PILLAR TALK

NOW READ THIS: Members who are planning to attend the holiday banquet should Dlease note the deadline in the instructions given elsewhere in this Issue, and then immediately go to your telephones and sign up. I will leave a space here for you to go do that and then you can finish this piece later.

(Space)

Canadian members should remember that there are plenty of spare bedrooms in the Seattle area, so think twice before rejecting a long drive to Portland. You can break the trip up by staying at a member's house Friday night, driving down to Portland on Saturday, and then staying again in Seattle on Sunday night. Just give me a call on (206) 746-5198 and I will make the arrangements.

November is the month for election of officers for the coming year. Note that there Is a ballot elsewhere in this Mogazine (I hope some of you will fill it out and mail it because according to our bylaws the club is supposed to vote on officers). We have filled the vacated offices: Heinz Stromquist has volunteered to be the southern representative, Gil Stegen the secretary, and Craig Runions the newsletter editor. Thanks to each of you for offering to give your time for MOG-NW.

NORTH—END October 1992

Patriotism isn't dead. Our North End meeting was held on the night of the 2nd. Presidential Debate, but 9 of us showed up at Pazzos. We all assured each other we were recording the Debate on VCR's or we could see it over & over again as the news media analyzed it. Well enough of that. Loretta & I were joined or we joined Bert & Joanne, Pam & Gary, Craig, Mike, & Jim (No Morgans), we drove our E Type, First time out in 2=2' years and I declared ours to be the only sports car there, but Bert claimed Joanne SL Mercedes as a sports car, but I pointed out it isn't British.

Guess who won the raffle again? Pizza was excellent. Pazzos lost the use of the covered parking area and it wasn't easy to find parking within 2 blocks. So we will be at Godfathers at Totem Lake in Nov. Again I'll ask of you who live in Seattle & Eas-tside to locate a place for us. I know Godfathers is getting old and the traffic. heavier every year, so help us liven up our meetings, find, us some different feeding zones.

MOG South Social Meeting - October 20, 1992 The gathering of the faithful South Morganeers took place at the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse once again. Stromquists, Buffums, McClintons, Dwight, and Miles (albeit a bit late) all enjoyed catching up on the adventures (MOG and otherwise) of the past month Even politics took center stage for a while. The Sometimes Annual Kingpin Rally organized by Roscoe and Russ Nelson was a hit despite lower than hoped for attendance (3 Mogs, 2 others). We had a blast dashing all over the hills and valleys of Clark County Washington. Doug Barofsky & Son (Andrew) were first place in Mog class and Mike Miles & Son (Evan) were first in non-Mcg class. Only a few setbacks dampened what was otherwise a terrific time that all should take part in at the next opportunity. Next meeting also at Cornelius Pass Roadhouse, November 17, -7:00 pm.

The All Britt was just the start for Loretta & I as we are spending the next week on the road. We are going to miss Dennis & Jacque as they were going to make this rim with us.

We left the All Brit Sun at 1:30 with Bob Adair & Lynn Hawkins & Christian & Melvia Zimmermann in their AC, as they were heading home to Boisie and we were headed to Glacier, we also picked up a MGB as we all toured down the Columbia for Pendleton. Bob Adair led us out at a reasonable speed, than after gassing up the MGled and Adair brought up the rear. When Bob is in back he sort of trails off & gets further behind, (I remember this from a rim to CA. with Bob). Pretty soon hes out of sight, we stopped for ooffee and I suggested Bob lead out again. Now out in front he thinks he is Cannon Ball # 2 and we make it to Pendleton in short time.

In Pendleton we picked up food for dinner & headed out to a campground at which our friends stayed at on their way to the All Brit. We pitched our tents then ate & sipped some and talked Morgans & ACs' till bed time. Adair in his tent still talking and Lynn saying, quiet Bob, go to sleep.

At 6 AM Lynn & Bob were waking us up, the temp. was cold cold cold. We got up & had some hot tea. Christian built a fire so we could get warmed before we started out. We voted tops down. We broke camp and headed for LaGrand to have breakfast. Melvia was wrapped up in her sleeping bag as her & Christian had only wind breakers for costs. It was a cool ride down the mountain at 7 AM. The waitress said it was 34 in LaGrand & it was much colder in the mountains where we camped. After breakfast we said good by to Bob & Lynn & Christian & Melvia as they headed for Boisie and we went North to Enterprise OR. A Healey friend told us this would be a great rim from Enterprise to Lewiston. He was right, the views were great and traffic very low. Loretta suggested a side road that might take us over in-to Idaho around Lewiston, well after 30 min. driving we came to a house & found out the road wouldn't be passable for a Morgan, so back out we came and on the road to Lewis -bon & Missoula. Theres a road sign out side of Lewiston that says (Curves, next 77 miles). This was a great run, beautiful scenery and some tight curves to open sweeping ones. Its a easy 60 mph rim.

We stayed at Lolo Hot Springs and had a soakin their great big hot spa, real crummy (Yuck). The lodge was new & nice though. The next AM we headed for Flat Head Lake, top down, some rain, just about snow. We were on the road by 7AM and put the top up by 11AM, as it was getting colder. We were stopped by a couple who lived there and had a 64 Morgan, so we talked for a few minutes. Than we drove up to the West Glacier entrance and found the road was cbossed 20 miles in because of snow, but should be open in the morning. So we took the road around the park to the East side to St. Marys. Here we decided to head on up to Waterton Park in Alberta and spend the night. There the weather was clearing up nice. The wind was really blowing hard and cool, we had to tie in the tops of the side curtains to keep them on the car. We arrived in Waterton Park in plenty of time to pitch our tent by the lake. We stayed a little ways back from the lake because of the wind. Our little tent acted much like a kite and had to be well staked down.

As we came into the area we decided to see what the park was like for camping, if we didn't like it we would motel it. Well our tent site has a great view of the lake and were totally surrounded by mountains. After our camp was securred we drove around. Deer were all over, one walked up to a couple carrying groceries & sniffed their bags.

We went into the Prince of Whales Hotel & sat looking at the view sipping a hot toddy thinking we should have stayed there. I told Loretta I would go back & get our tent but we were both happy with our camp site. The view and setting of the Prince of Whales Hotel was absolutely extraordinary. Our only regret of the whole trip is that we didn't stay in the Prince of Whales Hotel. The deer just grazed around the tents, you had to be careful where you stepped. At 8AM we were packed and ready to roll out. We stopped at the hotel again to find employees warning people not to walk the paths around the hotel because a bear & her cubs were around the hotel. This was bear seasonas the snow was bringing them down. Loretta who has a great fear of bears was just dying to see one. She kept her camera in hand as we headed out, we even drove back roads, but no bears.

We went back across the boarder into Montana to St. Marys, as the road to the sun was open now across the Glacier Park. This is a 50 mile run and took us 3 hours. gorgeous views, it should be an all day trip just looking at everything.

We took the top off by 11AM and it was just great. We had sweat shirts, wind-breakers & Parkas on, it was cold but well worth it. McDorinald Lake is at the West end of the Road to the Sun andthe West border of the park. Here we decided to drive Northwest to Lake Koocanusa and find a place to camp. Here we came up-on a Russian fellow speaking very rough English who came up to me & said there were Morgans in his community in Russia & they did hill climbs, & what was an Amerioan doing driving such an English car. The road to and down Koocanusa Lake was still impressive with views and this time of the year traffic just wasn't.

We were disappointed in finding a camp site, every thing was for RV's or deep in-to the woods. One camp we looked at Loretta jumped & yelled BEAR, she seen a cub. I turned down a dirt lane and watched for the cub in the brush, being careful knowing mama bear would be close and the Morgan offers little protection,' and sure enough there she was looking at us from between two trees. Loretta was very exited to see a bear in the woods, but ofcourse wasn't about to camp there. We drove down the lake about 50 miles and halfway up the other side, with Loretta scout-ing out primitive camp sites with the binoculars & deciding no - way, ( we are just barely campers). If the Morrisons had been with us we would have felt a little more at ease (safetyin numbers I guess). Any way we finally ended up in a motel. in Libby, Montana at 9:30M.

The next morning I started the Morgan & heard rattling noise's. I found the (Chev) Alternator was just hanging there, two brackets were broken off. I walked to a Toro Lawnmower shop, and for $3.00 of welding and we were back on the road. And the bears were still the topic of conversation in this town because they were comming to town and just walking down the streets.

We crossed into Idaho at Bonners Ferry & got a Idaho map. It was only a 1-21- hr. drive across Idaho. We had lunch in Sandpoint where we seen our first expresso sign. Seems like if you get away from Seattle you sure don't see any expresso's.

We took Hwy # 2 & crossed into WA., N. of Spokane & headed towards Spokane, but turned off on a side road and headed for Deer Park where Loretta's mother had lived as a young girl for a few years. Bad side road, it became wash-board gravel fort-unately it wasn't very long and we came out on Hwy #395 & headed for Deer Lake to camp, but seen a sign on Loon Lake for tent camping. So we drove in and found a very good spot, but they had cabins on the beach so we took a cabin instead & folded up the tent (I said we aren't great campers, we needed Dennis & Jacque with us).

It was a great setting on our porch watching the ducks and an occasional boat. There was only one other family staying there so it was very quiet. Every where we stayed they were getting ready for winter, This resort will close at the end of Sept and the lake will freeze over. Great for ice skating I guess.

Friday AM our last day out we took Hwy #292 over to Springdale and then a side road to Hunter and up to Hwy #25 along Roosevelt Lake to Gilford and a little ferry that took us across to Inchelium on the Indian Reservation where we had breakfast and listened to more bear talk (big breakfast. We then took a side road across to Hwy 7#21 and down #21 to another side road t8 Nespelem where Chief Joseph in burned. Than up to Hwy #155 to Omac where it was 80 . Than it was on to Winthrop where we started seeing 40's & 50's cars, 59 ford Retractable Convertable etc. We rolled on through and up the pass where we met vintage cars, one after the other. The Winthrop Vintage Car Show must be SaE. The only non american oar was a Healey.

About this time something rattled under our car, it was the spacers from the front bumper and one corner of the bumper was bouncing on the road. The bolt stayed on the bumper and I just reunited it with the car. (All those side roads I guess).

Well we made it back to Mount Vernon for our traditional nachos then on to home where our dog & cat were very happy to see us.

Need to win the lotto, we could spend months on the road in the Morgan.

Bob & Loretta Nelson

MOG'S DOWN UNDER

With my wife "on sabbatical" researching the National Health System of New Zealand and Australia, I tagged along to carry her many research papers and books. Naturally she had many other volunteers but a strong back and weakish mind made me the most eligable.

First stop is Auckland New Zealand and within hours, I was in contact, via the Automobile Association, with the Morgan Sports Car Club. First Tuesday of each month is their gathering date and the venue is the Northcote Tavern, over the North Bridge from Auckland. Naturally I was there hours early waiting for my first glimpse of a Kiwi driven Morgan. Wetting the whistle with a half pint of Fosters, I missed their arrival via the rear parking lot. The barmaid need not announce their arrival for in they trooped, wearing the broadest of smiles and the fuzziest of beards. After introductions, chins wagged about our favorite marque and the highlight tale was a new found "trike" spending many years in a North Island wool shed. From the photos it looked as if it had lived in the Tasman Sea. Having my own very personal relationship with Morgans and rust, I tried to console the chap that with enough sand and pressure, all would be right. Etched on that Kiwi face was that all too familiar look "the bloody yank is having me on". But all agreeded, he was a fortunate man and should join the three wheeler club of Great Britian.

Time flew and at 10 P.M. sharp - the loadest of bells sounded the closing of another pub evening. We adjourned to the rear parking lot and there was a sight I will hardly forget. Four or five four-wheelers and up front in the dim night lights, two shiny "trikes". The pre-war "sport aero" stole the show for in the light, the massive polished aluminum engine just glistened. The owners, a husband and wife team adorned their "down under" snow suits and climbed aboard. Flicking the necessary switches, moving levers on wheel the starter whirled and the engine lit with the most wonderful sound I've heard in years. (I am sure the mood would have been the same without beermakers Foster). The two chrome stacks that ran alongside the body were hardly muffled - no motorcycle ever sounded so sweet. Another switch lit the two headlamps and they were away, into the damp evening air. Minutes later they could be heard, that lovely bark, heading south over the Auckland Bridge.

Before the final good-byes, I was presented with a list of Morgan owners, not only on the mainland, but South Island as well. The total is about 120 cars, approximately 13 trikes, 20 or so plus 4's, many 44s, and about 15-16 plus 8's. Only one drophead and it's a flat rad at that. You would think with New Zealand being a commonwealth, importation of Morgans would be a cinch but with strict laws governing monies leaving the country, importation used to be difficult. In the old days, dealers could only sell Mogs to poor students, ones without additional cash to buy M.G.'s and other makes. Now with inflation, currancy exchanges, devaluations, shipping and duty, one has to be a member of the thick wallet brigade to own our favorites.

After a week or so of touring this lovely island or botanical garden, we chanced on a visit with Lloyd Gleeson of New Plymouth. Lloyd is very active with the Morgan club and his fame is designer of the club badge. It's a pretty job, about 4" in diameter, highly enamaled badge which he actively trades with other clubs around the world. I looked over his collection and upon examination, our famous" boat anchor" was missing. Or hidden? Lloyd owns a pretty B.R.G. '69 4-4 which he purchased in the Motherland, toured the Continent before shipping home to New Plymouth. Standing next to his 4-4 is a Ford - Lotus - twin cam engine he hopes to install. Should be a neat and rapid Mog when finished. The other half of Lloyd's collection is one of the most remarkable replicas

Page 10: November · Businesscard size: $.O0/issue or 3 for $12.50 Quarter page: $10.00/issue or 3 for $25.00 or 12 for $100.00 Half page: $20.00/issue or 3 for $50.00 or 12 for $200.00

I have ever seen. I had always known the Kiwis to be keen craftsmen, clever resourceful chaps but this was the ultimate! Before my eyes was a full scale, exact repo of a late 1940 ish Cisitalia sports - racer. (The kind of stuff that ran Mila - Miglia). Someone on the North Island spent 8 years of his happy retirement creating this gem from Italian blue prints. In fact it was 100% Italian: Fiat Topolino front suspension, Fiat solid rear axle, Fiat 1100 c.c. engine, 15" Borroni wire wheels, even replica Nardi steering wheel. Originally only 3 were made, subsequently wrecked or lost and now it's "clone" remains locked up in a dusty, drafty garage in New Plymouth. Where visable the welded - up space frame looked fantastic. The engine sports giant Webbers and when brought to life, momma - mia what a sound.

What else is hidden away in New Zealand sheds and barns? Lots I am told. I had a chance meeting with a youngish senior citizen in a book store in Rotorua who owns and actively races a Stangiinni by name, Italiano by origin. He mentioned vintage and historic racing is big down here. I asked him about spare parts and he mentioned they make everthing from scratch or from drawings, even whole carburators! It seems they have been doing it since pioneer days. Being 10,000 miles from the source, one becomes very resourceful.

Before leaving the North Island, a visit to the Southward Auto Museum is in order. The collection began in the early 50,s and boasts one of the finest collections of vintage cars in the Southern Hemisphere. Located just 40 miles north of Wellington, the modern museum is situated in native bush and golf green grass. Inside can be found two pre 1900 cars, also the 1914 Stutts Indy racer that made Stutts famous in a day. An example each of Britians finest, a Gull Wing Mercedes, several post war Maserati Grand Prix cars and many many more. If one looks closely, two Morgan trikes can be found, a 1914 and pre-war "aero". We loved the many other museums but this one was the true "gem".

Next week it's on to the South Island, and the big smoke "Christchurch", the largest city in the south boasts a company called Auto Restoration doing outstanding work for customers worldwide, an All Brit Car Show and the start of the Pirelli Classic Tour for vintage and antiques. This is a run through breathtaking scenery in and around the Southern Alps. There is also rumors of a Morgan owner who also owns a World War II Supermarine Spitfire in very flyable condition. Lots happening down south in the month of November so stay tuned. Over and out.

Jacque Morrison, Editor, MOGAZINE 19425 S.E. 322nd., KENT, Washington, 98042 - USA

Dear Jacque

our PRESS CLIPPINGS! of the Great Canadian Caper - just in case you need some filler in the next MOGAZINE....

For the Hat Creek one thanks to Ben Roy and Bill Stewart for sending the clipping along and for the

Whistler one thanks to Chris Einarson of the Whistler Question for publishing it and sending it along - plus thanks to member Ric MacDonald for submitting the photo ... we did well on that...

If there is room could you announce that we were able to cover more than adequately the HAT CREEK HOLD-UP - short fall for lunch costs. The $60.00 is paid and there is an overage of $20.00 Canadian that I will be putting in a money order in USA funds for the club treasury - again my thanks to all that helped. There is a story here but it is more a whine than fun - but those involved will know and I will be back to them with my thanks in due course.

Sorry to hear you will not be my Editor in 1993... .see you at the Xmas affair!

ED. NOTE: My thanks to all those who have taken the effort to find/make interesting articles for publishing in the Mogazine. Special thanks to Mike Powley and Bob Nelson for all their articles and "filler" and their understanding when we couldn't print it all. Also my thanks to Mike for his nice encouraging letters. See Calendar page and the bottom of Harry Miltner's write-up for the news clippings. Again, thanks everyone!
