NOVEMBER 9, 2014 THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA

REFLECTION

Zeal for your house will

consume me. (John 2:17)

Imagine a church adorned

with marble columns,

bursting with colors, gold ceilings, marble floors,

walls covered with New Testament scenes, a mosaic

of Mary and the saints, and a seven-meter high

statue of Jesus Christ. This is the Lateran Basilica in

Rome.

This building isn’t just visually stunning; it has a

rich history as well. As the cathedral of the Diocese

of Rome, it is considered the Pope’s church in his

capacity as bishop of Rome. The emperor

Constantine donated the land for it to Pope

Melchiades around a.d. 311, and had a church built

there for him. Until the construction of St. Peter’s in

the sixteenth century, the popes lived in a residence

built on the site as well.

Over time, the Lateran Basilica has faced many

hardships. It has been sacked, damaged by more

than one fire, and nearly destroyed by an

earthquake. But even in these challenges, this

historic church, which is a symbol for bishops

everywhere, can teach us. Like the Lateran, the

universal Church is both stunningly beautiful and

has faced many challenges. It has been persecuted,

and some of its members and leaders have made

mistakes that have inflicted grievous wounds on it.

Many bishops have handled their responsibilities

well; some have not.

None of this should surprise us. The Church is

made up of imperfect people, and bishops are no

exception. Like us, they face temptation, and so

they need support. As our brothers in Christ, they

need our prayers, our encouragement, and the

witness of our lives.

Try something different today. Write a letter or e-

mail to your bishop! Tell him you’re praying for

him. Rather than asking something of him, just

encourage him, and lift him up to the Lord.

“Thank you, Father, for those you have called to

be bishops. Bless them and protect them.

Reach Christ! Greetings fellow

parishioners and friends!

We are writing to you on

behalf of our parish youth

group, Reach Christ. Over the past year, with your

prayers and support, Reach Christ has been able to

minister to many youth within our parish and to the

greater community. We are striving to draw our teens

into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through our

meetings, service projects, and social events. In an

attempt to continue this fruitful endeavor we are

planning a great event for July 2015!

From the 16th – 25th of July 2015, 30-35 teens and

parents from Reach Christ will be walking El Camino de

Santiago (the Way of St. James). It is a 490mi walking

pilgrimage across the north coast of Spain to Santiago de

Compostela.

We will be walking the last 80mi, from Sarria, Spain

to Santiago de Compostela and the Shrine of St. James

the Apostle. Tradition teaches us that this is the final

resting place of the relics of St. James the Apostle,

which are interred in the Cathedral Shrine. Countless

pilgrims have made this walk for almost 1000 years! So,

why will Reach Christ do it? We will make this

pilgrimage for a number of reasons. We will follow in

the footsteps of the many pilgrims who, through this

walk, strengthened their relationship with the Lord. We

will show our teens the great depth and universality of

our Catholic Faith. We will walk in prayer for all of you

and bring your intentions to the tomb of the Apostle

James.

In humble prayer and petition we ask for your prayers

and, if your means allow, your financial support. We are

asking for sponsors to help our teens meet the cost of

this endeavor. If you are interested, please pray over the

possibility of helping us at the level of Bronze Sponsor

- $100+ , Silver Sponsor - $250+ , or Gold Sponsor -

$500+ Most of all, however, we ask for your prayerful

support, without which this endeavor would be fruitless.

All teens from the parish are welcome to join us! For

further information or for questions about sponsoring a

teen, please contact Fr. Dan at the Rectory (845-473-

4222).

Please be assured of our continuing prayers for you,

your families, and the wonderful people here at St.

Martin’s.

St. Martin de Porres & St. James the Apostle, Pray for

Us!
