The raw beauty of Hawai`i Island draws visitors from across the globe who come to enjoy the beaches, water sports, hikes, unique wildlife and landscapes, and so much more. But along with the rising visitor count comes an increasing need to protect and preserve what lures people here in the first place.

“As we saw our visitor numbers jump in early 2018, we had conversa-tions with Hawai`i County and others about creating a tool that would educate

visitors and residents about how to appreciate the island responsibly,” says Ross Birch, executive director of the Island of Hawai`i Visitors Bureau. Thus, the Pono Pledge was born (see sidebar on page 3).

The concept is simple: Give visitors the information they need to stay safe and keep from doing unintended harm to the environment and ecosystem that makes Hawai`i such a special place in the world.

ENDANGERED SPECIES CONCERNSOf the 1,653 species listed as endangered or threatened in the United States, nearly a third (501 species) are found in Hawai`i. That’s nearly double the next highest state, California, which has 301. North Dakota has nine.

The endangered species found mainly or only in Hawai`i includes the Green Sea Turtle (honu), the Hawaiian Hoary Bat (`ōpe`ape`a), the Hawaiian Hawk (`io), the Hawaiian Monk Seal (ilio holo i ka uaua), and the state bird, the Nēnē Goose. There are many more.

The Pono Pledge seeks to make visi-tors aware that even seemingly innocent acts, such as applying sunscreen when going to the beach, can have harmful consequences, as scientists believe that products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate — two common ingredients in sunscreen — contribute to bleaching in coral reefs. Studies have estimated that up to 14,000 tons of sunscreen end

up in Hawai`i’s coral reefs every year. Consequently, state lawmakers passed a bill in 2018 that bans the sale and distri-bution of sunscreens containing those ingredients beginning in 2021.

Coral bleaching — which on Hawai`i Island disproportionately affects the Kohala Coast — not only deprives swimmers and snorkelers of a more colorful experience, but it lessens food supplies for fish and other undersea life, and thus the entire ecosystem is compromised. (It should also be noted that ocean warming is thought to be largely responsible for coral bleaching.)

“We promote the Pono Pledge at our booth on road trips, in our promotional messages and everywhere we can,” Birch says. “Group planners are using it as part of the pre-arrival package for their groups. Hotels have links to it on their websites. We’re spreading the message as far and wide as we can. We’re pro-moting the idea of ‘traveling pono.’ And that’s something that goes beyond our shores … people should be pono travelers everywhere they go.”

PONO TRAVELBirch says that the Pono Pledge is being used as the basis for similar initiatives on other Hawaiian Islands, as well as by the Hawai`i Convention & Visitors Bureau, particularly as it pertains to safety tips and cultural sensitivity. Plus, it is a program that has been embraced by many Hawai`i Island residents, several of whom have signed on as ambassadors.

“We hope when visitors come to visit our beautiful Hawai`i, that they come with an open mind and open heart,” says Pono Pledge ambassador and kahu (respected elder), Earl Regidor. “And be able to learn from the people that live here in hopes that they too will want to experience the beauty of the

culture, the history, the people, and of course the ‘āina (land).”

“What I think travel pono is about is being mind-ful of how you interact with the land,” says Soni Pomaski, restaurateur and another Pono Pledge ambassador. “Enjoy it, share it with people, but leave it as it is. Everything is alive and everything should be treated with reverence and respect, and I think that’s the best way to enjoy it.” p

PONO PLEDGEI pledge to be pono (righteous) on the island of Hawai`i.

I will mindfully seek wonder, but not wander where I do not belong.

I will not defy death for breathtaking photos, trespass or venture beyond safety.

I will mālama (care for) land and sea,and admire wildlife only from afar.

Molten lava will mesmerize me,but I will not disrupt its flow.

I will not take what is not mine, leaving lava rocks and sand as originally found.

I will heed ocean conditions, never turning my back to the Pacific.

When rain falls ma uka (inland),I will remain high above ground, out of rivers and streams.

I will embrace the island’s aloha spirit,as it embraces me.

Lawe i ka ma alea i kū`ono ono.“Take Wisdom and Make it Deep.”

It’s a Girl!On September 3, dolphin mother Kona gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The birth took place under a beautiful rainbow as the sun was setting over Dolphin Quest Hawai`i’s large, ocean-fed lagoon at the Hilton Waikoloa Village resort. Inspired by the brilliant Hawaiian sunset that glistened during her birth, the calf was named “Alaula” (pronounced allow-la) which means glowing sunset or last light at sunset in Hawaiian.

The public is invited to visit Dolphin Quest Hawai`i daily to observe the newest addition to its ohana. Marine mammal specialists are available to answer questions and share insights into how they care for mom and calf, and how participation in Dolphin Quest’s interactive programs supports the conservation of wild dolphin populations.

For more information please stop by Dolphin Quest or visit DolphinQuest.com. Be sure to like and subscribe on social media to view the calf birth video (youtube.com/watch?v=42EmEe94HpM) and receive updates.

Yoga Barre(808) 333-5378

Longtime island fitness instructor Brittany Isaac recently opened Yoga Barre in Queens' MarketPlace. She invites resort guests and island residents to sign up for one of the many daily classes offered, from Barre to Buti to TRX training, browse

the shop's thoughtfully curated collection of athletic wear (including Lululemon!) and enjoy a juice or tasty treat from an in-house juice bar.

"Yoga Barre is a fusion of fitness and yoga classes, a boutique for active beach life-styles, and juicery," Isaac says. "We bring together community members and visitors for a quality experience that can truly only be found in Hawai`i. Our goal is to bring fun and functionality into a daily routine, and give everyone access to top brands in athleisure wear, while featuring local designers and craftsmen who make technical and beautiful gear for our lifestyles. Think things like 'farm-to-face' reef-safe sunscreen, beach towels that can fit in a small purse that dry in minutes, and workout gear that can be worn from 'studio to street.' Isaac teaches some, but not all, of the classes at Yoga Barre. That's by design. "My goal is to balance my life with self-care," she says. And that's her goal for Yoga Barre patrons too: "I invite you to open yourself up to discover whatever you need most, and to come and get it," she says. "It's your turn, it's your time."
