Greetings VASBO members! On behalf of the Executive Board, I’d like to welcome you to the VASBO 2019 Fall Conference and a new venue for our conference activities, Virginia Crossings Hotel & Conference Center. If you’re new to school business and operations, or if you are a seasoned professional, the conference schedule provides professional development for all attendees. Don’t forget about the pre-conference professional development opportunities and the Team Building/Networking activity Monday evening. Five Fabulous Functions with Google Sheets Speaker: Paula Aldous—Chesterfield County Do you love the collaboration aspects of Google but sometimes struggle with having Google sheets perform the same functions that you have mas-tered in Excel? If so, this workshop is for you! Come with your laptop and come prepared to work. This will be an interactive presentation where we will walk through importing data, writing queries, creating pivot tables, using functional formulas and generating simple macros (if time permits).

During the workshop our Advisors will lead the group through important updates and enhancements.

General Session : VRS Update Speakers: Patricia Bishop, Barry Faison and Andy Feagans—VRS VRS will provide an overview of the agency, including information on the Hybrid Retirement Plan and tools employers can use to encourage employees to increase their voluntary contributions. We’ll also look at teacher employer contribution rates. We’ll also focus on GASB standards and financial reporting, with a look at the guidelines and resources VRS provides on a special section of our employer website. Our third focus will be the definition of creditable compensation: what’s included, what’s excluded and what to do if you have questions. The presentation will conclude with a quick review of useful resources for employers and features for members, including VRS’ award-winning financial wellness initiative.

School Security Speaker: Donna Michaelis—Dept. of Criminal Justice Services This presentation will provide an overview of the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety (the Center). Mrs. Michaelis will provide a detailed summary of legislation and data collection that drive the Center’s mission to include school safety audits and threat assessment. A snapshot of trainings, conferences and resources will also be provided.

GFOA Membership Benefits Speaker: Terry Stone—Hanover County This session will introduce the GFOA and share the resources that are available to members. This introduction will include information on the new School Budget Award and the recently approved GFOA Code of Ethics.

The Online Management of Education Grant Awards (OMEGA) is an automated grant reimbursement and application system designed and administered by the Virginia Department of Education. It is used to process grant expenditure reimbursements, budget transfers and application requests. This presentation will guide the end users through the following processes: • OMEGA Introduction • Establishing OMEGA permissions and SSWS access • Application Processing • Budget (Object Code) Transfers • Reimbursement Requests

Human Resource Matters Speaker: Donna Eagle—Prince William County In this lively session you will learn all the requirements for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. You will learn all about employee classifications, overtime rules, special rules for public employers, travel pay, on call pay, when you can dock pay, and many other nuances of this important federal law.
