TODAY WE HONOR . . . A BUILDING?

Saints feast days, days recognizing people

who lived lives of heroic virtue, make sense.

Anniversaries of our particular parish

communities - dedications, patronal feast days, etc. -

these also make sense in terms of sentimental attachment.

The feasts recognizing the dedication of the Major

Basilicas in Rome, though ... does that make sense for the

whole Catholic world? Have I not said time and again

that the Church is not a collection of buildings?

Hasn’t anybody noticed that St. John reports in the Book

of Revelation that there are no temples (that includes

parishes) in heaven (Revelation 21:22)?

The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the official Cathedral

Church of the pope, and the pope is the pastor of all

Catholics. Therefore, in a very real way, St. John Lateran

is the Cathedral of all Catholics. Thus, it is not on the

calendar as a parish building in competition with other

parish buildings. Rather, it is a sign of our universality,

our Catholicity.

It is one of the most ancient church buildings in

Christendom, and has seen the baptism of some of the

first Christians in Rome. Over the baptistery, there is a

beautiful inscription. I would encourage you to look up

the basilica on the internet, read a translation of the

inscription, and take the virtual tour available on the

Vatican website.

Veteran’s Day—In 1918, World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The entire world celebrated. An armistice (a truce) was signed declaring the "war to end all wars" was finally over. The next year, on November 11th, the US called the day "Armistice Day" in memory of all the men and women involved in WWI. On Armistice Day, surviving soldiers marched in parades through their home towns. Politicians and veteran officers gave speeches and had ceremonies in thanks for the peace that had been won.
