6th Grade Retreat
Our sixth graders were on retreat last Tuesday at St. Thomas Church in Menasha. We had a wonderful day together on the theme of Building Community . Following are some of the comments from students: What I learned about community is we all need each other. I learned that everyone has to help with the community. We all need to work together. Speaking of community, the students carried over 60 bags of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene items for the food Pantry at St. Thomas Church, which serves many local families in need. Thank you all for your generosity.
ADVENT Giving
Our school Advent project, sponsored by our Builder’s Club, will be done in partnership with the High School Key Club. We are collecting items for the school of Valle Nuevo in the Dominican Republic. Please see the attached list for donation ideas. We are also encouraging all school families to celebrate Advent within your home parishes. Look around your church to see what wonderful things they are doing for Advent. Many churches, for example, will have a Giving Tree , a food collection or donation station for some organization like Christine Ann Center or the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. Please consider participating with your family in any of these worthwhile Advent projects, and give generously.
Forensics
Signups are due December 15. Keep scrolling for more information about forensics.
Honor Roll
Keep scrolling for the list students who made honor roll for the first quarter. Congratulations to all our students on a great start to the school year!
Trimester 1 completed
For 7th and 8th grade students, the Trimester 1 has completed for their Art, Computer, or Health classes. Please check PowerSchool for their final grades.
Liturgical Year and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
This past Sunday we celebrated the Feast of Christ the King which is the last Sunday of ordinary time. Next week is the first Sunday of Advent – the start of the church year. As a faith community, we will have an Advent wreath outside the chapel throughout this wonderful season of giving and caring. Religion classes will have weekly chapel visits to help focus on the meaning of the season. We will celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with the high school on December 8 and we will have Reconciliation on Friday December 15. Finally, your student will be invited to participate in our special service/faith program called the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Service Award. That opportunity goes from Advent through Easter. Your child should have information by Christmas vacation and all the forms with details are on our website under faith .

St. Nick Social
St. Gabriel Parish is still looking for some volunteers for their St. Nick Social on December 3rd between 10:45-12:15 OR 12-1:30. There is also a need for help in setting up on December 2. Students who are able to help can earn service hours for religion class as well as for the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award. Please call or text Michaela Kegley at 920-740-1453 or go to SignUpGenius.com using the email [email protected] to sign up. Emergency Alert System SMCS uses an emergency alert system called Remind to let families know about school closings and critically important events. To receive text alerts only, text the message @9fg97 to the number 81010. If that does not work, text it to 920-933-1015. Normal text message rates charged by your carrier will apply. To receive email or other types of notifications, you may create an account at http://remind.com. Be assured that this system will be used only for very important notifications. In the event SMCS closes due to an emergency, all after school activities will either be cancelled or postponed. If you received the TEST alert text on Friday, November 10th, you are all set within the
system and do not need to do anything further.
Piano news
Five SMCMS piano students, Nate Pable, Anna Auth, Elena Altfillisch, Lauren Altfillisch, Anna Vanden Acker,
recently joined three SMM piano students to entertain shoppers at Barnes and Noble Book Store, Appleton. The eight students were among more than one hundred area musicians playing in a casual public setting for Keys For A Cause
from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm Saturday, November 18, raising scholarship money for area music students. Keys For a Cause is sponsored by Fox Valley Music Teachers Association (FVMTA) for students who are in need of financial assistance in affording music lessons and materials. Over $1500 was raised through private donations, tips for players and a percentage of sales designated for the event. The eight Saint Mary Catholic Schools students are pupils of Barbara Froelich, NCTM.

Dear Parents and Students,
The forensics season at SMCMS is ready to begin. Forensics is public speaking and is open to all students in all grades.
Students are able to participate in one of seven different categories. Poetry reading, prose reading, storytelling, and solo
acting are individual categories. Play-acting and group interpretation are done in groups of 3–7 students. Infomercial
may be done as an individual or as a group of 2 people. Some, but not all, categories require memorization.
December: Students will choose pieces. Students may supply their own piece (it must be approved by Mrs. Bonertz)
or may choose from pieces available in Mrs. Bonertz’s room. Students may begin selection of pieces as soon as they have
filled out and returned the bottom of this form.
January & February: All pieces must be selected by January 19. Coaches will be assigned to students during January.
Once a coach is assigned, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the coach for a practice time. Students need
to practice independently plus meet with their coaches a minimum of three times.
March: Tournaments
Practice tournament – March 6 (3:30 – 5:00) – This is mandatory for all forensics students.
Combined Elementary/Middle School Tournament – March 13 (after school)
SMCHS – March 20 (after school)
We need to stay to the number of entries for each category. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Mrs. Bonertz
Please detach the following and return by December 15 if you are interested in being a part of the forensics team.
Registration for forensics will be accepted after that date only for any available slot in a particular category. The fee for
the forensics programs is $30.00 per student for the entire season regardless of the number of tournaments the student
attends. This fee covers entrance fees and bus fees to the meets. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
