We are all thrilled to be moving toward completion of our new music building as the 2019-2020 academic year begins. Planning is underway for the opening celebration anticipated for the fall of 2020. This facility will complete the Rice University Music and Performing Arts Center and provide an extraordinary new complex to showcase the artistry of our faculty and students. The centerpiece of the facility will be a beautiful and intimate 600-seat theater with rehearsal halls, practice rooms and faculty studios. With the theatre’s European-style, multi-tiered design and generous orchestra pit for musicians, it will be unique among U.S. university and conservatory facilities and a hallmark venue to welcome our supporters from the Houston community. The fall season begins with our annual homage to the victims of 9/11. The Rice Chorale, under the direction MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Concerto with Bianca Chambul, the 2019 Shepherd School Concerto Competition winner in the Woodwind, Brass, Harp and Percussion division and Haydn Symphony No. 101 in D Major (The Clock). The Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra’s opening performances on October 4 and 5 led by Maestro Larry Rachleff will showcase Verdi’s overture to La forza del destino and Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor . Our Professor of Opera and Director of Opera Studies Michael Heaston will lead the Shepherd School’s Opera Department in three performances of Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up and Kamala Sankaram’s Taking Up Serpents on November 1, 3 and 5. The performances will be conducted by guest Steven Osgood and represent a collaborative effort between the School’s opera and chamber orchestra programs. The Shepherd School Chamber Players, now in its third year, is a special initiative featuring the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra arranged in smaller ensembles of six or more musicians. The novel performance format is comprised of three consecutive, hour-long concerts interspersed with audience receptions. As the summer concludes, students and faculty return to campus, school begins and our concert schedule commences in short order. I encourage you to mark your calendars now and plan on joining us for yet another season of extraordinary concerts at The Shepherd School of Music.

We are all thrilled to be moving toward completion of our new music building as the 2019-2020 academic year begins. Planning is underway for the opening celebration anticipated for the fall of 2020. Alice Pratt Brown Hall is wheelchair accessible. Assistive listening devices may be available upon request for Stude Concert Hall events.

Road closure to West Lot 2 Laboratory Road, northwest of Alice Pratt Brown Hall, is closed for the construction of the new Loop Road project. The easiest way to access West Lot 2 is to enter campus via entrance #18 off Rice Boulevard. Traffic beyond West Lot 2 will not be permitted. When entering campus via entrance #17 at Shepherd Drive, turn left immediately after the George R. Brown Tennis Center. When entering campus via entrance #8 at Stockton Drive, turn left immediately after the Anderson-Clarke Center and follow signs to West Lot 2. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes our patrons, but we also look forward with great excitement to the opening of our new music building and the magnificent new space it will afford all of us.
