Dear Friends,

“O Come O Come Emmanuel!” It seems like just yesterday that we were planning for Christmas 2013. We come to Church this weekend, perhaps still recovering from over-indulging on Thursday, or tired from our “Black Friday” (or, God Forbid, “Black Thursday”) shopping excursions. And we are told in no uncertain terms that the time is right to focus our

attention on the Lord. Not turkey, not bargains, but Jesus.

In just over three weeks we will be celebrating Christmas – although our retailers are having us celebrate Christmas for sixty days prior! During these days of Advent, we really ought to be spending time, not shopping or partying too much, but really preparing to welcome Christ into our lives. Jesus truly wants to enter our homes and our hearts; it’s up to us to prepare a space for Him. Today’s Gospel stresses urgency.

Three times in the Gospel today Jesus tells his followers to “watch.” It’s hard to watch when we spend so much of our time running and rushing. It’s hard to listen to the voice of the Lord when we are filling our heads with the noise of the season. It’s hard to see the good things God is doing in our midst when we dash from here to there to everywhere.

Jesus says, “Watch!” We will do just that this Advent season at Saint John Berchmans. On Monday, December 1, the parish will gather for a Taizé prayer service. Taizé prayer, named after the international ecumenical community that started it in France, provides time for reflection, contemplation and multilingual song. I visited Taizé in the summer of 1995 and stayed with the community for a week. I was struck by the spirit of collaboration and service to one another and was moved by the prayer. We will bring that prayer to Logan Square on Monday. Some of the songs from Taizé are familiar and some will be new. We will listen to words of Sacred Scripture and we will spend significant periods of time in silence. There will be opportunities to light candles representing our prayers and intentions. On Monday night, I hope we will fill the church with songs, prayers, and reflections - that we really will be watching! Please join us.

Other opportunities to prepare for the coming of the Lord abound this Advent season. Starting December 3 we begin our nightly novena prayer to prepare for the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In song and prayer we will reflect on our Lady’s role in Salvation history and

watch as she points us to her son. December 8, a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States of America, we celebrate our nation’s patroness, The Immaculate Conception. We will have Mass at 7:00 and 8:30AM and at 7:00PM. The Immaculate Conception Feast allows us to see God’s plan and Mary’s role in Salvation History. Because God wanted to find a worthy mother for His son, God planned that Mary be conceived in the womb of Ann without original sin – immaculately. Mary remained sin free and completed God’s will by saying yes to being the mother of Jesus. The Immaculate Conception demonstrates God’s great love for the human race. Celebrating Mary honors our loving God and the great plans God has for us. Plan to attend one of the three Masses.

We will also come together as a faith community, in this season of preparation, to confess our sins and seek the mercy of God in our annual Advent Reconciliation service. There probably is no better way to prepare for the coming of Jesus than to admit our sins, express our sorrow for those sins and receive absolution. Jesus will find our hearts ready to welcome Him as we choose to meet him in a state of grace. Many of my friends have told me that the Sacrament of Reconciliation isn’t a priority for them. This Advent, make the Sacrament a priority. Join us on December 10th at 7:00PM.

To allow Emmanuel to come, we must make room for him in our hearts. This great season, coming at the darkest time of our calendar year provides for weeks to prepare for the coming of the light of the world. LISTEN“Are you listening to me?” How many times do parents ask their children this question? More than they can count. The question, even if asked out of frustration, is a way to help children learn not only to hear but to pay attention. Learning to listen and to pay attention is a lifelong task, especially for the deepest things of life that involve God’s call and promise. The prophets of Advent, the Church’s worship, and our sacramental celebrations alert us and teach us to listen and to really pay attention to God. The messages are of the utmost importance—God is close, we need to change, and hope is our inheritance. God is saying to us in so many ways, “Are you listening to me?” Well, are we?

CHURCH CLEANING FOR CHRISTMAS

Please join us on Saturday, December 6th as we join together in cleaning our spiritual home in preparation for Christmas. There is much to do and more hands makes the work easier. We begin at 10:30am and expect to finish about 12:30pm. We need you! Join us if only for an hour.

ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICE

Prepare for the coming of our Lord! Join us Wednesday, December 10th at 7:00pm for our bilingual Advent Reconciliation Service. Advent is a joyful season, but it is also a penitential season, the perfect time to examine our consciences and receive the Sacrament of Penance in preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

On your way out of Church today, please take an ornament from our Giving Tree each ornament contains information of one of our school or religious education students. Once you have purchased a gift or gifts for that student, please attach the ornament to the unwrapped gift(s) or label the packet with the information listed on the ornament in red font. Please return the unwrapped, labeled gift(s) to Church at whichever Mass you attend the weekend of December 13th and 14th, as the gifts will be presented during the offertory during Mass. RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS

Whether we realize it or not, we are all beneficiaries of the tremendous contributions made by women and men religious to the Church and to the world. This annual collection, taken on the weekend of December 13th and 14th, is an opportunity to honor and thank retired Catholic sisters, brothers and religious-order priests for their generous service to our Church and our world. Thank you for your support of this appeal.

ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING

Sign-up sheets are available in the vestibule for all those who are interested in lighting the advent wreath during our Mass celebrations. There will be one time slot available per Mass for each of the four Sundays of Advent. Families, friends or ministry groups are welcome to sign-up for a time slot.

All are invited to join the Archdiocesan Guadalupe Federation on Saturday, December 6th for a serenade in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All those interested in joining the procession to Our Lady of Grace (2446 N. Ridgeway) should meet in the plaza in front of SJB Church at 5:00pm. The welcome ceremony and the crowning of Mary will begin at 7:00pm. Bishop Alberto Rojas will be the principal celebrant at the 8:00pm Mass. A reception will follow. SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Monday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please join us as we celebrate with Masses at 7:00am, 8:30am and bilingually at 7:00pm. This major feast honors the Blessed Virgin, who was conceived without sin in preparation to bear God himself. The Immaculate Conception is a Holy Day of Obligation.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE MASS AT SJB

Friday, December 12th, is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Mañanitas will be prayed at 5:00am, followed by coffee and pastries in the church hall. Mass will celebrated at 7:00pm, with a celebration to follow. Additionally, the novena in preparation for this Feast will begin on Wednesday, December 3rd at and continue each evening. The atmosphere is one of calm prayerfulness. The lighting is subdued.

Queridos Amigos,

“¡Oh Ven, Oh Ven Emanuel!” Parece que fue ayer que estábamos planeando la Navidad de 2013. Venimos a la Iglesia este fin de semana, quizás todavía recuperándonos de las festividades del jueves, o cansados de nuestro excursiones de compras o “viernes negro” (o, “jueves negro”, ni Dios lo quiera). Y se nos dice en términos inequívocos que ha llegado el

momento de enfocarnos en el Señor. No en el pavo, no en las ofertas, sino en Jesús.

En poco más de tres semanas celebraremos la Navidad - aunque nuestros comerciantes nos están haciendo celebrar la Navidad desde hace sesenta días. Durante estos días de Adviento, realmente no deberíamos de pasar el tiempo haciendo compras, o asistiendo a varias fiestas, sino que en realidad preparándonos para recibir a Cristo en nuestras vidas. Jesús verdaderamente desea entrar en nuestros hogares y nuestros corazones; está en nosotros preparar un espacio para Él. El Evangelio de hoy recalca la urgencia.

Tres veces en el Evangelio de hoy Jesús dice a sus seguidores que “observen”. Es difícil observar cuando nos pasamos gran parte de nuestro tiempo apresurados y corriendo. Es difícil escuchar la voz del Señor cuando nos llenamos la cabeza con el ruido de la temporada. Es difícil ver las cosas buenas que Dios está haciendo en medio de nosotros andamos continuamente de un lado a otro.

Jesús dice: “¡Observen!” Haremos precisamente eso en esta temporada de Adviento en San Juan Berchmans. El lunes 1ro de diciembre la parroquia se reunirá para un servicio de oración de Taizé. La oración de Taizé, que tiene el nombre de la comunidad ecuménica internacional que comenzó en Francia, ofrece tiempo para la reflexión, contemplación y canto multilingüe. Visité Taizé en el verano de 1995 y me quedé con la comunidad durante una semana. Me impresionó el espíritu de colaboración y servicio a los demás y me conmovió la oración. Traeremos esa oración a Logan Square el lunes. Algunas de las canciones de Taizé son familiares y algunas serán nuevas. Escucharemos las palabras de la Sagrada Escritura y pasaremos largos períodos de tiempo en silencio. Habrá oportunidades de encender velas que representan nuestras oraciones e intenciones. El lunes por la noche, espero que llenemos la Iglesia con cantos, oraciones, reflexiones –¡realmente esto es lo que estaremos observando! Por favor, únase a nosotros.

Otras oportunidades para prepararse para la venida del Señor, abundan en esta temporada de Adviento. A partir del 3 de diciembre comenzamos nuestra oración nocturna de la novena preparándonos para la celebración de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. En el canto y la oración reflexionaremos sobre el papel de la Virgen en la historia de la salvación y ver como ella nos señala a su hijo. El 8 de diciembre es un día de precepto en los Estados Unidos de América, celebramos a la patrona de nuestra nación, la Inmaculada Concepción. Tendremos misas a las 7:00 y 8:30 de la mañana y a las 7:00 de la noche. La Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción nos permite que consideremos el plan de Dios y el papel de María en la Historia de la Salvación. Debido a que Dios quería encontrar una madre digna para su hijo, planeó que María fuera concebida en el vientre de Ana sin pecado original - inmaculadamente. María permaneció libre de pecado y completó la voluntad de Dios al decir que sí para ser la madre de Jesús. La Inmaculada Concepción demuestra el gran amor de Dios para la raza humana. Celebrando a María honra a nuestro amoroso Dios y los grandes planes que Dios tiene para nosotros. Planee asistir a una de estas tres misas.

También nos uniremos como una comunidad de fe, en este tiempo de preparación, para confesar nuestros pecados y buscar la misericordia de Dios en nuestro servicio anual de Reconciliación de Adviento. Probablemente no hay mejor manera de prepararse para la venida de Jesús que admitir nuestros pecados, expresar nuestro dolor por los pecados y recibir la absolución. Jesús encontrará nuestros corazones listos para darle la bienvenida cuando decidamos recibirlo en un estado de gracia. Muchos de mis amigos me han dicho que el Sacramento de Reconciliación no es una prioridad para ellos. Este Adviento, haga que el Sacramento sea una prioridad. Únase a nosotros el 10 de diciembre a las 7:00 PM.

Para permitir que Emanuel venga, debemos hacer espacio para él en nuestros corazones. Esta gran temporada, llegando en el momento más oscuro de nuestro calendario anual ofrece un poco menos de cuatro semanas para prepararse para la venida de la luz del mundo. En San Juan Berchmans, haremos esto con oraciones y peticiones, en sutiles y simples formas. Marque su calendario y únase a los compañeros feligreses mientras que OBSERVAMOS juntos!

ESCUCHAR“¿Me estás escuchando?” ¿Cuántas veces los padres de familia les hacen esta pregunta a sus hijos? Más de las que se pueden contar. La pregunta, incluso como expresión de frustración, es una manera de ayudar a que los niños aprendan no solo a escuchar sino también a prestar atención. Aprender a escuchar y a prestar atención es una tarea de toda la vida, especialmente para los asuntos más profundos que involucran el llamado y la promesa de Dios. Los profetas del Adviento, la obra de la Iglesia y nuestras celebraciones sacramentales nos alertan, nos enseñan a escuchar y a realmente prestar atención a Dios. Los mensajes son de la mayor importancia: Dios está cerca, necesitamos cambiar y la esperanza es nuestro legado. Dios nos dice de tantas maneras: “¿Me estás escuchando?”. Bueno, ¿lo estamos escuchando?

LIMPIEZA DE LA IGLESIA PARA LA NAVIDAD

Por favor únase a nosotros el sábado 6 de diciembre cuando nos reuniremos en la limpieza de nuestro hogar espiritual en preparación para la Navidad. Advent…a time of waiting. It’s often difficult to wait through the Advent season as we anticipate Christmas, especially for the little ones. Waiting requires patience and perseverance. Waiting forces us to slow down. Waiting asks us to live in the moment and appreciate what that moment brings.

It seems as if we have been waiting for a very long time for the some of the projects around our campus to be completed. We have to be patient and trust that we will find a way. We have to persevere with our Legacy Campaign to find the needed funds. We have been very fortunate to receive the loans and grants that help with several of the projects, but these loans must be repaid.

We are truly grateful for all the support we have received so far, but we need you! Please help by supporting our Legacy Campaign. Information can be found at the Campaign website at www.sjblegacy.org or by contacting Jennifer Cortez in the parish office.

Adviento…un tiempo de espera. A menudo es difícil esperar por la temporada de Adviento mientras que anticipamos la Navidad, especialmente para los más pequeños.
