Seeking the Heights of Prayer at Mass…

“Continuous quality improvement” is a slogan that the U.S. Postal Service started using back around 1990, when I was a letter carrier. It’s a worthy goal for any organization, including the Church of Saint Raphael. There’s always room for improvement.

With that in mind, we will be using a new resource for the music at our Sunday Liturgies, beginning the First Sunday of Advent, Dec. 3, 2017. It’s called The Ignatius Pew Missal 2018. Why are we changing from the books we currently have in our pews? That’s a good question. Here are some of the reasons:

It costs less than the combination of books we currently use. The Order of the Mass is all together, in the front of the book. It contains all of the readings for Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. It has over 200 songs that fit in well with the nature of the Mass. The Eucharistic Liturgy is a Prayer. In fact, it’s the

highest form of prayer on earth. As such, it makes sense that the songs we sing at Mass be prayers. Whether they are prayers of intercession, praise or thanksgiving, they should be, for the most part, either directly addressed to God, or about Him. The songs in the Ignatius Pew Missal 2018 meet this criterion. There are also some songs in which we address the Blessed Virgin Mary and in which we encourage each other to prayer and faithful Christian living. While not as directly in the stream of Prayer that is the Mass, these kinds of songs are related to the spiritual dynamics of the Liturgy and so have their place as well. As a bonus, the songs are in alphabetical order.

We will still be using Today’s Missal in the Holy Spirit Chapel for daily Mass because it contains the readings for weekdays. During Advent and Lent, when we will move daily Mass into the main worship space, we will make copies of this available there on the tables on the east side, near the main confessionals.

Another resource will be a booklet we are putting together of some songs that are used by the young people in our Youth Group. You may hear some of this music at our Sunday Liturgies during Ordinary Time, at the discretion of our choir directors and accompanists, who choose the music for each of our Sunday Masses.

Another way to improve our Sunday Liturgies is something I learned from watching videos of Pope Francis celebrating Masses around the world. Those Liturgies are almost always concluded with a Marian hymn, in Latin, right after the final blessing. We do something similar now as we pray the “Hail Mary” together. Beginning in Advent, we will be following the Pope’s example more closely and sing to our Blessed Mother. (We will sing to her after the prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel.) From the evening of December 2, 2017 through February 11, 2018, we will sing the Salve Regina. (The “Hail, Holy Queen” prayer, with which many Catholics are familiar, is a paraphrase of it.) It’s number 237 in The Ignatius Pew Missal 2018. That contains an English paraphrase of the Latin, but for your benefit, below are two more literal and modern translations of it. The Latin is in bold print. Below that is a literal word-by-word translation so you can know what each of the Latin words mean, in regular print. Below that is a paraphrased English translation in normal American word order, in italics.

Salve Regina, mater misericordiae; Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra salve. Ad te clamamus, Hello Queen, mother of mercy, life, sweetness, and hope of us, hello. To you we cry out, Hello, Queen, mother of mercy; Hello, our, life, sweetness and hope. We cry out to you,

exsules, filii Evae. Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle. Eia ergo, exiles, sons of Eve. To you we sigh, groaning and weeping in this of tears valley. Quick, therefore, exiled sons of Eve. To you we sigh; mourning and weeping in this valley of years. So,

advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte. Et Iesum, benedictum fructum advocate ours, those your of mercy eyes to us turn. And Jesus, blessed fruit our Advocate, quickly turn your merciful eyes toward us. And after this our exile, show to us

ventris tui, nobis, post hoc exilium ostende. O Clemens, O pia,* O dulcis Virgo Maria. of womb your, to us, after this exile show. O clement, O pius, O sweet Virgin Mary. Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb. O gentle, O affectionate, O sweet Virgin Mary.

*The Latin word pia (pius in its masculine form) has many meanings, including: conscientious, faithful, respectful, righteous, affectionate, tender, devoted, loyal, pious, devout and godly. These all apply to the Blessed Virgin Mary!

Yours in Christ, Father Rudolph

Please attend the Parish Holy Hour, Sunday, December 3rd at 3:00 pm in the Holy Spirit Chapel. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, prayer, silent adoration, and Benediction. Experience the deep healing and peace that is found only in the presence of Jesus, the Lord.

First Saturday Devotions All are invited to attend the First Saturday Devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, after 8:00 am Mass, on the first Saturday of each month, in the Holy Spirit Chapel. The next first Saturday is December 2nd.

Our Lady of Fatima promised Sister Lucia that she would “assist at the hour of death, with graces necessary for salvation all those who on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months; confess , receive Holy Communion, pray a Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour meditating on the fifteen mysteries with the intention of offering me reparation”.

Saint of the Day – Saint Nikon Metanoiete Nikon was born in Pontus, in what is today the nation of Turkey. When he was still a young man he left home and went to a monastery known as Khrysopetro, where he spent twelve years living a life of prayer and penance. Then Nikon’s superiors, having noticed that the spiritual conferences he gave were so effective, decided to send him out of the monastery to preach. He went as a missionary to Crete, which the Christian Byzantine Empire had recovered from Muslim Arabs a few years before, in 960. There Nikon brought back to the Christian faith many people who had converted to Islam. After many years ministering in Crete, he went on to the Greek city of Sparta, where he built three churches and a monastery, and then on to other parts of Greece. Nikon came to be known as “Menanoiete” (Greek for “Repent!”) because that is the word with which he began all his homilies. His preaching was said to have been confirmed by miracles. Nikon died in a monastery on November 26, 998. Saint Nikon Metenoiete, pray for us! Day of Prayer for Persecuted Christians

The USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) has declared Nov. 26, 2017—the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe—to be a “Day of Prayer for Persecuted Christians” and Nov. 26 through Dec. 3, 2017 to be “A Week of Awareness.” As Archbishop Bernard Hebda recently wrote: “It is well documented that Chris-tians in Syria, in Iraq and around the Middle East continue to be targeted because of our faith. It is genocide of our vulnerable brothers and sisters, and we need to be aware, so we can act.” So, please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ—and all who are unjustly persecuted for practicing their faith—in a special way this week. If you would like to contribute for food, temporary shelter, schooling for children, rebuilding of homes and churches, and other practical needs for Christians suffering from persecution in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East, some recommended aid organizations are: Aid to the Church in Need, Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) and the Knights of Columbus. – Father Rudolph

Eucharistic Adoration – Be thankful contact Therese Juba at 763-553-8514 or

Betty Kreuter at 763-537-1399

Trust God with today, not just eternity. Visit him weekly, or as often as you are able throughout the Advent season which begins December 3. See what is possible for you in the new year!

If you feel called to make a commitment to a weekly hour or to sign up on the substitute list for the Christmas season or in the new year, please contact Betty or Therese at the numbers above. They are also able to answer any questions about Adoration. (If signing up for the Christmas Holy Days only, you need not call them.)

The Sunday hour from 4:00-5:00 a.m. still urgently needs to be filled by one or two adorers. The Wednesday hour from 4:00-5:00 a.m. needs a prayer partner. There are many hours that need prayer partners or long term subs over the winter months, for those who are traveling or unable to get around as well in the winter weather. Some of these hours are Mondays noon to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Fridays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and Sundays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

God’s blessings to all who continue to remain faithful to their committed hour of prayer and to their families.

Attention Seniors!

There will be NO 1st Friday coffee in December due to Christmas Village preparation!

Please pray for the following individuals:

Scott Dehn, John Noe, Andrew Eisenzimmer, Marlene Staloch, Elaine Wosmek, Michael Schultz, Marti Kujawa, and David McMillen.

Stop and Go Confessional Lights We now have new lights above the penitent’s doors of our confessionals, the side you go in to confess your sins. A green light means “Come on in.” A red light means “Please stay out, someone is already in here.” The lights are activated by the priest by way of a toggle switch, which he operates as he hears people come in and out of the confessional. The red light also comes on if someone kneels inside the confessional. If you don’t see any light on above the penitents’ door, either the priest forgot to activate the switch or he isn’t in there. When in doubt, you can knock on his door and see if he answers. The idea for the new lights comes from the confessionals in Saint Michael Catholic Church in Saint Michael, Minnesota.

The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree is a Christmas collection of gifts donated by parish members. Please remember those less fortunate by taking a star from one of the trees located in the East Gathering Space or the West Alcove. For more information contact Mary Lacina at 763-566-4346 or Kathy Williams at 763-544-0072.

Library Corner

WANTED A FEW MORE VOLUNTEERS!

If you like to read or love to wander the stacks of books in book shops and libraries, do I have a chance for you to indulge yourself.

We are looking for a few volunteers to help staff the St Raphael Church Library. It is a very simple commitment of half an hour before and after the weekend Masses. You will open the library before Mass to help any Parishioner that may stop by to return items or check out new items. You can then close to go to Mass and return after Mass. No computer skills are needed, the library program is very simple.

We are especially looking for someone to regularly staff the library before and after the 5:30 pm Mass on Saturday. So if you tend to always come to the 5:30 pm Saturday night Mass, this is an easy opportunity to share your time and talent without much additional effort.

We could also us additional volunteers to pick up shifts on Sundays. You choose the day and Mass you want to volunteer at by entering your name on our calendar in the Library.

If interested, please contact Janet Jones at 612-599-8056

Holiday shopping is indeed upon us and we would like to encourage all of St. Raphael’s community to think about supporting SCRIP during this blessed season. Please consider SCRIP as a way to purchase gifts for everyone on your Christmas shopping list. We have many Ready to Go SCRIP cards as well as the SCRIP cards you can order at hundreds of retailers and have them by the following week. It is as easy as that. Consider spreading out the financial necessities of Christmas shopping by purchasing SCRIP gift cards each week. Not only are gift cards the perfect gift, but you can also use them to pay for your purchases.
