The Fold Monthly Newsletter of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church November 2018 Greetings, GSUMC Family! As we get closer to the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, what is it that prompts us to turn to God and say “THANK YOU” for our blessings? Is it the net value of the stocks we may have? Is it the absence of serious illness? Is it the birth of a child? Just what is it that keeps our gratitude growing? As we show God’s love in our church and in our community, we continue to strengthen our own faith. We need to continue to scatter seeds of God’s love everywhere as we convey what it means to have "Open Minds, Open Doors, and Open Hearts". With your support we can plan another year of worship services and continue in ministries that impact the community. We will be able to support our many mission and service projects that our church sustains. May God continue to bless you and your family. The Fold Monthly Newsletter of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church

November 2018

Greetings, GSUMC Family!

May God also move you to support the ministries of Good Shepherd UMC in any way that you can. God calls us all to be filled with gratitude and to share our blessings with others. May you be blessed in this giving and receiving of God’s gifts.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Bob

Special Spaghetti Dinner A spaghetti dinner to benefit the Blessings In a Backpack program, which will receive 100% of all ticket sales as well as all donations, will be held on Friday, November 2nd from 5 PM to 7 PM at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.

GSUMC began the Blessings In a Backpack program here in our area after a challenge from our former District Superintendent Melanie Carey. She offered $1000 to churches in her district with the only stipulation being that she wanted some imagination used to put it to ‘work’ in our community.

The premise of this program is that kids who qualify for partial or full breakfast and lunch at school during the week may also need help with food on the weekends. So every week bags are packed with a variety of items and distributed to them. Not all kids who qualify accept the bags, which is a parental decision.

Please give consideration to helping on this important community outreach program for our church. You are needed! There are various times as well as things that need to be done, and not only during the actual dinner. Ways you can help:

Veggie preparation Thursday, Nov. 1st at 9 a.m. Fellowship Hall Prep Friday, Nov. 2nd at 10 a.m. Serving Dinner Friday, Nov. 2nd 5 - 7:00 pm Contribute a Dessert Clean Up Friday, Nov. 2nd 7:00 pm

None of the opportunities to help are difficult but your contribution of time and energy is very much appreciated! Take a few minutes to look at the sign-up sheet at the Opportunity Center in Fellowship Hall and find a spot that fits your schedule and then add your name. Mark your calendars for upcoming dinners: December 7th, February 1, 2019 & March 1, 2019.

Please contact Pam Post with any questions.

Advent Book Study The study this Advent will be the book, “Christmas: The Good The Bad & The Ugly” by Richard B. Wilke. We will study those whom we associate with the joy and celebration of Christmas - the wise men, the shepherds, and Joseph. Yet the author reminds us not to forget that the evil King Herod is also part of the Christmas story, and how it is because there is evil in our world that we so desperately needed - and need - a Savior. This is a four week study starting on Thursday November 29 through December 20. We will gather at 5:30 p.m. for about an hour or more if needed. If you have any questions see Jean Mackey.

Charge Conference Sunday, November 18 at 7:00 P.M.

The 2018 charge conference for Good Shepherd will be Sunday, November 18th at 7:00 PM. Please plan to attend our annual mee t ing f ac i l i t a t ed by t he D i s t r i c t Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Charles Boayue, Jr., as we rededicate ourselves to the work of being God’s church.

During the worship service on Sunday, November 18th, Good Shepherd will welcome several new members into our family. We see God's hand in sending our Brothers and Sisters in Christ from Warren Valley UMC to our door, and we are thankful they will now call Good Shepherd their church home.

JOY RIDEWe will begin our

holiday Joy Rides with Thanksgiving this

month.

For those who are not familiar with our Joy Ride, we make up homemade cookies, pack them up and deliver them to places in our community that are open and working on the holidays (first responders, hospitals, etc.).

It is such a wonderful outreach and the response we receive is overwhelming! We will have sign up sheets in the fellowship this month for those who would like to donate a dozen homemade cookies. If baking is not your thing perhaps you would like to grab a plate and drop them off at a designated place.

We will be posting more information about drop off times for the cookies and picking up a plate to deliver on Thanksgiving day.

Please consider contributing to this outreach program so we can let these people know just how much we appreciate all the work they do for our community.

DINNER AT DEARBORN FIRST UMC

Each year Dearborn First UMC houses homeless families the week of Thanksgiving. We at Good Shepherd contribute our time by helping prepare and serve a dinner one evening during the week.

This year we have been asked to help on Tuesday Nov. 20th. They normally request we arrive around 4:00 pm to begin preparation and then stay to clean up. We are always welcome to stay and eat and of course spend some time visiting with everyone.

We have been participating in this outreach mission with Dearborn First UMC for many, many years. Mark your calendars and plan on coming over and helping out however long you can, it is such a wonderful way to begin our Advent season!

Hot Cider Hustle 5K/ 15KSunday, November 4th

Cass Community Social Services has been designated as the non-profit recipient of funding from the Detroit Hot Cider Hustle. Ecclesiastes 3:11

Thank you to the Gardening Angels who planted, watered, and weeded the church gardens this year. Despite a very hot, humid summer, the flowers and shrubs thrived and flourished with the loving care of many hands.

Led by the aptly named Fauna Navarre, the gardening team included Jan Poush, Paula Turbett, Marti Boynton Tamaroglio, Erin Reas Williams, Alan Costantino, Jo Silanpaa, Carla Schneider, and Georgia Grovesteen,

God bless and thank you all for your time and effort. We apologize if anyone was missed in this acknowledgment, but we are no less grateful for your participation. You made God's house a truly magnificent sight for all to enjoy.

SPOTLIGHT MISSION GIVING OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2018

Good Shepherd UMC has a long-standing tradition for over 25 years of paying our Apportionments in full. We are proud of this accomplishment and take missional giving to the next level by qualifying as a Spotlight Church. This means we support eight additional missions within designated categories to further God’s Kingdom on earth. We LOVE GREATER, SERVE GREATER, and BE GREATER by committing monetarily to these local and global Christian outreaches for 2018:

Society of St. Andrew Potato Project We salvage tractor-trailer loads of potatoes and other produce that are rejected by commercial markets or potato chip factories due to slight imperfections in size, shape, sugar content, or surface blemishes.

Usually, these rejected loads end up at local landfills. Through the Potato and Produce Project, the Society of St. Andrew is able to redirect these 40,000-45,000-pound loads of fresh, nutritious produce to food banks, soup kitchens, food pantries, low income housing areas, local churches, and other hunger agencies for distribution to the poor.

Redford/Brightmoor Initiative Redford Brightmoor Initiative builds community and supports youth and adults to prepare for meaningful employment and service.

Liberia Task Force The Bishop Craig Children’s Village has been in operation since 2000 with primary support from the Detroit, West Michigan, West Ohio, Indiana and Liberia Annual Conferences. The center provides counseling, healthcare, education, and shelter to destitute youth in war- torn areas. In recent months children orphaned by Ebola have found help and hope at the Village.

Isaac Dunn (NOAH Missionary) The mission of the NOAH Project is to empower low income and homeless Detroiters to achieve stability by serving as the first step on the journey to self-sufficiency.

Mark & Rebecca Smallwood Mark and Rebecca have been with Red Bird Mission as teachers since August 1988 when Red Bird Mission School opened for the first full year as a private Christian School. Mark directs the vocal and instrumental music programs for the elementary, middle school and high school. Rebecca teaches intermediate level elementary classes.

Redbird Mission Red Bird Mission was founded in 1921 in the southeastern corner of Kentucky to provide education and Christian evangelism ministries to residents of the area.

United Methodist Urban Youth Alliance (Supporting UM Summer Camps)

The summer camp programs of the Michigan Area United Methodist Camping ministry are about creating lifelong, life-changing memories for young people in a safe, fun, and caring environment.

Heifer International Fill the Ark Join congregations to end hunger and poverty around the world by providing livestock and training to struggling communities.

Prayerfully consider a donation to any of these Spotlight Missions before the end of 2018 if you have not already done so. To donate, place your gift in an offering envelope and clearly mark your name and the word Spotlight along with the specific organization you wish to support.

Thank you for living out our Good Shepherd mission ….

With Christ as our guide, we strive to live out our faith by serving the spiritual and physical needs of our community and the world.
