Pilate’s role in this backwater province was to keep order, prevent uprisings, and ensure that taxes were paid to Rome. Today’s Gospel reading shows that Pilate couldn’t quite decide what to make of Jesus. He obviously wasn’t a mob leader, a zealot, or a con man. Jewish leaders had told Pilate of Jesus’ claim to be King of the Jews, which could be interpreted as a potential threat to Roman rule. Jesus said if he were claiming kingly rule in Judea his followers would be rising up in revolt. Jesus said to Pilate, “My kingdom does not belong to this world.” More importantly, he added, “I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice” (John 18:36, 37). Pilate was reluctant to condemn Jesus because he could find no fault in him, but his reluctance was finally overridden by fear of a riot or even rebellion by the Jews against Roman rule. Jesus “suffered under Pontius Pilate,” as we say in the Creed, because only Pilate could order crucifixion. The Gospels clearly show the political maneuvering between Roman rulers and Jewish religious leaders, neither of whom wanted any threat to their particular powers. Jesus was outside their usual frame of reference. He was a puzzle and a contradiction to them. He ruled by neither violence nor oppression; he simply witnessed to God’s truth. Anyone seeking this truth has only to listen and to respond to become part of the kingdom of God. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. A Eucharistic Community Living The Good News Daily

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Parish San Clemente, California

O n this solemnity of Christ the King we are reminded how Jesus spoke truth to power—the power of the mighty

Roman Empire in the person of Pontius Pilate, the prefect (governor) of the Roman province of Judea and the local representative of the Emperor Tiberius. November 25, 2012 Our Lord Jesus Christ the King 3

From our Pastor, Fr. Michael P. Hanifin

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima, This weekend is the Feast of Christ the King. This special day marks the conclusion of the Litur-gical year and the conclusion of the Cycle B readings. In 1925 Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King by proclaiming “Pax Christi in regno Christi” or the peace of Christ in the reign of Christ. This day was established and proclaimed by the Pope to reassert the sovereignty of Christ and the Church over all forms of government and to remind Christians of the fidelity and loyalty they owe to Christ who by his Incarnation and sacrificial death on the cross had made them adopted children of God and future citizens and heirs of the kingdom of heaven. We honor Christ the King of the Universe and the King of our hearts, allowing Jesus to rule over our lives. In thousands of hearts all over the world, Jesus still reigns as King.

I like to listen to talk radio and Dennis Prager is one of my favorites. A young woman called recently and stated that her generation was becoming increasingly secular. She stated that the Democrat Party relates better to an ever growing secu-lar population. She asked him if the Republican Party would ever adapt to better relate to a population that no longer relates to religion. Dennis Prager responded by saying that accommodating the growing secularism in our society is never good. Religion and faith have brought many important values to our country. In his latest book, Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph, Prager reflects on three val-ues our country is known for: E Pluribus Unum, Liberty, and In God We Trust. These values have formed our citizenry and allowed us to become the country that other nations look to for, and associate with, freedom and liberty. These val-ues came out of a Judeo-Christian heritage that must not be minimized or marginalized. Think of the many nations of the world who historically and presently live under the cloud of tyranny. These people desire to live in a land where their rights and dignity are respected. In his January 11, 1989 farewell address to the na-tion, President Ronald Regan said, “And how stands the city on this winter night? … After 200 years, two centuries, she still stands strong and true to the granite ridge and her glow has held no matter what storm. And she's still a beacon, still a magnet for all who must have freedom, for all the pilgrims from all the lost places who are hurtling through the dark-ness, toward home." Jesus Christ is the strong and the true granite ridge, the glowing light that yields to no storm, the beacon and the magnet for all who desire freedom, faith and hope. For a free people of faith, Jesus is the true King of the Universe who reigns in our hearts and rules over our lives. Gratefully yours in Christ the Good Steward, Father Michael P. Advent Wreath Gathering & Blessing Advent begins next week! With all the preparations for Thanksgiving Day, it’s easy for the season of Advent to sneak up on us. Yet this time of preparation is important. It’s a time for us to get ready to more fully celebrate God who came to us as one of us and who continues to be pre-sent to us. Here is one way you and your loved ones can prepare for the birth of our Lord – On Sunday, December 2, we will light the first of the four candles on our parish Advent wreath. At 10am, parish

families are invited to come to McGowan Hall to as-semble their own Advent wreath to take home and continue the celebration of the season. All materials, including candles, will be available. The gathering will conclude prior to the 11am Mass with a blessing of the wreaths. This gather-ing is for EVERYONE – families with children, cou-ples, singles, etc. Six chil-dren are needed to partici-pate in the blessing ritual. Please contact Denise Schnarr at [email protected] if you would like to volun-teer. Suggested wreath do-nation is $5.

Would you like to be an "RCIA SPONSOR?" What Does It Mean To Become an RCIA Sponsor? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process that allows interested individuals an opportunity to examine the Christian faith in a friendly, relaxed at-mosphere. The people on this wonderful faith journey need a partner, a fellow traveler, because sometimes the road is difficult, and it's not always easy to see where it's leading. They need a companion, a guide, a friend who knows the way! St. Augustine referred to the Church as a community of "Christians begetting Christians." In the early days, the Church was dependent on the witness of every member. Welcoming new Catholics was not only the responsibility of the clergy, but belonged with the entire community of the faithful. Thus, we have the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. This, in turn, gives each person in our parish the opportunity to share the gift of his/her faith with someone who is seeking to know God through our Church. This faith sharing is called the Ministry of Spon-sorship. The RCIA Sponsors play a vital role in helping show what it means to be a Catholic and a Christian; not by be-ing an authority on religion, but by sharing through their own experiences how God touches us in our daily lives. RCIA Sponsorship is also very rewarding. I have experi-enced the closeness and openness of this sharing process. Not only will the sponsor make many new friends, but will also gain a much deeper understanding of his/her own faith. The sponsor's responsibilities include: keeping in regular contact with the candidates, encouraging them, listening to their faith and their doubts, sharing time and experi-ence in a friendly manner, participating in the catechu-menate sessions when possible, praying with and for can-didates, and introducing the candidates to the other mem-bers of the community. The RCIA meets every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30PM. McGowan Hall room C. If you are interested in becoming an RCIA sponsor, please contact Rosa Rama at [email protected] or 492-4101, x119.

You are cordially invited to the OLF Ladies Christmas Joy Luncheon & Boutique Friday, November 30 Mass: 8:30am Boutique in McGowan Hall: 9:30am – 3:30pm / free admission. Lunch with guest speaker Miss Sue Simmons: 10:30am – 1:30pm / $25 per person, raffle tickets will be available! RSVP by November 26 to Mary Martin at (949) 246-2683 or [email protected]

Come Home for Christmas Project Season of Advent, 2012 Our Lady of Fatima Parish is developing a process to invite our parishioners to be the Lord’s instrument in bringing home for Christmas those family members and friends who have gone away from their Catholic faith. This will be a four-week Season of Advent project where we are asked to meet and talk with one person or family that were once Catholics but no longer practice their Catholic faith. No matter how long they have been away from the Catholic Church, they can always come home. They can start going to Mass again and Christmas Mass is a great celebration at which to begin the process of becoming a valued member of a parish community that is ready to welcome them with open arms. God is inviting them to dive into their faith in a deeper way than they may have ever had before. If you are interested in joining with Father Mike on this worthwhile project please contact him at the parish office at 492-4101.

Honramos a Cristo Rey
