AT THE BEGINNING OF ADVENT,

WATCH AND WAIT… be attentive to the ways in which God comes into your life. Be

willing to be surprised. If you are surprised that he may be

calling you to a vocation as a priest or religious, call

Fr. Anthony Smith, Director of Vocations at St. Thomas

Seminary, 860-242-5573, email [email protected] or visit the

web www.vocationshartford.org.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Today’s gospel tells us to “Be watchful.” This comes natural

to families. Parents are watchful of their children’s health,

grades and friends. Children are watchful of parental moods.

Today’s gospel encourages us to use this ability to see God

acting in innocence, tenderness, love and forgiveness of your

family. “Be watchful,” the Lord is already with you.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Reading: Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b, 64:2-7 In this straightforward psalm, the people acknowledge their

sinful ways, yet plead that their Creator might reveal himself

to them. They ask God to remember, not their sins, but that

“We are all the work of your hands.”

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Paul explains to the Corinthians that they are specially favored

by God who has sent his only Son to them. He reminds us all

that it was through God’s grace that we have been called to

kinship with Christ.

Gospel: Mark 13:33-37 Just as a servant watching over the master’s house does not

know when he will return, we do not know the hour of the

Second Coming. Mark reminds us of the warning from Jesus

to always be on guard, for we know not the day, nor the hour.

READINGS FOR THE WEEKND DECEMBER 7 First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11

Second Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-14

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8

COME ONE, COME ALL!!

TO OUR

ANNUAL ST. PETER CLAVER

CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7TH ~ 3:00 PM

SAVE THE DATE… AS we begin ADVENT In response to Pope Francis’ call to lead people to a deeper

love and understanding of Our Lord Jesus Christ,

Father Henry Frascadore and Still Small Voice have joined

together to create a moving hour of poetry and song. On

Tuesday evening December 2nd they have been invited to

share this program with us. It will be held in our Church

sanctuary from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Signed copies of Father

Frascadore's books will be available for purchase as well.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

ADVENT GIVING TREE Once again this year, the St. Peter Claver Advent Giving Tree will be located near the sacristy beginning November 22ndthrough December 7th. The colored gift tags hanging on the tree represent several

worthy organizations and include a variety of needed "gifts". Please choose and return your unwrapped gift, with its tag firmly attached, no later than December 7th at 12:00 noon. In addition to the tags, there are boxes located near the Giving Tree for organizations that have requested gift cards in lieu of gifts. Anyone who would like to help the Knights of Columbus with the gift distribution, please contact Regina Molloy at (860)-961-7804. Thank you to all in our parish family for your continued generous support of this long-standing tradition.

“KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS” CARD SALE…

Cards will be sold in the Parish Center after all Masses on the weekends of November 22/23 and November 29/30. The Knights of Columbus are providing this service to all those who wish to send out some of the most beautiful cards that depict what Christmas is all about.

CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKET

SIGN-UPS CONTINUE Once again our St. Peter Claver community will “adopt” families as

part of our Christmas Food Basket program. This year we have refined our focus and are working with the following organizations for referrals to families in Hartford, West Hartford and Bloomfield: Holy Trinity Parish in Hartford, St. Augustine Parish in Hartford, the Town of West Hartford, St. Francis Hospital, Connecticut Children’s Medical

Center and Hartford Hospital. There is always a great need every year and these organizations have assured us the need is even more so this year. We are looking for families willing to provide a food basket for a needy family. We expect we will need to match last year’s 140 baskets! Signup sheets are available on the entrance tables for those who would like to participate. If you prefer, you may also sign up to provide a monetary donation for gift certificates to Stop & Shop in order for recipient families to purchase turkeys. We plan to distribute materials to donor families electronically this year, so please print your email address clearly so we can correspond with you. Giving a basket may seem like a small act of kindness, but for some families, this might be the only gift they receive this Christmas. Basket Drop-Off Day will take place on Saturday, December 20th at the Parish Center. Basket Delivery Day is Sunday December 21st. Please contact John O’Gorman at 860.523-9085 or [email protected], or Nancy Byrne at 860.521-7317 or [email protected] more info., or to volunteer.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Be constantly on the watch! Stay awake! You do not know when the appointed time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he orders the man at the gate to watch with a sharp eye.’”A new season of grace begins, advent, when we remember the first coming of Christ, anticipate His future coming and discern His presence among us today. The image of the traveler found in the person of Jesus is so appropriate. We have been given our personal, as well as collective tasks. He has placed certain responsibilities in our hands. As disciples we are called to be faithful followers, stellar examples as parents, responsible members of His flock and enthusiastic in the practice of our faith. A person on watch is there to provide safety from danger, but also to seize opportunities to serve. How many needs can be answered, how many wounds can be healed, how many chances for growth in the life of the church are offered to us, but we fail to take advantage. The church needs ministers at worship, teachers as catechists and sponsors for RCIA candidates. The church needs models for our youth, and support for our aging and homebound. Who is ready to respond to these needs? Advent offers a new beginning. Are you ready? His coming today is what is all important.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus promised His disciples that He would return one day, but only God the Father knows when. Jesus teaches us to keep our eyes open and to be ready for His return! Some of the things that we can do to be ready for Jesus everyday are re-membering to pray, reading the Bible, staying faithful to God’s commands - and most of all, keeping holy the Lord’s Day. Receiving Jesus in the Eucharist is the best way to live in Communion with Him! As we begin the Advent Season, we are called to grow in faith and grace - as true followers of Jesus - always ready for when He comes again!

"O LORD, You are our Father; we are all the work of Your hands.” Isaiah 64:8

We wish to thank all of our Teens for making our first Town-Wide Youth Group Event such a success! Special Thanks to Anne Carroll for preparing the Family Feud Game along with Mrs. Boehm, Mrs. Carr and Ms. Whittel for their assistance.

On behalf of our Faith Formation & Youth Ministry, we send our Heartfelt Thanks to Mrs. Mary Caputo and the Knights of Columbus for their most generous do-nations towards the purchase of our new large screen TV for the Parish Hall. The use of the TV helps us to further the Good News of Jesus - and is a blessing to all of our ministries and committees. May God bless you in abundance for this wonderful gift to your parish!
