26th Annual Appalachian Children’s Shopping Spree(formerly known as Give A Child A Christmas)

Eighty-four children from Watauga County Schools – ten from each elementary school and four from the high school – will be chosen by the administration of each school to participate. Appalachian faculty, staff, and students assigned to individual children will help purchase essential clothing items at participating stores in our area. The 2006 goal is to raise contributions of $12,600 – $150 per child. All proceeds directly benefit the children identified by their respective Watauga County schools. Within the next few weeks, envelopes will be circulated to all departments to give faculty and staff an opportunity to help raise the funds needed to take children shopping. Please consider contributing when this envelope circulates in your department.

Make checks payable to ASU Staff Council, c/o Judy Cereghino, Family and Consumer Sciences (LS Dougherty) by Monday, December 4. Contributions will be taken through December 8. For additional information, contact Janice Voss (Ext. 2269; [email protected]) or Denise Marsh (Ext. 6314; [email protected]).

Note: A call for volunteer drivers and shoppers will be sent to faculty and staff during November. If you wish to volunteer now as a driver and/or shopper, contact Janice Voss by email at [email protected]. With you, we can make a difference! We appreciate your participation in this worthwhile project, and for your support of Staff Council and the children of Watauga County.

Appalachian State University Staff Council does not discriminate against students on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age or disability.

TINY DOUBLES is coming back to Boone on Saturday, NOVEMBER 18, 2006 from 9 am- 3PM at Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall (115 E. King St). A portion of the proceeds will benefit the ASU Staff Council Scholarship program. APPOINTMENT TIMES ARE ALMOST FULL! For more information or to schedule an appointment please contact Sali Gill-Johnson(828)262-6084 x101 (828) 264-3834 or [email protected]. Its the perfect Christmas, birthday and holiday gift idea!

ASU’s Staff Council would like to invite you to participate in A Cleaner World’s Give a Child a Coat program. This is an excellent program that has the potential to touch many families and is very easy to participate in. In the past 4 years, we have successfully collected and donated over 1,100 coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. Simply go home and check your closets for coats you no longer use. Drop them off at the locations below by November 10, 2006 and they will be delivered to the local dry cleaner where they will be cleaned and patched, if needed. The coats are then taken to the local Salvation Army (on Hwy 321) and given to children who need them. Adult-sized coats are also gladly accepted. Additionally, ASU Athletics will be collecting coats at the East and West gates during the November 4th football game.

Meagan Honaker, a student at Appalachian, accepts a special thank you from Staff Council. Over the last two years, Meagan, her mother and grandmother sewed over 200 hats and scarves for needy Watauga County children. The Children’s Shopping Spree committee organizes a shopping day for the children every December during which time the hats and scarves will be presented. The Children’s Shopping Spree now has a web site. Check it out at http://www.staffcouncil.appstate.edu/Childrens-Shopping-Spree.html

Martin Luther King Challenge

The 7th Annual MLK Challenge, sponsored by the A.C.T. Department, will be held January 15, 2007. When it began, this day of service was something unique to Appalachian and started as a result of seeing needs that could be met by faculty, staff and students donating their time. The MLK Challenge consists of 15 different service challenges. All projects are assigned as goals for the day to be completed by 5 pm.

Though it sounds exhausting to spend your day off as a “day on”, it is actually quite refreshing. If you would like to be a participant or a site leader, you may contact Jenny Koehn at 262-3032 or email [email protected]. The deadline for pre-registration is January 11, 2007. Sign up is first come first serve.
