcoming on the 2015 grant recipients and the projects funded once the Founda-tion’s Trustees and the Berkeley Hall Board have considered the Grants Committee’s recommendations and finalized the list.

With the end of the year almost up on us, we also wanted to take this time to remind you of the opportunity to donate to the BH Charitable Foundation as part of your year-end tax planning. Donations to the Charitable Foundation made by December 31, 2015 will be deductible on your 2015 income taxes. In 2014 our Year End Appeal added more than $16,000 to our available cash resources. We are hoping to exceed that

amount in 2015. (Monies from the 2015 year end appeal will fund approved grants in 2016.) We thank you in advance for considering the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation as part of your 2015 year-end tax planning. Please remember that the Year End Appeal and the Charity Cup are the only two fundraising activities the Foundation held in 2015.

You might recall that early in previous years the Foundation paid grants every other year: in 2008, 2010, and 2012, and 2014 and held our major fundraising effort – the Charity Cup – every other year as well. (In 2013 we used some reserved monies to fund 12 small projects.) Beginning with 2015 we moved to a yearly grant cycle which greatly helps the organi-zations who are seeking project funding and must do yearly planning. We hope to continue in this vein going forward, but in order to fund grant requests each year, we need to do fundraising every year as well. Therefore, we intend to hold a Charity Cup event (and a Year End Appeal) every year.

As you know, through your generosity we had a very successful Charity Cup event this past Memorial Day! Next year, in 2016, we will again hold our Charity Cup event on Memorial Day – Monday May 30, 2016 – with the format expected to be similar to that of 2015. We hope you will “hold the date” and plan to Stay and Play on Memorial Day as part of this important and enjoyable fundraising effort!

Oyster Roasts are a Winter Ritual in the Lowcountry

Attending a Lowcountry Oyster Roast is a ritual in the winter for any true southerner, - whether you are a native or transplant. Have you ever considered how the oysters get from the marsh to the shuckin’ table? Well, coastal Carolinians have been harvesting oysters for thousands of years. Ancient Shell Middens, found along backwater creeks, are evidence of Native Americans’ appetite for

this saltmarsh delicacy. Southern planters considered serving oysters – prepared in myriad ways - the only way to impress northern visitors. It’s said that Czar Nicholas insisted on being served Carolina oysters during his reign.

This year, the season began in mid-September and runs through April. Local watermen, clad in heavy boots and thick gloves, take their bateaus or skiffs up into the oyster beds between mid and low tide. Using a mallet or oyster rake, large clumps of the gray and craggy filter feeding bivalve are broken off. Back at the dock, the harvest is rinsed, then divided into those to be shucked and those that will end up at your oyster roast.

Oysters are only as good as the water in which they grow. It is imperative that we protect and maintain our pristine estuarine environment to ensure the quality of our oysters. We invite you to tour the Okatie River and observe the impressive oyster beds, with Eric Burns, our Master Captain and Certified Naturalist with Marshgrass Adventures. Please remember to bring along your binoculars!

Berkeley Hall Members Participate in USGA & Canadian Events Congratulations to Maggie Leef on qualifying for and playing in the 2015 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Tournament played at the Hillwood Country Club in Nashville, TN. One hundred and thirty-two ladies went 36-holes of qualifying before moving into the Match play portion of the tournament for the low 64 play-ers. Maggie qualified in the 48th spot with scores of 81 and 79 in the stroke play and made it all the way to the quarter finals of the match play before Karen Garcia was able to fend her off and earn the 2 & 1 victory. Garcia went on to win the tournament the next day in the finals. Congratulations to Maggie on her fantastic play!

Congratulations to Carol Dulude who participated in the Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur & Senior Championships on August 26-28 at the Sawmill Creek Golf Resort & Spa in Camlachie, Ontario. Carol posted rounds of 77, 81 and 80 in route to a 22nd place finish in the field of 97 players. Congratulations to Carol on her great play!

Professional Appointments and Promotions to the Golf StaffWe are pleased to announce that Adam Kushner has accepted the position of Director of Golf at Berkeley Hall and will assume his responsibilities on Monday, November 16. Adam graduated from Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina with a Bachelors of Business Administration and Professional Golf Management.

He began his career as an Intern at The Kahkwa Club in Erie, PA, before moving on to Pinehurst Resort and The Country Club in Pinehurst, PA. He then became the Assistant Professional at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA, and for the past five years has been the Head Golf Professional at The Country Club of North Carolina where he has been for the past 5 years.

Adam is a PGA of America Class “A” Member and enjoys volunteering in vari-ous youth golf programs. Recently, he was site coordinator for a program that instructs juniors from inner city schools on etiquette and fundamentals of golf.

We also want to welcome Kellie Dippel to the golf staff. Kellie is a PGA Apprentice and currently working towards her PGA Class “A” membership. Kellie is from Indianapolis, Indiana and played Divi-sion I college golf at Indiana University. She has been the Assistant Professional at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis for the past 2

years. In her free time, Kellie enjoys being outside, volunteering, and rooting for the Indianapolis Colts.

Charles Fox has been promoted to Senior Assistant Golf Profes-sional. Charles joined Berkeley Hall in 2010 as a Bag Drop Atten-dant. He has since progressed through the ranks of our golf op-erations to become our Senior Assistant Golf Professional. Charles became a PGA of America Class “A” Professional in July of this year.

Heritage Classic Foundations Distributes Charitable Donations to

5 Local OrganizationsThe Heritage Classic Foundation has recent-ly distributed the donations received from Members and supporters of the 16th Annual Players Amateur Golf Tournament that was held at Berkeley Hall July 9-12, 2015. Five local organizations shared nearly $9,200 in donations including; Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, Bluffton Self Help, Bluffton Boys and Girls Club, Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation, and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation.

Funds were collected from individuals who joined the 2-Club and pledged $2 for every two made during the tournament A total of 147 twos were recorded during the four-day event. Since its inception in 2013, the 2-Club has distributed over $52,000 to local charities.

North-South ChallengeIn a rain shortened 9-Hole North ~ South Challenge, The South team came out victorious for the 3rd year in a row by the narrow-est of margins. The North team scored 16.8 points compared to the South team that scored 16.4 points. It was the second small-est margin of victory in the tournaments 11 year history. The top performers from each team were Tony Presogna from the South team who scored 23 points and Reggie Griffin from the North team who also contributed 23 points. Overall, the North team is now ahead with 6 victories though the South team is right behind with 5. Thank you to all those that participated.

Preparing Warm Season Turf for the Fall and Winterby Chris Young, Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Preparing for Cooler TemperaturesAs the growing season for our warm season grasses came to an end, it was critical to prepare the Bermudagrass for the colder fall and winter temperatures. As the days have grown shorter and the nights cooler, plant growth

has stopped and the process of storing carbohydrates for the winter has begun. During this period, it is important to eliminate any stress from the turf grass in order for it to use all its energy to prepare for lower temperatures.

In order to relieve stress and enhance the process of carbohydrate stor-age, we raise the height on mowers and apply granular fertilizers that contain high rates of nitrogen and potassium. This helps to create a healthy, vibrant turf that stores carbohydrates before going dormant. Also, fungicides targeting leaf spots and root diseases are preventively sprayed throughout the fall. The maintenance crew preforms these measures to insure that the Bermudagrass has the best chance to survive golf traffic and cold weather during its period on dormancy.

Fall Insects that Affect Bermudagrass The armyworm is an aggressive pest that attacks the foliage of turf grass in the summer. Beginning in late August, the female armyworm will deposit hundreds of eggs on the blades of grass. In several days, these eggs will hatch into young worms and immediately begin feeding on the turf grass. The damage resembles the appearance of drought stricken turf. If left untreated, the armyworm population can become so abundant that the worms can actually consume up to five to ten acres of turf grass daily!!! In order to protect the turf, we applied a low residual contact insecticide on days that our courses are closed for routine maintenance.

The other pest that causes damage in late summer and early fall is the mole cricket. A mole crickets is capable of damaging the turf twice a year. As an adult, they will burrow thru the roots of grass in May and June as they mate and lay their eggs. The eggs then hatch into nymphs that burrow and feed on roots once again in August and September. This cycle repeats itself every year and restricts the ability of the turf grass to obtain water and nutrients. The burrowing also reduces the aesthetic appearance of the turf. We attempt to kill adult mole crickets before they begin mating in May by spreading a preventative granular insecticide. A contact insecticide is then used to control any remaining nymphs.

Performance of the Better Billy BunkersThe heavy rains we experienced across South Carolina in September became a true test for the overall performance of the “Better Billy Bun-ker” system that was installed on the South Course. The picture above

shows the new system in the front half of the bunker and the old system in the system in the back half. This illus-tration proves that we have made a good choice in install-ing “The Better Billy Bunker System”.

Winter Season and Frost DelaysAs winter approaches there will be occasional frost delays that will affect players with early morning tee times. By explaining the reason for frost delays can help golfers understand the purpose and reasoning for the delay.

Frost is basically frozen dew that has crystallized on the grass, making it hard and brittle. A blade of grass is actually ninety percent water, there-fore it also freezes with cold temperatures. Because of the short mow-ing height and fragile nature of the turf, putting greens are most affected by frost. Walking on frost-covered greens causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally.

The Golf Course Maintenance Department does not like to delay play, but they are more concerned about turf damage and maintaining quality of conditions on the course. Frost also creates a hardship on the maintenance staff as all course preparations are halting until thawing occurs. Mowing equipment can cause considerable damage to the turf, therefore our crews cannot maneuver around the courses to mow, change cup positions or even collect range balls. The goal is to have a beautifully maintained golf course for our members and guests to enjoy. By declaring a frost delay and waiting for the turf to thaw, we are protecting the quality of the playing surface not only for today but also for years to come.

This problem has the ability to ruin the game for any golfer. I’ve seen golfers spend thousands of dollars seek counseling, then sell their clubs and quit playing the game because they could not overcome the dreaded shanks. Most often, shanks occur when the club approaches the ball too far

from the outside, but every now and then, particularly with better players, shanks can be caused by the club approaching too far from the inside.

WHEN PRACTICINGTo correct a shank, try to keep your heart and emotions out of your practice session and consider the following to correct the problem. DO NOT move further away from the ball, as this will often exacerbate the problem. When practicing, count out 10 balls and follow this drill. Set up as you normally would with the clubhead centered behind the ball. Scrunch your toes towards your heels to keep you from leaning too far forward towards the ball. Make two practice swings from this starting position and swing the clubface inside the ball. Hit the shot making a determined effort to hit the ball well off the toe of the club, then repeat this 10 times without emotion.

WHEN PLAYINGIf you should hit a shank on the course, find an old divot and set up to it as you normally would. Scrunch your toes back towards your heels and make four practice swings as the clubface passes inside the divot. The next shot you play, do the same thing making sure you emphasize a toe-sided strike - You can do this, but the big challenge is keeping emotions at bay. Keep your head in the equation and you’ve got a chance.

STOP PULLING YOUR LEFT ARM INTO IMPACT AND START TURNING IT

To fix your chronic slicing, use left-arm action to square up the face at impact.

THE PROBLEMFrom the top of the swing, many players bring the club down through the ball with an aggressive pull of left arm. This mistake fails to get the clubface square through impact, causing weak slices and poor contact. Your distance will also suffer because you’re not compressing the ball, and your accuracy will be poor as well. Pulling usually puts you in a position where the back of your left hand faces well right of the target, which causes the clubface to be open. You need to be in a position where the back of your left hand is facing the target at impact, in order to square the clubface.

THE SOLUTIONTo improve the quality of your contact and hit the ball longer and straighter, you must stop pulling your left arm and instead allow it to rotate through the impact area. Here’s how:

STEP 1During your backswing, don’t just lift the club up. Instead, turn your shoulders and gently rotate your left arm (upper arm and forearm) in a clockwise direction. The clubface should also rotate in the same direction to allow it to open.

STEP 2As you swing the club down from the top, begin rotating your left arm in the opposite (counterclockwise) direction so that the clubface slowly begins to rotate back to square.

STEP 3At impact, get your left forearm and the back of your left hand facing the target – this is your key to get the clubface square. You should feel the back of your left hand turning down toward the ground a bit, which will help you compress the ball against the clubface.

STEP 4As you swing past impact, allow your left arm to continue to rotate so that the knuckles on your left hand turn towards the ground. This is how the majority of great players hit the ball, and it’s how you should too.

Are Crunches and Sit-Ups Hurting Your Golf Game?

Good posture is synonymous with good golf. One of the first things that a teaching pro will discuss with their students is the importance of maintaining good posture.

In picture # 1, Doug Weary illustrates the C-Posture that is typically seen on the golf course. Notice in his address position, how his upper back and shoulders are rounded and slumping forward. From this set-up, it’s very difficult for him to maintain his posture throughout the backswing without keeping his swing plane short and wide. Compare this to a more up-right and relaxed athletic pos-

ture he illustrates in picture #2. From this position, Doug can make a full shoulder turn and properly set the club at the top of his backswing.

Perhaps all of those crunches and sit-ups you’ve been doing may be contributing to bad posture on the golf course. Compare the curve in Doug’s back (illustration # 3) while he performs a crunch to the curve of his back in the C-Posture. Now consider all the other activities we perform during the day that are done in a hunched over position that continues to reinforce bad posture when playing golf.

We suggest that if you want to tone your abdominals, you perform planks and stability ball rollouts rather than crunches and sit-ups. This simple change in exercises may lead to an overall improvement to your golf game. Speak to one of our Fitness Center Trainers to learn more about exercises that are not only good for your body, but your golf game.

The Fitness Staff is very excited about this year’s Turkey Trot! We’re excited because dating back to 2008, the Turkey Trot has gotten bigger and better every year! This year, to encourage even more participation, the race will be held on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Typically, this is a day when Members have less of a busy schedule.

The 5K bike and fun race will begin at 8am, followed by the kid’s race at 9am. The bikers will start 2 minutes before the runners and follow the same course. The Kids Race will consist of only be 2 laps around the grass mall in front of the clubhouse. Once again, the Play Hard In Btown will be on hand to help us facilitate the race. They present a very professional atmosphere using chip timers, computer systems, and other special finish line equipment. We also will be offering post-race kegs of beer for racers and spectators!

There will be several divisions for both male and female runners: Under 15; 15-29; 30-49; 50-65 and 65+. There will be no age groups for the bikers. The awards will be presented to both female and male participants --for bikers there will be overall 1st place winners and for runners the top 1st -3rd place finishes. You may register any member of guest at the Fitness Center either in person or by calling 843.815.8985. You will however, be required to sign a waiver before participating in the race. When registering, we will need each racers name, age, sex and member name. The cost will be $25 Adults and $15 for Children 11 years and younger. Shirts and bibs may be picked-up on Thursday, November 26 at the Fitness Center or before the race on Friday morning. We look forward to seeing you there for another great race!

Resurfacing of the Har Tru Clay Courts We’re pleased to inform you that last month we re-surfaced all six-of the Har Tru Clay tennis courts at the Fitness Center.
