ICTSI ports among the world’s best infrastructure projects — World Finance

W orld Finance, a leading financial magazine based in the United Kingdom, has cited International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) as among the Project Finance Deals of the Year 2014 “The World’s Best Infrastructure Projects.”

Released in a supplement, World Finance presents Project Finance, together with the publication’s November – December 2014 issue, the best project finance index compiles the most impressive infrastructure projects and deals in the world.

“From solar plants and roadways to refinancing and restructuring deals, these projects stand out in their fields. Good infrastructure project proposals need to consider a multitude of factors, including, but not limited to, financing, timing, environmental impact and socioeconomic change,” says World Finance in its introduction on the awards.

“The projects and deals have gone the extra mile to satisfy all parties, and to ensure that work is carried out responsibly at all stages, and in all contexts,” it added.

A total of 17 project finance deals were cited by the publication with ICTSI receiving the Sponsor of the Year Award. The company was recognized for its “exceptional work in sponsoring a wide variety of deals.” It also described ICTSI as choosing to “embrace the pathway to global expansion.”

requirements, all ask for a degree of financial flexibility for ICTSI to deliver to the fullest,” the magazine said.

The projects include new concessions offered on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, takeover and upgrade of existing businesses including those with a strong BOT element on a concession basis, the development of a container terminal facility on a sub-concession basis, and the acquisition of a publicly listed company.

World Finance continues: “After years spent consolidating and expanding operations, ICTSI’s portfolio amounts to an impressive 29 terminals in 21 countries. The projects offer a brief insight into the company’s international ambitions and proven ability to manage complex financial dealings.”

In an interview with Ms. Hammond, Mr. O’Neil said that for a private operator like ICTSI, the basic structure is a concession lease: “Port authorities are reluctant to actually let go of ownership of these assets for understandable reasons, and what they do is give us a 25 year lease to work on the facility, operate it, take responsibility for all the capital investment, the maintenance of the equipment, and to generate an efficient service. At the end of the 25 year lease, what the contract will say is that actually all the assets revert to the port authority, so we’re really a long term tenant and operator of these facilities.”

He adds: “The issues are common across many of these ports, so we’re often solving a problem we’ve solved somewhere else, which helps. There is a local component; it’s very important. In most of our locations, we prefer to have a local national as the resident CEO. That I think is much easier for facilitating whatever arrangements you have to make with the local port authority, being perceived to be a good corporate citizen. But overall, if you’re operating efficiently and you’re investing in the facility and improving the general efficiency, they’ll be happy.”

The magazine also featured an article contributed by Rafael J. Consing, ICTSI Vice President and Treasurer, titled “The PPP Challenge,” where he underpinned how port concessions and resale opportunities worldwide provided the platform for ICTSI’s expansion.

Meanwhile, Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce S.A., a joint venture between ICTSI and PSA International, won the publication’s Port Deal of the Year for the Aguadulce Port Terminal Concession in Buenaventura, Colombia.

ICTSI expands MICT yard capacityInternational Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has added four hectares of yard capacity at its flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) with the recent completion of Phase 1 of its Berth 7 yard development.

Intended to be an empty container depot (ECD), the area can store up to 4,300 containers in moderate wind conditions. Adjacent to it is another two hectares, which will be completed by yearend.

Upon completion, the entire area of Phase 1 will store 6,500 20-foot equivalent units (TEU). The new yard is part of ICTSI’s US$35

International certification body Lloyd’s Register of Quality Assurance (LRQA) has certified in 30 October the Integrated Management System (IMS) of Contecon Manzanillo S.A. (CMSA), recognizing CMSA’s best practices in the construction and operation of the Specialized Container Terminal - 2 (SCT-2) in the Port of Manzanillo, Mexico’s largest and busiest port.

The certification is unique in its class, demonstrating the CMSA’s commitment to position Manzanillo as the Mexican Pacific’s gateway for foreign trade and boost the port’s global competitiveness. The certification covers four main standards: ISO 9001: 2008 (quality); ISO 14001: 2004 (environmental); ISO 28000: 2007 (safety in the supply chain); and OHSAS 18001: 2007 (occupational health and safety).

staff to continue working hard with the goal of providing exceptional port logistics service.

He also credited the company’s efficient process for helping them exceed their productivity targets during the first year of operation, which in turn paved the way for SCT 2 to become the first and only container terminal in Mexico to achieve comprehensive certification for the four ISO standards.

In a related development, CMSA received an environmental quality certification in November from the Procuraduria Federal de Proteccion Al Ambiente (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection or PROFEPA) for compliance with environmental standards set by the Mexican government.

The certification, which is part of the National Environmental Audit Program, signifies compliance with local, statewide and national environmental standards. It also cites CMSA for responsible project planning and trade execution.

Mr. Gutierrez reiterated the company’s commitment to a clean and responsible operation, citing the need to promote sustainable, ethical and transparent

The audit highlighted the Company’s adherence to federal and local environmental laws, as well as compliance with official Mexican standards as mandated by the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources. The environmental quality certificate includes compliance with regulations related to: risk and environmental management, water, waste, energy, environmental emergencies, air and noise, and natural areas, forests and wildlife.

Mr. Gutierrez also viewed the certification as a way to foster a more sustainable operation environment characterized by reduced water and energy consumption, and reduced waste production – all of which helps preserve the environment while reducing the Company’s operating costs.

EKR in Forbes Global CEO Conference, Singapore

Enrique K. Razon Jr., ICTSI Chairman and President, explained how the Aquino administration has fast-tracked government spending in infrastructure to further spur Philippine economic development. Mr. Razon was among the panelists in the “Destinations in the making” plenary of the 14th Forbes Global CEO conference last October at the Shangri La Singapore.

Enrique K. Razon Jr., Chairman and President of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), was among the invited speakers at the 14th Annual Forbes Global CEO Conference last 28 – 30 October in Singapore.

Some 450 of the world’s top business leaders gathered at the Shangri La Singapore for the annual conference. With the theme “The Next Horizon,” the conference focused on the evolution of success – how leaders can master progression, deal with disruption, and keep striving for future opportunities for growth and expansion.

Mr. Razon was a panelist in the conference’s sixth session, “Destinations in the making,” held in the afternoon of 29 October at the Island Ballroom of the Shangri La. The session focused on infrastructure development and the competitiveness and sustainability of cities in the region.

In a report by Rappler.com, Mr. Razon said that the Philippines is on its way up, but acknowledged the challenges the country still has to address.

Like Thailand and Indonesia, the Philippines has the “problem of having one major city which is really congested.” He

said this is something that will continue to be a problem, but that things are getting better by the day, due to the government.

“We have a high population growth rate and a big influx of immigrants from other parts of the country into the city. So we still need to develop and finance more of the basic infrastructure before we can get to the other side, and the government is addressing that now,” he said.

Mr. Razon added: “There are many more projects left to be done” and that the country has “lots of financial needs.” He remained optimistic, however, praising the government for its determined efforts.

Together with Mr. Razon in the panel were Stephen Riady, Executive Chairman, OUE Ltd. of Singapore; Kishin R. K., Chief Executive Officer, RB Capital Group of Singapore; Abhishek Lodha, Managing Director, Lodha Group of India; and Li Sanqi, Chief Scientist, Huawei of China. Cecilia Ma Zecha, Deputy Executive Director, Forbes Asia, was the session’s moderator.

Some 50 speakers from around the world took part in panel discussions. The sessions covered a diverse range of topics such as the outlook for the global economy, prospects in emerging markets and investment opportunities in sectors such as finance, technology, energy and real estate.

Panels also discussed best strategies for innovation, leadership and philanthropy.

The Forbes Global CEO Conference has been held in various cities in the Asia Pacific and the Middle East including Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Shanghai and Bali. The annual event provides a high-level platform for CEOs, entrepreneurs, tycoons and thought-leaders to discuss and debate issues of global concern and build vital relationships.

AGCT rolls out SAP ERPBy Iva RomanAdriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) in the Port of Rijeka, Croatia has been selected as the pilot terminal for the implementation of the SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for the ICTSI Group. Completed last May, the system is based on a global template designed and developed for ICTSI and its subsidiaries by the ICTSI Global Controllership Group in partnership with Envecon IT Systems Pvt. Ltd. (Envecon).

Change management workshop

A kick-off meeting was held last 11 June and was attended by the AGCT SAP Implementation Team, ICTSI SAP Implementation Team from Manila, and SAP development consultants from Envecon India and the Croatian SAP partner, ICE. The SAP ERP system in the ICTSI Croatian subsidiary was scheduled to go live on 13 October.

After four months of preparation, the system was successfully implemented with the support of the consultants. Other teams

involved in the project included AGCT’s Finance, Sales, Purchasing, Engineering, HRD and IT Departments.

The SAP GT Change Management program was simultaneously introduced with the SAP implementation. A workshop was held on 16 - 17 June facilitated by Roberto Locsin of the ICTSI Asia Pacific Regional Office, and Sanja Šijanec, HRD Manager of AGCT. The workshop introduced guidelines and support for management and work changes.

Learnings from the workshops were sustained by SAP newsletters and the formation of a special SAP Corner where all AGCT employees were updated on the SAP implementation statu. Change Management was simultaneously implemented and adjusted accordingly with all the phases of the SAP project to assist the participants in embracing the change.

Change Management was also a part of PMO work and meetings, which provided project insights and compatible influence on the project workflow. All of these efforts were meant to ensure timely execution of all SAP ERP system implementation phases and optimum company operation during each implementation stage.Rolled out were modules on finance,

controlling, purchasing, sales and distribution, material management and human resources. The module on sales and distribution was interfaced with the

AGCT Billing System, developed in-house, it was upgraded to fully interface with SAP. Material management was interfaced with ICAM, while the human resources module was interfaced with Status HRIS program.

AGCT’s strategic development plans rely on world-leading software solutions to the Company’s expected growth. These selected business solutions offer functionalities that make the Company more flexible.

A critical aspect of the implementation is the introduction of SAP’s sales and distribution module, which is interconnected with newly redesigned internal IT system of accounting services. The module was also connected with the existing NAVIS Terminal Operating System (TOS), which is responsible for the automation and computerization of the entire service cycle at AGCT. Every business action and decision – from

service orders using the web interface or EDI communications, manipulation of containers and cargo support by Navis TOS, to clearing services at AGCT Billing subsystem, among others – is covered by an appropriate process within SAP and other integrated IT systems.

A series of business processes were also performed simultaneously with the introduction of the new system, through the support of experienced SAP professionals from related industries. A milestone in the implementation was the transition to a highly computerized business environment that enables global availability and flexibility of AGCT’s services.

ICTSI Foundation launches day care centers in Balangiga, Eastern Samar

By Francis J G. BartolomeAround 200 day care children aged five years and below are now able to enjoy a more conducive learning environment.

Five day care centers damaged by Typhoon Yolanda in the historic town of Balangiga, Eastern Samar were completely renovated and refurbished through the assistance of the ICTSI Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the town’s Municipal Engineering Office and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.

The day care centers were re-opened after the turn over ceremony held last 23 October. Filipina C. Laurena, ICTSI Foundation’s Deputy Executive Director, and Bernardita A. Rosales, Councilor and the Officer-in-Charge to the Mayor’s Office of Balangiga, led the ceremony accompanied by representatives from the Foundation and the Municipal Government.

Barangay captains from Barangays Bacjao, Cansumangcay, Poblacion 1, Poblacion 2 and San Miguel expressed their gratitude for the repairs of their respective day care centers. Day care workers and residents witnessed the ribbon cutting and handing over of furniture and learning aids like children’s books, flashcards and writing materials.

The renovation of the centers was made possible through local and foreign donations received by ICTSI Foundation from ICTSI employees, partners and friends and various individuals and organizations.

ICTSI Supports KABAKA Foundation

International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) recently donated an Automated Chemistry Analyzer unit to the KABAKA Foundation as part of its continuous efforts to help the citizens of Manila.

The Automated Chemistry Analyzer will be housed in the newly opened, two-storey KABAKA Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center in Pandacan, Manila.

Chemistry analyzers are used in laboratories to test for analytes such as proteins, enzymes and electrolytes. They can be used to help monitor diseases such as diabetes, test for metabolic functions or cardiac markers and test for drugs of abuse.

KABAKA was founded in 1988 by Amado Bagatsing, then Congressman of the Fifth District of Manila.

Opportunities expand for the most vulnerable By Marie Bernadette De Guzman

ICTSI, SGV foundations support Regional Haven for Women and Home for GirlsThe physically and sexually abused, neglected women and youth temporarily housed in a social welfare facility in Palo, Leyte, a town hard hit by Typhoon Yolanda, can now focus on more productive opportunities.

ICTSI Foundation and the SGV Foundation partnered together to help improve the livelihood training facilities of the Regional Haven for Women and Home for Girls of the the Region 8 office of the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The institutions’ Livelihood Training Center was given an additional 16 new sewing machines and equipment to add to the center’s six existing units.

Residents in the institution no longer have to take turns in using the initial six sewing machines as the center can now accommodate 22 trainees per session. They can now improve their sewing skills all thanks to their exposure to hi-speed sewing and edging.

Restituto Macuto, Assistant Director of DSWD Regional Field Office VIII graced the occasion and inspired the audience to view Typhoon Yolanda as an event that also brought blessings. He challenged them to not lose hope despite of their difficult personal circumstances.

He thanked the ICTSI Foundation and the SGV Foundation for providing the long-sought assistance and promised to assist the Regional Haven for Women in their plan to further develop their training center to accommodate additional participants from the vicinity of Barangay Pawing. Foundation Staff led by Filipina C. Laurena, Deputy Executive Director, witnessed intermission numbers from representatives of the Regional Haven and Home for Girls during the turn-over ceremony. MICT HRD conducts WAVE seminarWith reports from Conn Dizon

The Human Resources Department (HRD) of ICTSI flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) conducted a two and half day seminar-workshop on Work Attitude Values Enhancement (WAVE). Held at Piña Colina, Tagaytay City last 21- 23 July. WAVE aims to help participants identify personal values that define their work attitude and behavior, and understand how their individual work attitudes affect organizational effectiveness. The seminar also focused on defining the organizational values that contribute to the achievement of Company objectives. Participants were also briefed on how they can commit to shared team values that are aligned with organizational objectives. Photo shows the first batch of employees attending WAVE.

Safety first: MICT employees at the safety training.

The Safety Department of ICTSI flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) successfully conducted a seminar on the proper handling of dangerous goods last 19 -21 November.

Held at the Training Center of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) in South Harbor, the three-day seminar was attended by 28 participants from different sections of the Terminal Operations Department: CY-Marine, CFS, Safety, GPW, OP Gates and CY Billing. The participants received training on five specific areas, namely:

• Hazardous cargo handling, hazard identifications, prevention and first aid applications• Stowage system• Transport system• Regulatory compliance to ensure mandatory safety and health standards pertinent to all

government policies/procedures• Environmental protections and managing safety programs The event was facilitated by Engr. Regner Gayramnon, PPA Training Officer, and was graced by

resource speakers Engr. Noli Villanueva, PPA Safety Specialist, and Engr. Arvin Dadulo.
