Lord’s Peace Saint Monica parish, December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and a Holy Day of Obliga-tion, begins the Jubilee Year of Mercy. This past month the bulletin has been highlighting the coming of this year and this week I share the two ways that we as a parish will principally honor this year. For the weekend of December 5-6 until Christmas, daily devotional books will be made available. This simple daily prayer and reflection book is a way for each of us to journey together during this special year of grace. I also ask, if it is not already your family’s practice, to say family prayers together each day. These two simple acts of devotion, daily personal prayer and daily family prayer, are a simple and substantial way for the faithful of Saint Monica parish to participate in, and to receive, the graces offered during this special year dedicated to God’s Mercy.

YEAR OF MERCY part 4

HOW DO WE PARTICIPATE AS SAINT MONICA PARISH?

As a parish family we would like to participate in the Year of Mercy through two simple daily practices; daily personal prayer, and daily family prayer. I thank the Friends For Jesus group for helping to facilitate this initiative, and for providing prayer and evangelization aids through-out the Year of Mercy.

Daily personal prayer is at the heart of our relationship with God and is the fuel of the Christian life. Beginning the weekend of December 5-6 the parish will be giving away the Magnificat Year of Mercy Companion. This daily devotional book will take the place of our parish Christmas give away. The hope is that individually or in small groups each of us will use this book throughout the Year of Mercy to direct us in a common personal prayer time with God.

Daily family prayer opens the home to God’s grace and invites us to place our family needs into the hands of our Father. The hope is that each family will pray together, when possible, before meals, and say one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be together before bed.

Religious Education/Become a Catholic (RCIA).

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Fellow Parishioners: On this First Sunday Of Advent, may we all try to focus on the season and it’s “awesome” meaning of the com-ing of Our Lord. Rehearsals for The Glory of Christmas continue and the first presentation is this Friday. We in-vite everyone to any or all of our presentations: Dec. 4 at 11 am; Dec. 10 at 7 pm and Dec. 14 at 7 pm. It is a moving presentation and very touching when you con-sider these are grade school students. All are welcome and there is, naturally, no charge. Hope to see many of you there. Also, you are invited to the reception, that will follow the December 14th presentation , in Founders Hall. Our Primary Department will present Once Upon a Starry Night in the gym on Friday, December 11 at 6:30 pm. Everyone is always welcome to the school for all of our events. The date for the Christmas music concerts have not been finalized yet. Watch future bulletins for this information. The Christmas concerts are always very im-pressive for only being in school less than four months. Studying for Academic Games, basketball practices, and Chess Club are just a few other things that are keeping the students quite busy as we finalize some Advent ac-tivities and outings. We simply ask to be remembered in your prayers and thank you in advance for your doing so. Please keep the Angel fund in mind when you receive your church envelopes. It is a wonderful way to support the school. All donations, no matter how large or small, are greatly appreciated. We extend a very special thank you to everyone who selflessly continue to support the school through the Angel Fund. Tomorrow, November 30th, is the Feast of St. Andrew. It is a long standing tradition that we share the following beautiful and powerful Advent Novena with our school families. It is prayed 15 times each day from November 30th until Christmas. I would like to also share it with you: “Hail and Blessed be the hour and the moment when the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary at midnight in Bethlehem in the piercing cold. In that hour, oh my Lord, hear my prayers and grant my desires through the merits of Jesus Christ and His most Blessed Mother, Amen.” As always, I thank you for your continued support of your parish school and God Bless, Mr. Brad Diamond, Principal

PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS

(This is different from the Angel Tree – both are very worth-while projects.) It is over 20 years that the parishioners

from the Darlington Campus of St. Monica Parish have been providing gifts for patients at Lakeview Personal Care Home

of South Beaver. This year that will include about 75 Christ-mas gifts. As you can imagine, the patients and staff look forward to this event each year. If you missed picking up a

name at Church, call Heather Mineard and she will see that you get one. The wrapped gifts need to be brought back

to St. Monica Church by the 12:30 p.m. Mass on Sun-day, December 6th. They can be left in the box marked

Presents for Patients. If you have questions or are inter-

ested in helping, please contact Heather Mineard at 724-847-4827 or ([email protected]). Christmas is a time to remember and share God's blessings with our neighbors - young and old. Presents for Patients is an opportunity for our parish to provide for a sometimes overlooked group in our community.

THE INNOCENTS PAINTING A Pro Life Artwork by Nikki Bruni is at our parish until De-

cember 2nd. The purpose of this artwork is two-fold: First, it is to memorialize each human life by giving them a name.

As it travels, people will have the opportunity to give a name

to a child that was aborted by writing in the book that ac-companies it. Secondly, this work is meant to help us to rec-

ognize the tragedy of abortion, to realize what it has cost us, and to serve as an opportunity to grieve and to repent.

CHRISTMAS SEALS Christmas Seals are attached to the bulletin this weekend

and can be used on all your holiday mail. For additional seals, contact any member of the Knights of Columbus.

Proceeds from your donations for the seals go to special

needs children. Thank you for your support.

Claus at Founders Hall on Saturday, December 5th from 9am-11am. Adults $5; Children (5-12) $3; 4 & un-

der free. Remember to bring your camera so you can get a

picture with Santa!! All are welcome.

in Founders Hall. Cost of the Christmas Buffet will be

$8.00 for members and $13.00 for non members. Please RSVP to B. J. DeVenney at 724-843-4795 by Friday, Decem-

ber 4. We will have a 50/50 and enjoy the sounds of the Ellwood City Choral Group. Come join us for some holiday

fun.

THE GIVING TREE

Once again we are asking parishioners to participate in the annual “Giving Tree” for those at McGuire Home. Please

take a tag off of tree and return your gift under the tree wrapped with the tag on the present by the weekend of

December 13th.

(i.e., religious education, visiting the homebound and impris-

oned, friendly evangelization, etc.) and to grow in devotion to Jesus through Mary. We are welcoming new Active (able

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE!

“Legos” building blocks are all the rage. They appeal to everybody-kids and adults-because at heart all of us are

builders. A key understanding of “On Mission to The Church Alive!” is our responsibility in building the kingdom

of God. That sounds like a scary proposition, mauch too

big for us. But it’s simple. St. Therese of Lisieux explained: “A word, a kindly smile, will often suffice to gladden a

wounded and sorrowful heart.” That’s how we can build up the kingdom of God, one small act of kindness at a time!

To read more, check this week’s Pittsburgh Catholic and visit www.OnMissionChurchAlive.org.
