Undoubtedly, there was a political dimension to the life and ministry of Jesus. The proximity of the Cleansing of the Temple to his subsequent arrest and crucifixion, the fact that crucifixion was a Roman form of punishment, added to the presence of Zealots (anti-Romans) among his entourage all point to the fact that his was not just a spiritual mission, but one that at least had political implications. As we get to know a little bit more about the life of the historical Jesus and are more sophisticated in our ability to discriminate between what is more likely to be a closer reflection of Jesus own behaviour and what is more likely to be influenced by later events, a picture emerges of a Jesus who, like the prophets before him, were dealing with a world in which religion and politics are far from being separate realities. One could hardly claim that people like Moses, Elijah and Jeremiah did not have an incredible influence on the political landscape of their day. But this has led to a number of varied and mutually incompatible portraits of Jesus being claimed by widely differing groups. He is pictured by some as a Marxist providing the blueprint for an economic and social reform; or as a black Messiah who stood up against an exploitive white nation in the Romans; or as a liberator who proclaimed that God’s kingdom belonged to the poor; or as the Prince of Peace who shows the way for nuclear disarmament. But the model of the prophets shows the inseparable interpenetration of religion, holiness and politics in Jesus, ministry in such aspects as the centrality of the Temple, the Sabbath and the coming threat or judgement on Israel. The question is was Jesus in favour of a certain political solution or did his quest for a reform of what was seen as holy, just and prestige have significant and deep political implications. PARISH WEEKDAY MASSES & RECONCILIATION

*HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: 9am Mondays & Fridays, *ST IGNATIUS Toowong: 5.30pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.

We respectfully acknowledge the

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

and caretakers of the land which is the

Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

present. May we, too, be good stewards of

this land.

Christ the King

Today’s Feast was instituted by Pope Pius XI in December 1925 in

his encyclical presented to the world at the close of the Jubilee Year.

They were turbulent times as far as national governance were concerned

with the rise of Communism towards the end of the Great War, Fascism

on the rise with the election of Mussolini in 1922 and Hitler already

making waves in Germany which would see the birth of Nazism in a few

years. Of course, in those days, there were still many kings in Europe and

other parts of the world but the Pope was not so much concerned to defend

that form of governance but rather to celebrate the all-embracing authority

of Christ, leading the human race to seek the peace of Christ in the

Kingdom of Christ.

Undoubtedly, there was a political dimension to the life and ministry of Jesus. The proximity of the

Cleansing of the Temple to his subsequent arrest and crucifixion, the fact that crucifixion was a Roman

form of punishment, added to the presence of Zealots (anti-Romans) among his entourage all point to the

fact that his was not just a spiritual mission, but one that at least had political implications.

As we get to know a little bit more about the life of the historical Jesus and are more sophisticated

in our ability to discriminate between what is more likely to be a closer reflection of Jesus own behaviour

and what is more likely to be influenced by later events, a picture emerges of a Jesus who, like the

prophets before him, were dealing with a world in which religion and politics are far from being separate

realities. One could hardly claim that people like Moses, Elijah and Jeremiah did not have an incredible

influence on the political landscape of their day.

But this has led to a number of varied and mutually incompatible portraits of Jesus being claimed by

widely differing groups. He is pictured by some as a Marxist providing the blueprint for an economic and

social reform; or as a black Messiah who stood up against an exploitive white nation in the Romans; or

as a liberator who proclaimed that God’s kingdom belonged to the poor; or as the Prince of Peace who

shows the way for nuclear disarmament.

But the model of the prophets shows the inseparable interpenetration of religion, holiness and politics

in Jesus, ministry in such aspects as the centrality of the Temple, the Sabbath and the coming threat or

judgement on Israel.

The question is was Jesus in favour of a certain political solution or did his quest for a reform of

what was seen as holy, just and prestige have significant and deep political implications.

Today we face the same questions as we strive to bring that Kingdom of peace, justice and

compassion to be in today’s world. May Christ reign in our hearts, our lives and

our countries!

UPDATE 2: AUCHENFLOWER CHURCH SITE DEVELOPMENT STAGE 1

The planned construction of a fence to block access to the front carpark and front entries of the church will be delayed

until mid-January 2019. The developers have advised they will need to design and obtain approval for changes to

the sewer lines before they can commence changes to Harriet St and the front carpark of the church. However, trees lining the front of the property and the dead fig tree

will be removed in the next couple of weeks,

The change in timing will not affect the overall time for construction and has the bonus of allowing the Advent and

Christmas season to proceed without disruption.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

Listen to what the Spirit is saying …

Does my voice, my experience,

sharing my story really matter?

Yes absolutely! Each of us is called as children of

God to respond to Pope Francis’ invitation to

become a “synodal” Church — a Church of faith-

filled people who speak boldly and with passion,

and who listen deeply with an open & humble heart.

In his address to the Bishops of the world, Pope

Francis explains the importance of listening,

dialogue and prayer: “A synodal Church is a Church

which listens, which realises that listening is more

than simply hearing. It is a mutual listening in which

everyone has something to learn. The faithful

people, the college of bishops, the Bishop of Rome:

all listening to each other, and all listening to the

Holy Spirit, the ‘Spirit of truth’ (Jn 14:17), in order to

know what he ‘says to the Churches’ (Rev 2:7).”
