Learning to Shag

Sarah Wilson

Sarah Wilson is a North Carolina native born in Salisbury but at the age of 6 her family moved to Hampton, Virginia where her dad worked at the shipyard. In 1971 Sarah graduated from Hampton High School and then attended Longwood College for a year before getting married. With her husband and two kids, a son and a daughter, she moved from Hampton to Roanoke in 1986. After the kids were grown she attended Mary Baldwin College, graduated in 2002, and received her MBA in 2006. Sarah worked for 30 years in Human Resources for three different companies. Now “non-employed” but not fully retired, Sarah is still looking.

After her husband died in 2000, Sarah decided to come back to North Carolina so she bought a home in South Mills. She has 4 granddaughters and 1 new great granddaughter born in February.

Sarah’s been shagging off and on for about three years. She’s quick to say she has no time for other hobbies since she is out on the town dancing almost every night of the week – BOTB, RCSC and Colonial. Sarah says Beverly and Clayton Twine are the first shag people she ever met. We’re all grateful they got Sarah away from ballroom and into shag.

Thanks to Joan & Tommy Moore, Annette & Lenny Peaden for teaching the

CONGRATULATIONS to Mary and Marty Littman for being inducted into the National Living Legends of Dance Saturday night in Virginia Beach. The ceremony was very impressive. Several couples from River City Shag Club were there to support Mary and Marty. Exhibitions were held to showcase shag, swing as well as the Junior Shag Team performed as couples and as a team…phenomenal weekend!

Our Saturday night began with a tour of the sights by Virgil and Crew. Some called us Virgins, so we had a lot to learn. The following two days were Fun Sunday and Fun Monday, live bands all day long; Fun

Monday was certainly that. Monday was the day we bought our lucky ticket for the golf cart. Susan got lucky on one $5 ticket out of thousands. The rest of the week was filled with great ocean views, walks on the beach, music and dancing. From our tour we knew we had a lot to learn. SOS offers various music genres from bubble gum to blues. It does not take long to find your niche and once you do you are set. You soon become one of the regulars. Each day offers dance lessons, attire from head to toe, CD’s so you will remember what you should have learned. Music, food, beverages, and friends are an endless supply. If you should want to take a break from dancing, North Myrtle Beach is a great location to travel from; Wilmington, Charleston and Georgetown are just a drive away. Great sights to see, delicious food and tantalizing shops. There is always something to do. One of the most comfortable aspects of SOS is you will always see someone you know, so there will be a place to sit or someone to spend your day or evening with. It was a great experience, if you have not been or wondering if you should…put it on your bucket list. GO. As virgins, you never know what you come home with…like a golf cart. We made lots of new friends. Dang, we’re so pleased we went finally after 4 years. Almost forgot to mention the Margarita party we had at our place. Wow! What a turn out and fun was had by all and all were able to walk away. See you all next year!!! Come thirsty.
