AWARD WINNERS TheKlozetBar,DundeeThe Klozet Bar, Dundee deserve a great big “WELL DONE!” after scooping a whopping FIVE awards at their regional Best Bar None Awards in October. Their Gold awards included Best Dundee Bar, Best Independent Bar (Gay), Best Heart of the Community Bar and Best Public Awareness Bar. As a result of their great success they will be heading to the national finals for Scotland in March 2014!

As many of you will know, Best Bar None awards are granted to British alcohol vending organisations with long standing commitment to social responsibility and the safety of people using their premises. The awards aim to a) cut down on alcohol related crime and irresponsible drinking, b) encourage premises to be safer and c) provide a more social environment that will enable customers to relax and enjoy their evening.

The success of the team at the Klozet bar in Dundee is a fantastic achievement. Manager, Paul McLaren, said, “To receive one award is fantastic, to receive five in one night is amazing. The team is still buzzing!

“We all work really hard to ensure the Klozet bar is a relaxed, happening place and operate a strict no drugs, no vandalism, no attitude policy to ensure all our customers feel safe and relaxed. We’re really looking forward to heading to the national awards ceremony in March next year and have our fingers crossed on yet more recognition for all our hard work!”

SCARECROW fEStIVAl Dog&Partridge,CharnockRichard

When the annual Scarecrow Festival arrived in Charnock Richard, near Chorley in September, licensees, Lisa & Tony Woods were quick to put their pub at the heart of the action.

The weekend saw lots of wonderful scarecrow depictions throughout the village, including local hero and Olympic champion, Bradley Wiggins. Tony & Lisa created their own Disney theme with surrounding neighbours and their own pub lawn played host to Snow White and the seven dwars. Even Lisa & Tony got into the spirit of things and dressed up as Cruella de Ville and Buzz Lightyear!

Lisa said, “The Scarecrow Festival gave us a great opportunity to showcase the pub. We used the event to our full advantage and held our own music festival with lots of activities for the kids including face painting, mobile petting farm and hog roast. On the whole, the event not only raised

awareness of the pub but of our efforts to raise funds for a local children’s charity, The Legacy at Rainbow House.”

Through this event, Lisa & Tony demonstrate the importance of becoming involved in community events and making their pub the hub of the community. The event was a great success and we hope it will have a positive impact on the pub’s future. Well done to them both!

SEVEN STARSREFURBISHMENT

The Seven Stars in Smethwick, Birmingham is a large, busy and welcoming pub. With a straightforward, no frills, quality offering the pub is situated on a busy high street, next to lots of shops and eateries. It faces stiff competition from large managed house chains and as such the team have to work hard to ensure customers stay loyal.

In August, Trust Inns undertook a significant refurbishment project that saw the outlet close for 6 days so that both external and internal redecorations could take place. The bar serving area was made smaller (previously there had been a lot of unused space) to make way for new seating. New fixture and fittings completed the new look to create a modern, clean and welcoming trading area that has seen new and old customers alike re-visiting the outlet.

As our photos show, the outcome is really quite impressive.

NEWCASTLE ARMS REfURBISHMENt

The Newcastle Arms was a traditional watering hole situated on a busy street in Newcastle town centre. Earlier this year in September, Trust Inns implemented a comprehensive refurbishment project which saw the pub maintain its traditional roots but brought it firmly back in to the current century!

This involved a brand new back bar, new furnishings throughout and improved toilet facilities as well as new external signage and lighting.

In August of this year, Sky launched Sky Sports Pub Challenge, a brand new interactive, in-play, mobile app. Available exclusively to pub goers watching live Barclays Premier League football in official Sky Sports licensed venues, the free app is designed to drive profitable footfall while also creating unique match day experiences. By downloading the app, customers would have the opportunity to win weekly and monthly prizes.
