As more people open their minds to the endless explanations of the un-known, religion is slowly losing its im-pact on American society, according to a recent study by the Pew Research Cen-ter. The Pew Research Center is an or-ganization that tracks issues and trends in America.

“More people are turning towards science rather than religion,” said Erik Jarosz, an 18-year-old computer science major at the County College of Mor-ris. Jarosz was born into a family that practices the Christian religion. As he grew older, he strayed from the beliefs. “It doesn’t answer all the questions,” he said.

He said he feels like he is “floating in between” science and religion. The way he was brought up gave him certain values and beliefs that will always im-pact his thoughts. Jaroz said he closely identifies with agnostic beliefs, which he shares with nearly 6 percent of the population. Those with agnostic beliefs generally “hold the view that any ulti-mate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable,” according to Merriam-Webster Dictonary.

“I learned the term this year but

I’ve felt that way for a while,” he said. Amanda Baryola, an 18-year-old

nursing major, was also a Catholic while growing up. She still identifies herself as Catholic and attended Catholic school as a child. However, this religious influ-ence doesn’t seem to coincide with her general views of religion.

“Religion is old and out of date,” she said. “Everything is set in stone and it doesn’t change with the times.”

Sheila Walsh, a religious educa-tion teacher for St. Thomas The Apostle Church, was raised in a Christian housh-old and said that it upsets her that people are beginning to wander from religion. “[My religion] helps me live the life I want to live,” she said. “It gives me guidelines and a structure to live by.”

According to the study, 1 in 5 Americans have no religious affiliation and approximately 88 percent of these

Americans aren’t even looking for a religion to follow. Sixty-six percent of the general American public said they believed that religion is losing its influ-ence on society.

“I think part of it is that we’ve grown into a culture where people don’t want to take responsibility for their ac-tions,” Walsh said. “People don’t want to live by rules. They don’t want to be told what they should and shouldn’t do.”

Though the study shows that the influence of religion is decreasing, 58 percent of the American public believe that religion is a very important aspect of their life.

“For some people, they live their lives and work well without [religion],” Walsh said. “For others, they need that community and that structure. Person-ally, I’m one of those people.”

Religion is becoming less of an everyday aspect for some.

Hurricane Sandy brought New Jersey’s vot-ing to a record low, according to reports. The storm hit land along the Jersey shore on Oct. 30. The forceful winds of up to 110 mph tore through people’s homes, destroyed their cars and left them in the dark. With Election Day only a few days later, the state did what they could to allow everyone to vote despite the damage from the storm.

Along the eastern seaboard, 8.5 million peo-ple lost power due to Sandy’s detrimental winds and rain. Many in New Jersey lost their power in the midst of the superstorm, including about 800 polling sites. A large portion of these polling sites were moved to different locations that had power, but New Jersey residents were still faced with troubles.

In order to compensate for this inconve-nience, Gov. Chris Christie announced at a press conference on Nov. 4 that the displaced citizens of New Jersey could vote electronically through email and fax. This decision made New Jersey the first state to allow electronic voting to a large portion of its population. Many of the county clerk’s offices also extended hours for voters.

Christie said this would help to alleviate the pressures of voting for the people of New Jersey during this troubling time.

These efforts failed when voters were met with busy signals on the phone, no confirmation emails and long lines at the polls.

“I don’t have that kind of time right now,” said Mario Cicero, a Hopatcong resident. “I’m worried about my house and having no power and water.” This would have been Cicero’s first time voting for the presidential election.

According to NJ.com, only 60 percent of the 5.5 million registered voters in New Jersey cast their ballot, beating the previous record low of 70 percent in the 2000 election. There are still absentee ballots to be accounted for, but they are not believed to increase the percentage of voters significantly.

“Voting is important,” said Matthew Plinio, a Hopatcong resident. “We all have the right to vote, but in the mess we’re in, I don’t blame those who didn’t.”

Transfer fair returns to CCM after Hurricane Sandy

County College of Morris’s “Transfer Fair” is rescheduled to Tuesday, Nov. 27 in the Davidson Rooms of the Student Commu-nity Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. due to Hurricane Sandy.

The purpose of the fair is to make gaining information about four-year schools easy and ac-cessible for two-year college students.

Over 40 different colleges and universities will have repre-sentatives on campus for students to interact with. “[It’s] a way to learn about more [schools] with-out going to other campus’s,” Coordinator of Transfer Services Kari Hawkins said.

The Office of Transfer Ser-vices hosts the Transfer Fair twice during the academic year, one each during the fall and spring semesters.

In the past the fair was lim-ited to just New Jersey higher education institutions but that’s something Hawkins has worked to change. The University of West

Virginia and Penn State Universi-ty are just two of the out-of-state universities that will be attending the fair.

Hawkins said that she would like for all the students at CCM to attend the fair but doesn’t expect that. “All students or most plan on transferring so I’d like to see more,” she said.

“[I’ve] never been to one,” broadcasting major Kayla Scrug-gs said. “[Transfer Fairs] are good for exposure of what schools you can go to.”

The Transfer Fair makes it convenient for students to get an idea of what schools offer be-cause they are all located in one place for easy access Hawkins said. She would like to see first year students attend the fair be-cause they have a lot of options in front of them.

Students might have an idea of what school they want to at-tend after CCM but attending the fair can open their eyes to other schools and what they of-fer Hawkins said. They might end up wanting to attend another school than what they originally

intended.Even with colleges sending

representatives some students still prefer to check out other in-stitutions online or take a campus tour Hawkins said.

There are many benefits of attending the fair though. Besides students being given information on the schools attending, upon walking into the fair students are given a form with questions that they should be asking the reps from the schools Hawkins said. The Office of Transfer Services does this in case some students aren’t sure what questions they should be asking.

Information about the “Com-prehensive State-Wide Transfer Agreement” will be distributed as well Hawkins said. The purpose of this agreement is to make a “seamless transition from public associate to public baccalaureate degree programs and support-ing the successful acquisition of baccalaureate degrees by transfer students,” according to the New Jersey’s website.

Another benefit of attending the transfer fair is because you get an opportunity to speak with a representative from a particular school face-to-face there are op-portunities to have admission fees waived Hawkins said.

Typically there are no instant admissions at the fair but that has happened on occasion Hawkins said.

The Transfer Fair isn’t for all students though.

“I’m not going to the Trans-fer Fair,” business administration major Kyle Feintuch said. “[I’m] trying to become a police officer after I leave CCM.”

“I can feel my heart slow-ing down… It’s about to burst. I got headaches, shakes, shivers like you wouldn’t believe!” The addict’s eye twitches. His hands pick and scratch at the bugs just beneath his skin.

Bless his convulsing heart. If there’s one type of person that doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit, it’s an addict. “We’ve been through this, can’t nothing be done. No money, no supply.”

“Money, man, money isn’t anything.” He rips off his shoes and slams them on the table. “Jor-dans, worth at least eighty.” The addict watches me and gnaws at his nails. Nice shoes. He flinches as I slide him a bag.

“Straight from Colombia.” He tears into the bag and in-

hales deeply. I see a tantalizing sliver of dopamine pass across his eyes. “French Vanilla? Stop play-ing me, word is you have that new Hazelnut strain.”

“These Jordans got blood all over them, you sure you bought these at Famous Footwear?” He doesn’t meet my eyes. “You get what you get. Now go. Go get your cream and sugar and get out of my face.”

I watch as he scurries off with the other rats. They knock over an I.V. stand, spilling its vital contents over the floor, but take no notice. The comatose pile of flesh and blood that it had been

hooked up to goes cold. My eyes water as my lunch attempts a cur-tain call, but there’s no use crying over spilt coffee. Nobody ever cries for an addict.

A monotone flat-line rings out. None of the other patients reacts except for the skeletal man in the bed adjacent to the corpse. Happy Customer #38 is his name, I think. #38 sits up and looks at me with an empty smile on his face. Then he throws himself to the floor and starts slurping up as much coffee as he can off the floor.

I’m too late. Potent as it is, medicine shouldn’t be mixed. #38 starts to shake and jig in my arms.

I’ve trained all my life for this moment. #38’s in trouble and I can help him. I spring into ac-tion and slap him good. The trans-action is enjoyable for both par-ties. So enjoyable that I slap him again. And again.

He’s stopped convulsing; years of training tell me he needs more coffee, so I brew a fresh pot special for him. He’s so indeci-sive he can’t tell me if he wants real sugar or the fake stuff. I slap him a few more times, but he’s playing hard-to-get.

Caffeine withdrawal is the devil, though, so I forgive him. I try again and again to serve him, but he just lets it dribble down his chest. I’ve worked with these types before so I expertly dump it over his face.

I make a second pot for him. His serenity shows through his

wide, blank eyes. I pour the pot on his chest, because what makes me happy is for my patients to be happy.

He’s silent now, and in a very deep sleep. #37 did that once. But he never came back and thanked me for helping him, and #38 and I have more chemistry than me and stupid, silent #37 ever did. Then I remember that nothing wakes you up like a cold shower and hot cof-fee and curse myself for being so forgetful. I bathe him in ice water to try to wake the life back into his pores, but his demeanor is still so cold.

Maybe #38 never did like me, maybe he never did like the jokes I told him, maybe he was never my friend. Maybe I can punch his face in until my shift is over, but he still won’t wake up.

I take money out of his wal-let for the coffee. Then I take some more for the trouble. Just like #38. Bloody, dirty money. A slow clap beats out behind me.

It’s my scaly-skinned man-ager. I’m nervous that he might think me a tad unprofessional, depending on how long he’s been watching me. But then again, they’re always watching.

I don’t think I have anything to worry about, though. He smiles as he speaks to me, but all I can hear are the hisses rolling off his forked tongue.

Everything worked out, though. I’m Dunkin Donuts’ new-est employee of the month.

Black Friday Survival Guide

Black Friday is always the Friday af-ter Thanksgiving. It can be described as an unofficial way to begin shopping for the holiday season.

Unfortunately, most retail stores will not disclose their big November sales. What can be revealed is that stores such as Target will be opening their doors on Thursday night… That’s right, on Thanks-giving Day.

Frequent shopper Erica Wright is in-furiated by the department stores’ decision to intrude on the Thanksgiving holiday.

“Can stores please stop trying to take over Thanksgiving, let people enjoy their holiday with their family. It’s called Black Friday, not Black Thursday,” said Wright.

People have taken to social networks like Facebook and Twitter about the con-troversy of opening stores a day early.

Reporter Rusty Surette tweeted he will not be going to the malls on the holi-day.

“Personally, I will not be shopping on Thanksgiving. I’d rather see retail work-ers spending time with their families,” said Surette.

Whether you decide to cash in on deals Thursday or Friday, there are a few tips to surviving retail’s most hectic day.

One of the most important is to plan ahead. Decide which products take prior-

ity. Make a list of department stores you want to visit first.

An easy way to guarantee the pur-chase of your favorite item is to buy it early.

Some stores will do a price adjust-ment on Black Friday. The sales associ-ates in stores complete price adjustments. To complete a price adjustment, the asso-ciate returns the item and rebuys it at the discounted price.

The last tip to surviving Black Friday has nothing to do with shopping itself. Finding a parking spot at the mall or the local Wal-Mart can be more frustrating than battling other bargain hunters.

When parking, look for a quick exit strategy. No one wants to be sitting in traf-fic battling other cars and pedestrians with shopping carts full of items.

This year’s discounts will be avail-able all weekend, and if claustrophobic stores aren’t your ideal situation there is always Cyber Monday.

The Monday after Thanksgiving has become increasingly popular over the past current years.

While some decide a day with fam-ily is more important than a 50 percent off discount, others feel getting ahead on holi-day shopping will make their lives easier in the end.

No matter what day you venture to the department stores, people are going to be cashing in on Black Friday.

This year, Black Friday falls on Nov. 23. This public tradition is always held the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Most stores come out with early bird specials to attract customers who want a head start to their holiday shopping. Some of the most popular stores, according to BlackFriday.com are Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Macy’s.

Last year, people camped outside some of these stores with hopes to get great bargains.

But there is another way to get ahead of the crowd, according to Shop.org. Approximately 61 percent of online retailers will start online marketing promotions by Halloween. This gives the shopper an opportunity and the convenience to search for bargains they need, avoiding the inconvenience of waiting in line in the cold in the early morning.

More than half (51.8 percent) of shoppers will shop online in the coming weeks with 89.7 percent of retailers planning to offer some form of free shipping for online shoppers.

While some shoppers enjoy the excitement of early morning lines and the mad rush on limited inventory, others prefer to avoid the chaos. For some who choose to be a savvy shopper, Black Friday will just be a relaxing day to sleep off the food after a big Thanksgiving dinner.

The lights dim and the thunderous echo of the drums engulf the crowd. The guitarist and bassist join in, and soon all eyes are focused on the stage. A familiar tune of Finger Eleven’s “Paralyzer” plays and everyone is singing along.

County College of Morris alumni Mi-chael Notar and Andy Fox make up half of New Jersey’s newest upcoming cover band, Backseat Love Affair. Drummer Anthony Anello along with singer Ray Van Rye has been making their mark on New Jersey’s nightlife.

“They have an awesome energy that makes you want to jam out with them every song. You’ll always have a great night,” said Michelle Centrella.

Notar has been playing bass guitar for 14 years. He graduated from CCM in 2006 and studied under CCM professor Joe Bi-lotti. Fox, also a music major, has been teaching guitar lessons for seven years at Music Shop in Boonton.

Notar met drummer Anello in the fifth grade, and they have been playing together for over five years. Anello has been play-ing drums since the age of 10 and is a jazz trained professional. Jose Pasillas III is Anello’s music role model.

Fox, an acquaintance from town, joined the band in January of 2011 along with Van Rye. Notar and Anello saw Van Rye’s flyer on a corkboard at the music stu-dio where they often practice.

“What separates Backseat Love Affair from any other cover band is the electri-fying energy they produce with each song they perform,” said Jamie Maguire, a fan of the band.

Classifying them as a rock cover band, expect to hear a variety of music from 80’s metal to today’s top 40 hits.

“We play the kind of music that makes you want to stay tuned because you never know what you’ll hear next,” said Notar. “We unleash rock versions of present day pop hits.”

Incubus, Nickelback, Foo Fighters and Metallica are listed as major musical influences on the type of music the band covers. A long-term goal is to eventually write their own music combining all of their different styles.

A Spectator should never assume to hear the exact set list twice. As a group they are constantly learning new songs and add two new songs a week to their exten-sive play list. Current new songs are “In Too Deep”, “500 Miles” and “Time after Time”.

The ultimate challenge Backseat Love

Affair is faced with is getting their music and name to the next level.

“Ultimately we want to make a living performing music,” said Fox, guitarist.

Fans can access the band’s Facebook page. They also have their own YouTube

channel that can access performances of songs like “I believe in a thing called love”, and “Don’t stop believing.”

“The Day we stop having fun and it becomes a job is the day we quit,” said Notar. Anello added, “We will never quit because it will always be fun”.

Backseat Love Affair taking Jersey for a wild ride

Rob Jennings seems like the typical guitar-playing college student, as the saying goes never judge a book by its cover.

Growing up Jennings’s older brother introduced him to a variety of music. Jennings’s mother, who is also a singer, taught him his first guitar chords. He credits his mother with all his musical talent. Beyond his family, Jen-nings has no professional training.

“As a kid, I was interested in how people made the music I was hearing,” said Jennings, “I’ve always liked being creative, and music happened to be the best outlet for that.”

He can remember teaching himself how to play the guitar as far back as the sixth grade. He can recall having trouble concentrating in school because he would create songs in his head.

At the start of his musical career, Jennings never thought about vocals. He wanted to be in the back playing guitar. Once joining his brother’s band, he was pushed into singing because his siblings refused to do vocals.

It was not until his last year of high school that he enjoyed singing. Although having a past in performing in bands, Jennings prefers a solo performance.

“I enjoy playing acoustic and singing by myself the most,” said Jennings. “I don’t have to rely on any other band members, so I feel most comfortable performing that way.”

If Jennings had to pick one influential role model it would be Jeff Buckley. Discovering Buckley in high school changed his entire approach to singing.

“I’ve always had kind of a high tenor voice that I was self-conscious about, so hearing his incredible range as a singer made me feel comfortable with my own voice,” said Jennings. “He taught me that you don’t always have to sound masculine when you sing, you can just sound how you sound, and it’s beautiful.”

Last year, he finished a full-length album entitled “Shy Nobody.” Hand Clap Movement, a music blog, re-viewed Jennings’s album and were pleased with what they heard.

“Multi-instrumentalist Rob Jennings recently re-leased his debut album Shy Nobody and I can’t get enough of his unique sound,” stated Hand Clap Movement. “As if

his musicianship wasn’t enough, Rob’s voice might be the highlight of the entire project.”

Jennings said he understands the difficulty in gain-ing a fan base other than friends and family, but is on the right track to having a successful music career. In 2010, he performed at Starland Ballroom twice. This year, he was a semi-finalist in a singer and songwriter competition in Montclair.

“Robbie is such a great performer,” said Caitlynn Chaplain, a CCM alumni, after seeing Jennings perform. “It’s a huge change of pace to hear someone perform with such a unique voice. I can only think to compare him to Freddy Mercury, a unique and exceptional voice that you can’t stop listening to.”

Studying at County College of Morris has helped Jen-nings, who is a music performance major. Professor, Joe Bilotti, once gave him advice that you can be the best with musical theory, and you may know all the technical as-pects, but at the end of the day it all comes from your gut.

“You can’t teach someone how to write a great song,” said Jennings regarding Professor Bilotti’s advice. Some of the best songwriters like the Beatles did not know much when it came to reading music, but they didn’t bother with it because when you analyze what you’re doing too much, it takes away from the magic of it.”

Once finishing CCM, Jennings said he hopes to play more venues and get more exposure. His long-term goal is for strangers to enjoy his music. In the meantime he is happy performing when he can and teaching children how to play guitar.

Eager ‘Final Mission’ fans get chance to meet authorDANA THOMPSONStaff writer

Have you ever wondered who the brain behind your fa-vorite book is? On Nov. 6, fans of “The Final Mission” had the chance to interact with Elizabeth Hoban and her father and co-au-thor at their book signing in The Campus Store.

Hoban, coordinator of Health Services at the County College of Morris, and her father, Lt. Col. Henry Supchak hosted a book signing for their co-authored piece, “The Final Mission.”

The pair wrote the book to tell the tale of Supchak’s en-deavors into an Austrian village in World War II and the ensuing chain of events. It was published in May by Westholme Publishing.

“The inspiration for writing the book, ‘The Final Mission’, was when we learned of the Aus-trian man who had been searching for my father who survived being shot down after 33 missions into Germany and then POW camp during WWII,” Hoban said. “The book was an opportunity to final-ly put some closure on his story after 68 years.”

The Austrian man had been part of the village that Supchak was trying to save when he was shot down. Decades later, the man was still dedicated to finding Supchak to thank him.

Hoban has written two oth-er fiction pieces, “The Cheech Room” and “A Fine Pickle.” Though she was a science and nursing major in both college and graduate school, Hoban reports that she has always had a love for

Gruber, an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran, described the book as “a remarkable story of sacri-fice, honor, and life-long redemp-tion that provides a rare glimpse into the true drama of the human

experience.”For Hoban, the book signing

was not only a time to showcase her passion for writing, but to pass on her own experiences as a writer. “The best advice I can of-fer anyone who would like to be an author is the work is truly like

the expression, 1 percent inspira-tion and 99 percent perspiration,” she said.

The event was open to both students and the public. “The book tells an amazing story,” said Austin Karcher, CCM alumnus. “When I found out about the book

signing, it made me proud to be a CCM alumnus when I heard that the author was part of the CCM community.”

The book signing had two sessions at The Campus Store in the Student Community Center, 12:30-1:30 p.m. and 4-5 p.m.

Maine, Maryland and Washington

approved same-sex marriage through a popular vote on the ballot on Election Day. Further, Minnesota did not approve an amendment that would deny same-sex couples the right to marry.

“If you love someone, you should be able to be happy together,” said Michelle Kuruc, an 18-year-old student at the Coun-ty College of Morris.

Kuruc said that there was a time when she did not support same-sex marriage. However, throughout high school, she saw people in these relationships and realized that they should be happy, too.

Another student, Natasha Go, 18, said “discriminating against this isn’t right.” She had trouble describing what she felt was “ignorant” discrimination.

She said she went to Catholic school as a child and “lived in a bubble” for a while, so she didn’t actually understand same-sex relationships. After a while, though, she came to understand and her thoughts evolved. She said she doesn’t understand why same-sex marriage is such an issue.

These students demonstrate the grow-ing support for same-sex marriage that was seen on the ballots on Election Day in Maine, Maryland, Washington state and Minnesota.

“The secret to our success is that we

won over hearts and minds,” said Fred Sainz, spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, to CNN. “Americans are fair and want to see their gay and lesbian friends, co-workers and family members have the freedom to marry.”

Maine, Maryland and Washington state were added to the growing list of states that have legalized same-sex mar-riage, which includes New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Con-necticut and Iowa. It is also legal in Wash-ington, D.C.

New Jersey has yet to become a part of this list. Instead, New Jersey takes more of a neutral position: it does not recognize or prohibit same-sex marriage.

New Jersey has had a civil unions bill since February 2007, which “offers same-sex couples state-level spousal rights and responsibilities, but none of the federal protections,” according to the website for the HRC, a civil rights organization work-ing toward equality for lesbian, gay, bisex-ual and transgender Americans.

In February 2012, a same-sex mar-riage bill passed through the New Jersey Legislature, but Gov. Chris Christie vetoed it, according to nj.com. If he had approved it, New Jersey could have been a part of the list.

“Support is growing and people are becoming more accepting,” Kuruc said. “It’ll just take time.”

Fun times for County College of Morris Biology Club

Primarily created to provide a support system for biology and chemistry students, the Biology Club desires to eliminate the per-ception that biology can not be fun.

According to professors Christine Kelly and Sheila Bar-bach, who also serve as co-advis-ers to the Biology Club, there is a real world application to biology and students should have a good time learning about it.

“Biology is not all about the textbook,” Kelly said. “Most im-portantly it is fun.”

The Biology Club focuses on having fun and to increase its presence by working with other student clubs.

“One thing we are going to do this semester is work with the Green Club, the Volunteer club and Phi Theta Kappa to put on events and be of service,” said Gina Moreno, the president of the Biology Club.

The club collaborated with Phi Theta Kappa in its first event,

“Food Fight: Competition in Food,” on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Barbach was featured as one of the event’s panelists. She is farm shareholder and was to give a presentation about the benefits of acquiring organic foods direct-ly from farms.

“I know exactly where my food comes from and it’s cheap-er,” Barbach said.

In the club’s attempt to get away from the textbook, it is planning a November trip to the Bodies Exhibit in New York City. The club will watch a live feed

of a surgery and attend a marine biology center at the New Jersey shore, Moreno said.

A major challenge the club faces is funding these endeavors, Moreno said. However, she is confident they can overcome this.

“College and being broke go hand in hand,” Moreno said. “Where there is a will there is a way…we have a great executive board, and I feel we will achieve our goals.”

As the all-encompassing study of life, biology can pres-ent many challenges in the class-

room. The Biology Club intends to overcome this obstacle.

The club is here to provide students with a support system that helps them build mutually beneficial relationships, Kelly said.

This sentiment is echoed by Barbach, as she urges students that can benefit from study groups to seek help because it is avail-able to them.

“There is a community at CCM,” Barbach said.

Women’s basketball team looks forward to a new season after ‘relentless recruitment’CAROL BERMUDEZ ENAMORADOEntertainment Editor

This year may be one of head coach Glenn Bowers’s most exciting seasons. Ap-proaching his seventh season, Bowers’s women’s basketball team opens up with the lady fall ball tournament as the returning champions.

“I am very optimistic,” said Bow-ers. “We have good players, great size and depth. More depth than any other year.”

Going in to the season, Bowers spent a lot of time recruiting players. He has one returning player and co-captain, Annie Es-

posito, a 6-foot center who averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds a game last season.

Bowers predicted that Espostito will

be one of the better players in the confer-ence this year.

Due to Bowers’s relentless recruit-ing in preparation for the season, his ros-ter consists of 13 players. This allows the tempo on the court to be played quickly and allows more opportunities for open shots.

Bowers said his coaching philosophy is positive reinforcement. He tries to build up, not tear down the players.

As a coach, the only thing he asks of the players is to “take the open shot.” With a season of 28 games, consisting of 15 home and 13 away, this season will be very exciting for Bowers and his team.

Men’s basketball team changes personnel, but holds on to competitive spirit and determinationANTHONY TOBARCommunications Manager

The County College of Morris men’s basketball team will rely on their athleticism to make up for their lack of size this season.

“This is the most athletic team since I have been here,” said Jamie Ciampaglio, CCM Titans head coach.

The Titans improved ath-leticism is due in part to the ad-dition of two key players. “Sean Bell and Marcus Carter are new players that could make an im-pact,” he said.

With changes in personnel, Ciampaglio recognizes that he has to play a brand of basketball that complements the Titans strengths in order to exploit op-posing defenses.

“We have to wear teams

out,” Ciampaglio said.One way the Titans plan on

wearing down opponents is by hounding them with full court pressure defense.

“Defense is one thing coach stresses a lot,” player Nana Ansah said. “You have to be able to guard.”

Playing stifling defense is typically a hallmark of many successful teams regardless of sport; however, it is hard to win unless you are able to generate more points than the opposition.

Ciampaglio anticipates us-ing defense not only as a way to prevent teams from scoring but also as a means to getting easy scoring opportunities.

“We want to create full-court action and score off our defense,” Ciampaglio said.

Despite how much Ciam-paglio preaches the importance

of defense, he knows there is no such thing as a perfect de-fense. There will be times when teams score and the Titans will be forced to score in half-court offense settings. According to Ciampaglio, these are the in-stances where he will have to find creative ways to score.

“We have to use our ath-leticism to attack the basket,” Ciampaglio said.

There are two basic ways to attack the basket. When an offensive player has a speed advantage, often times he will simply use the dribble to get into the land and finish with a lay-up or find the open man if the defense collapses. The other way is to use the ball screens which offer the options of tak-ing it all the way to the basket or passing the ball to the screener, preferably a bigger player, who

is rolling to the basket.We are still going to utilize

ball screens; however, the drib-ble drive will be more promi-nent, Ansah said.

There is no doubt that strategy plays a vital role in the team’s success, neverthe-less, it is the players who win the games not the coach, even if he is a mastermind. That is why Powell emphasizes the impor-tance of playing as a cohesive unit.

The Titans have been prac-ticing since Oct. 1 and so far Ansah likes what he sees.

“This year’s team features talented individuals and we have a lot of potential,” Ansah said. “I expect to win more games.”
