Referral Campaign A Big Hit!Thanks to you, six new social, six national international and one non-resident membership families came on board from the Summer Incentive referral campaign! I love that we continue to add new neighbors with the new social program and that the Pauma Valley Airpark has experienced a bump in membership this past year, by adding six new pilot members. There are so many fun events coming up to kick off the new season, so please get to know each other, send me your referrals, and let’s have a great year together! Remember, I am open to your suggestions and comments to help keep Pauma Valley Country Club healthy and thriving.

The PVCC Garden Group has just returned from an exciting tour of the Sunnylands Home and Gardens built by Walter and Leonore Annenberg. We enjoyed a tour of the home’s important collection of impressionistic paintings and its lush gardens inspired by the artwork. This was an early sellout tour.

The Garden Group would like to invite you to plan for our next exciting events of the 2015-2016 season. Mark your calendars for the following events.

Women’s Golf AssociationAs I write this newsletter we are only a few days from re-opening our beautiful Pauma. The grass looks like green velvet. We have a busy and exciting season ahead for both the Women’s Association and The Club. It’s time to welcome new members and the return of the snowbirds.

From October 17th until the 31st Pauma Valley was honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We flew our new pink flags and poles on all 18 holes. October 22nd we held the annual Ellen Miller Short Game Tournament. This tournament, put on by the Women’s Association, is to honor the memory of Ellen Miller who believed in the importance of practicing your “short game” . (See The Winners Circle for tournament results.) On this same day we had a silent auction from 10:00-2:00 to raise money for a donation to the Susan G. Koman Charity for Breast Cancer. Many thanks to Eleanor Swinehart, Heidi Person, and Darlene Fauber for organizing this event which is raising money for this fund. The totals are being tallied now so stay tuned for the results in January/February newsletter. I want to thank everyone who donated new items, brunches, dinners, rounds of golf, and other items for the auction. Thanks to all of you who sponsored holes, attended the auction, and played in the tournament. A special thanks to Don Miller for his generous donation of over $500.00 to the Women’s Association to pay off the balance due on the Pink Flags. Congratulations to Heidi Person for her overall gross win of 48 to have her name on the Trophy. Most of all I thank the little Devil that made up this challenging short course. Ellen would have loved it!

Ladies Winter Cup Team play is in full swing. The games have been pushed up earlier than usual in hopes that El Nino will really come this year. The first match was against Morgan Run at Morgan Run. Pauma planned to pummel their opponents but problems presented by the Kikuya persisted and prevented many predictable shots. Pauma still won 73-71. The next match wasn’t as successful. Playing against Bernardo Heights at our very own course, on a beautiful day with a short shower in the morning, Bernardo Heights creamed us with a 81 1/2 – 62 ½. The greens were quite slow and our Pauma girls did not adapt as well as Bernardo Heights. Not to worry, Pauma will make a comeback.

On September 10th Pauma had a WSCGA Guest Day. It was appropriately named “Last Chance” before the club closed and before El Nino. Members were allowed three guests each. We had 48 players and guests represented from 17 different clubs. It was a very hot day but gorgeous. Everyone had a fun day and a great lunch. The winners are listed in the Winners Circle.

Ladies, remember to go on to The Women’s Association’s very own web page located on the Pauma Valley Country Club’s website. Log in at www.paumavalleycc.com and click on the members only column, then click on Women’s Association. You’ll be asked to log in. Your club number is your ID and your last name is your password. You’ll find all of the Women’s Association information, including the women’s roster, By-laws, Executive and Standing Committees, news, and upcoming events. If you’d like a Women’s Association Roster in print just ask Joyce at the Front Desk to print one for you.

There’s a new Ringer Sheet in the women’s locker room. Ringer is a game that usually runs for three months, where a golfer writes down every improved hole score she makes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. There’s a book on the table where you put your entire first score and scorecard in the book. You’ll also find the instructions. Please pay $5.00 to Suzie in the Pro Shop and tell her it’s for Ringer. This is a fun and rewarding game for all handicaps.

PickleballNow that the weather is cooling down I hope to see some of you out on the Pickleball Courts. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States for all ages. If you haven’t tried it we’re there to help. There are Pickleball paddles and balls available for your use at the courts. Organized play is on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:30 and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30. Come join us…Pickleball Rocks!

BridgeWednesday afternoon casual “play and learn” bridge will begin October 21st at 1:00 pm in the Clubhouse. All levels of ability are welcome. Watch for notices from Reatha or Sharon Mould. Round Robin bridge matches are underway now and will continue until spring. If you would like to be a spare, please contact Barb Trok at [email protected]. If you need a spare, you may contact any woman member not currently playing Round Robin, or anyone on the other team. Thursday Duplicate Bridge will continue as usual.

  • Want to Improve your Ball Striking?I would like to welcome everyone back to Pauma Valley Country Club for another exciting year of golf. As you may have noticed, Doug Rudolph and his staff have done a wonderful job on our golf course. Despite the water restrictions and the unusual humidity with high temperatures, Doug and his team were able to produce green plush playing conditions. To help keep these pristine conditions, it’s important for us to pay attention to roped off sensitive areas and course signage, as well as distancing carts 10 yards away from the greens and aprons at all times.

Let’s all do our part to keep the course conditions here at Pauma Valley Country Club something to be proud of. Thank you.

Pumpkin and Brown Sugar Crème BruleeWith fall days approaching when pumpkins are plentiful and dinner parties and family gatherings are being planned during November, I thought you might like this really scrumptious dessert. It is not hard to make and is definitely worth the effort when you receive all the ooh’s and ah’s!Enjoy! Colleen

Ingredients:1 pound pumpkin, canned or fresh1/2 cup sugar1/2 cup brown sugar - (packed)5 large egg yolks2 teaspoons vanilla1 teaspoon cinnamon

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 325°. Whisk pumpkin, sugar, brown sugar in bowl. Whisk in egg yolks and vanilla, then spices and salt. Bring cream just to boil in saucepan. Gradually whisk hot cream into pumpkin mixture.

    2. Divide mixture among individual 5 x 1 inch ramekins. Divide ramekins between roasting pans. Add enough hot water to pans to come halfway up sides of ramekins. Bake until custards are just set in center, about 35 minutes. Chill until cold, about 6 hours. DO AHEAD: Can be made 2 days ahead. Cover and keep chilled.

    3. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon raw sugar over custard. Using kitchen torch, melt sugar until deep amber.

    4. Refrigerate 15 minutes to allow sugar to harden. DO AHEAD: Can be made 1 hour ahead. Keep chilled.

    5. This recipe can also be made using 3-inch diameter ramekins with 1 1/4 inch high sides. Bake for about 50 minutes.

Health & FitnessHealth TipsThe new season has begun, and a lot of new and exciting programs coming our way, through Ronna our fitness guru and myself with our Ask A Nurse program each month, shuttle tour of the new Palomar Medical Center, members C.P.R. certification, and the Awareness Program, with information on what ALL of us should know regarding Fire Prevention, Paramedics, Security, our Community Services and pet safety.

To find out WHEN these programs will be held – watch for our HAPPENINGS e-mail each week, our newsletter, annual calendar, and of course our Health and Fitness webpage on Pauma Valley Country Club website. This webpage will not only update you on health programs coming to PVCC, it will also give you valuable information about our “GO TO” hospital–Palomar Medical. It will also tell you of activities in the surrounding area, like hiking, swimming, and exercise programs outside our gates, just minutes away.

The FLU CLINIC, that was held in conjunction with the Gift Fair, was a big success, as it always is. My favorite saying each year is – Get Shot and Then Go Shop – and many did! For those of you that DID NOT and HAVE NOT, had your flu shot, I encourage you to do so as we head into the Flu Season. You can get them at your local physician’s office, or easier yet, go to a CVS store up in Temecula or Escondido. It takes a couple weeks to really have the shot help you avoid getting the flu, or at least to lessen the effects of the flu, and it is an inexpensive investment in your personal health.

May we ALL have a healthy 2015-2016 season this year!!

Fitness TipsHolidays are approaching, so get a jump on losing those few extra pounds. Fitness classes continue Mondays at 3:00 pm, Wednesday and Fridays at 9:00 am. Be sure to attend the 8:00 am walks before the classes on Wednesdays and Fridays. Giving the gift of fitness or golf fitness to your family, friends, or yourself during the holidays is a gift that keeps giving. Gift certificates available. Please contact Ronna for specific information.

Save The DatesRonna and Jerry will continue to present interactive seminars combining golf fitness and golf swing mechanics. New next year will be small group on-the-range clinics with Ronna and Jerry following the seminars. This will allow members who attend the seminars a chance to implement what they learned in the seminars.

January 16th – K-Vest Seminar: Learn how pelvis to shoulder speed ratios can increase your club head speed, are your hips really driving your swing, do you have a proper acceleration, deceleration ratio and more. Clinics - January 20th and 27th

February 13th – Feet February: How do your feet work in the golf swing, walking the course and how your foot type affects them both. Using the Bodi Trak unit, we can monitor how your center of gravity shifts during your golf swing and how you can maximize better footwork during your swing. Clinics – February 17th and 24th

March (Date TBA) – Nutrition Talk: Back by popular demand as the PVCC members who attended the lecture this Summer gave many thumbs up and recommended repeating for all PVCC members.

Continue to look for the fitness and golf fitness tips in the Happenings emails, as education on how your body works is crucial in maintaining proper health. And, if you have a question or concern about an injury, please contact me for a FREE 15-minute consultation.
