    PRSSA Member Spotlight

Adriana Hidalgo is a fourth year Political Science student

concentrating in public policy and political consulting. She has alsoearned a Spanish minor. Adriana has been a member of PRSSA for

one year and is looking forward to finishing her last year at Cal Poly

with PRSSA. She is very interested in Public Relations and dreams of

    working in sports or entertainment.

    1. What company or organization do you work for?

For the past seven months, I have worked as an intern at Public

Policy Solutions, Inc. Public Policy Solutions is a public relations and

political consulting firm located in Downtown San Luis Obispo. While

working there I performed a multitude of tasks and projects in both

individual and group settings. As an intern at PPS, I was assigned

different projects relating to media production, public relations

management, and also campaign field efforts.

    2. What is your favorite aspect of your internship?

My favorite thing about my internship is that although I am an intern, I am treated with the respect of an employee. My days

at PPS do not consist of scurrying to buy coffee and donuts, but rather executing work that is equally challenging to the

work of my supervisors and senior employees.

    3. What is a typical day for you on the job?

A typical day for me on the job is not usual. Almost every time I walk into the office there is some new and exciting

project that needs to be accomplished. Every day I work in a professional yet open environment that makes working

enjoyable, due to the people that surround me and the goal we all share.

    4. What is the most interesting project you completed on the job?

The most interesting campaign I completed on the job was a campaign for Bill Monning for State Senate. Not only was I

able to meet and befriend Assemblyman Monning, but also I was able to participate in a campaign that affected more than

solely San Luis Obispo County.5. What have you learned from your internship?

Through this experience I learned a great amount about the political world and the business of public relations. In regards

to politics, I have been able to participate in hands on experience in political campaigning. Through this internship Ive been

able to bring both of these worlds together and learn how the two of them share a mutually benefiting relationship. The PR

work I executed (i.e. media advisories, press releases, endorsement letters, etc.) is beyond significant to the process of

political campaigning. I learned how to use my public relations skills to sell my candidate to the public.6. Do you have any advice for member on obtaining internships?

My advice for obtaining an internship is to never stop looking. Opportunities for internships are everywhere. Every time you

meet an individual that works in a field that interests you, do not be afraid to network with them. Create a relationship and

set yourself up as an aspiring professional. It always comes down to passion, hard work, and who you know.

    Company: The Hollywood Reporter

    Title: Editorial/Photo Intern

    Graduation Date: March 2012

1.Where are you currently working?I am currently an editorial/photo intern for TheHollywood Reporter. This entails committing two,

eight-hour days per week in the office andattending red carpet and company events whennecessary or available. Since interning at The

Hollywood Reporter, I have had the opportunity to attend numerous red carpet, premiereand celebrity events where I interview celebrities and write published articles.

    2. What is your favorite part of your job?My favorite part of the job is the ability to learn firsthand from successful entertainmentreporters at my dream company. Having the access to pick their brains and ask them whenand how they got to where they are is what motivates me.

    3. Describe a typical day for you at work?A day at The Hollywood Reporter is never the same! Intern assignments vary greatly, butmy days can include transcribing celebrity interviews, attending the daily staff meeting, researching for staff writers, writing articles for web and print copy, filing paperwork andinterviewing celebrities, to name a few.

    4. What is the biggest differencefrom college and the workingworld?

The biggest difference between theworking world and college days is

my social life. I went from living with my best friends and seeing friends every day of the week tobecoming 90% less social than I was. Once you begin working and having a full-time schedule, finding the time to do social things during the weekdays is difficult. Finding a balance between work/internship and having a healthy social life is quite the task!

    5. What is the best advice that you can give to CP PRSSA members? When I was in college, I was so focused on getting as many leadership positions, extracurricularactivities and internships to grace my resume as I could. I would encourage all PRSSA members tobalance your social life and your school/work life. College is a once in a lifetime opportunity thatyou'll wish to have back once you graduate. Believe me, you will. Cross off as many bucket listitems as you can (you live in SLO, hello!) while also gaining experience in the PR field that youwould like to enter into.

    6. Any advice or tips on how to getinternships and jobs?

Do your research and don't expect ajob to fall into your lap. Research thecompanies that you would ideally liketo intern/work for and network withprofessionals in your field. One thingthat I have noticed since being in thework force is the separation of thosewho will do the bare minimum to get byand those who give 110% to their job.

Start training yourself in your workethic to be the employee that will standout for putting in the extra effort. Mostof all, don't get discouraged! Searchingfor and landing an internship or job canbe both daunting and tiring, but keepmotivated and don't give up. Your persistence and motivation will be recognized by the rightcompany that is the perfect fit for you.

    * Communicate the who, what, when,

where, why, and how.* Write short, easy to read sentences.* Do not address the client directly

(calling them you).* Do not refer to yourself or the
