Father’s Focus

Friends, this weekend we celebrate, as the very last Sunday of the liturgical year, the great solemnity of Christ the King. Think perhaps of the way that a king would come last in a solemn formal procession, so too this feast comes at the culminating moment of the Church year. As we gaze upon the face of our king at Mass, in the adoration chapel, or in our silent meditation, it is important for us to reflect on two questions: Who is this king of ours? And what does it mean to be a part of his kingdom? First, who is our king? Sacred Scripture hints at his identity. 2 Samuel 5 tells us that he is a faithful shepherd, a commander leading his people in spiritual warfare, and a humble king who unites all people under his holy name. St. Paul, in his Epistle to the Colossians, makes known the king’s divinity: He is the Creator who existed from all of eternity. And finally, St. Luke, in his passion narrative, not only explicitly states, “This is the King of the Jews,” but he manifests to us the reality that our king rules and governs with endless mercy and perfect love. Who, then, is our King? HE IS GOD! Our King is Jesus Christ, the God-Man, the One who came to save us from our sins and open the gates of the heavenly paradise for us. And what does it mean to be a part of his kingdom? The beauty of this great solemnity is that we are reminded of not only our Divine King’s identity but ours as well. By our Baptism, we have been made into a new creation, and we have been given a new identity. St. Paul explains this reality to us when he so profoundly states: “Let us give thanks to the Father, who has made YOU fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” What is St. Paul saying here? He is marveling in the fact that God, through the cleansing power of Baptism, has made each one of us worthy to count heaven as our own inheritance… an inheritance that we will share for all eternity with our God and King. The point is this: our citizenship and our true home lies not in Wichita, KS, nor is it found in Lincoln, NE (although Nebraska is a close second!). No, our home is in heaven! At the moment of our baptism, we became heavenly citizens. We now count heaven as our own. The reality, then, is this: heaven is our true home and Christ is our true King!

Please know of my prayers!

~Fr. Labenz

PRESENTATION ON MARY Winston Kenton, a parishioner and catechist at St. Francis of Assisi, who is also a religion teacher in the diocese, will be doing a presentation on Mary called, “There Really IS Something About Mary!” from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 in St. Clare Hall. Here is what will be discussed: “For many Catholics our love and devotion to Mary, the Blessed Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ, comes naturally. However, there are certain infallible truths regarding the Blessed Mother that some Catholics might like to have a better understanding of which might not be easy to discern on their own. In this brief but exhaustive presentation on Mariology, here is an opportunity to have a better grasp of the four Marian Dogmas and the Scriptural and Magisterial basis for them. This is also an opportunity to come to a better understanding of some of the common misconceptions about Mary and how to respond charitably and properly to them should they arise in conversation with others. Ultimately, this presentation should bring you closer to Jesus through a deeper and richer love for His Blessed Mother.”

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS Parish nurses will be in the Bride’s Room in the back of church after all the Masses next weekend December 2 & 3.
