Veteran’s Salute
The Huntsville Rotary Club assembled to celebrate Veterans’ Day with a special tribute to LTC. MB Etheredge, a decorated war hero and former president of Huntsville Rotary.
Rotarian and Huntsville attorney Shelley Solow led the prayer in both English and Hebrew, as well as the pledge of allegiance to the US and Texas flagsRotarian and noted musician Norman Ward led the Club in singing God Bless America. The club also sang happy birthday to visiting State Representative Lois Kolkhorst. Kolkhorst paid tribute to Col. Etheredge with a letter read by Rotarian Charlotte Oleinik, Executive Director o f the HEARTS Veterans Museum.
Museum Director Oleinik also related interesting stories of Etheredge’s youth and achievements after his service in the Army. These included his boxing prowess, service to siblings, and determination to win college degrees. He was the youngest person to ever become superintendent o f schools in Texas.
Rotarian Guy Hogue related events regarding Etheredge’s military leadership while researching Army documents and letters for Etheredge’s biography, <i> From Huntsville to Hell.<i> Etheredge’s bravery and valor is well documented, but more important attributes remained largely unknown. First, he was probably the only lieutenant to be elected commanding of ficer o f his unit since the Civil War. More notable than his many awards for heroism was the respect and af fection he earned from his men. His K Company, 3rd Battalion, 30th In fantry spearheaded most attacks of the 3rd Division. As a company commander, Etheredge frequently scouted ahead of his company to be sure it was safe for his men to proceed. His courage and determination won respect from his superior o f ficers as well as the men. The men would follow him anywhere. K Company was the vanguard of most attacks and almost always succeeded under Etheredge’s o ften brilliant leadership in meeting unexpected enemy resistance.
Other Rotary guests included Reva Bishop, companion of LTC. MB Etheredge, Nita Hogue, wife o f Guy Hogue, John Volkmer, father of President Jon Volkmer, as well as visiting Rotary scholars.President Volkmer reminded Rotarians of the upcoming Rotary Christmas Party December 6th.

Our giving goal for the Rotary Foundation is 100.00 per Rotarian for a total of 11,000.00. The
District Governor’s goal is at least one dollar per member for 100% participation. We will have
a contribution drive for this goal in April. Every member of the Rotary Club of Huntsville is
asked to contribute a minimum of at least 1.00, preferably 100.00 to help meet the club’s goal.
More details will be made available as April approaches.
Thanks to all who worked on the Crawfish Boil. A good time was had by all who
attended.
