LAST SUNDAY OF THE CHURCH YEAR November 22 & 23, 2020 Welcome to Worship! On this, the Last Sunday of the Church Year, we remember there will come

a day when Christ returns in glory as King to judge the living and the dead. On that Day, He will take away all suffering and bring about a new creation. While we await His return, we are not disheartened by the darkness and death of our world. We care for the poor, visit the sick, and soothe the suffering, trusting that these small acts of service have eternal significance in the Kingdom of our Lord.

A Nursery is available below the entrance on Walnut St. and a Comfort Room is in the Atrium. The Nursery in not staffed at this time.

All Sunday School classes for toddlers – 6th grade are not meeting at this time.

Adult Bible Classes are in the Fellowship Hall, and Downstairs Social Room. The Adult

Information Class meets upstairs in 203. Everyone is welcome!

Cell Phones: Please remember to silence cell phones and electronics during worship.

Holy Communion will be offered at the 9:00 and 7:00 services. If you are not a confirmed member of the Lutheran Church, please contact an Elder or Pastor before Communing. An usher will dismiss your row to move forward to the person serving the bread, and then to the person serving the individual cup. You may then dispose of the cup and return by the center aisle.

Hearing devices are available from an usher.

THE PRELUDE: “Wake, Awake, For Night is Flying” – J.S. Bach

+++ 11:15 & 7:00 THE HYMN: “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” Hymn 709

1 The King of love my shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am His And He is mine forever.

2 Where streams of living water flow, My ransomed soul He leadeth

And, where the verdant pastures grow, With food celestial feedeth. 3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love He sought me

And on His shoulder gently laid And home rejoicing brought me. 4 In death’s dark vale I fear no ill With Thee, dear Lord, beside me,

Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy cross before to guide me. 5 Thou spreadst a table in my sight; Thine unction grace bestoweth;

And, oh, what transport of delight From Thy pure chalice floweth! 6 And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never;

Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise Within Thy house forever!

+++ 9:00 THE HYMN: “See This Wonder” Hymn 593

1 See this wonder in the making: God Himself this child is taking As a lamb safe in His keeping, His to be, awake or sleeping.

2 Miracle each time it happens As the door to heaven opens

And the Father beams, “Belovèd, Heir of gifts a king would covet!” 3 Far more tender than a mother, Far more caring than a father,

God, into Your arms we place her, With Your love and peace embrace her. 4 Here we bring a child of nature; Home we take a newborn creature,

Now God’s precious son or daughter, Born again by Word and water.

THE INVOCATION:

P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

THE EXHORTATION:

P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth.

P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

THE CONFESSION OF SINS

P O almighty God, merciful Father,

C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

THE ABSOLUTION P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the

Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

THE KYRIE

C Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

P Glory be to God on High, C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.

We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee. we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav'nly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY: (We pray together)

Eternal God, merciful Father, You have appointed Your Son as judge of the living and the dead. Enable us to wait for the day of His return with our eyes fixed on the kingdom prepared for Your own from the foundation of the world; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE WORD OF THE MONTH: (We speak together) And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40

THE OLD TESTAMENT READING: Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24

For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land. There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice. Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD to them: Behold, I, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Because you push with side and shoulder, and thrust at all the weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad, I will rescue my flock; they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep. And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD; I have spoken.

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!

THE EPISTLE READING: 1 Corinthians 15:20-28 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!

THE ALLELUIA AND VERSE: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

THE GOSPEL: Matthew 25:31-46 C: (Sing) Glory be to Thee, O Lord

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: (sing) Praise be to Thee, O Christ!

THE HYMN: “Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying” Hymn 516

1 “Wake, awake, for night is flying,” The watchmen on the heights are crying; “Awake, Jerusalem, arise!” Midnight hears the welcome voices And at the thrilling cry rejoices: “Oh, where are ye, ye virgins wise? The Bridegroom comes, awake! Your lamps with gladness take! Alleluia! With bridal care Yourselves prepare To meet the Bridegroom, who is near.”

2 Zion hears the watchmen singing, And all her heart with joy is springing; She wakes, she rises from her gloom. For her Lord comes down all-glorious, The strong in grace, in truth victorious; Her star is ris’n, her light is come. Now come, Thou Blessèd One, Lord Jesus, God’s own Son, Hail! Hosanna! We enter all The wedding hall To eat the Supper at Thy call.

3 Now let all the heav’ns adore Thee, Let saints and angels sing before Thee With harp and cymbals’ clearest tone. Of one pearl each shining portal, Where, joining with the choir immortal, We gather round Thy radiant throne. No eye has seen the light, No ear has heard the might Of Thy glory; Therefore will we Eternally Sing hymns of praise and joy to Thee!

THE SERMON: “Sheep, Goats, and Brothers”

+++ 7:00 - THE NICENE CREED, page 191 I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hymns: 621, 537, 525, 837, 735 621 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence 1 Let all mortal flesh keep silence And with fear and trembling stand;

Ponder nothing earthly-minded, For with blessing in His hand Christ our God to earth descending Comes our homage to demand.

2 King of kings yet born of Mary, As of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords in human vesture, In the body and the blood, He will give to all the faithful His own self for heav’nly food.

3 Rank on rank the host of heaven Spreads its vanguard on the way As the Light of Light, descending From the realms of endless day, Comes the pow’rs of hell to vanquish As the darkness clears away.

4 At His feet the six-winged seraph, Cherubim with sleepless eye,

Veil their faces to the presence As with ceaseless voice they cry: “Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, Lord Most High!”

537 Beautiful Savior 1 Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I’d love Thee, Truly I’d serve Thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

2 Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands, Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes our sorr’wing spirit sing.

3 Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight, Bright the sparkling stars on high; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels in the sky.

4 Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, Praise, adoration Now and forevermore be Thine!

525 Crown Him with Many Crowns 1 Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne;

Hark how the heav’nly anthem drowns All music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless king Through all eternity.

2 Crown Him the virgin’s Son, The God incarnate born, Whose arm those crimson trophies won Which now His brow adorn: Fruit of the mystic rose, Yet of that rose the stem, The root whence mercy ever flows, The babe of Bethlehem.

3 Crown Him the Lord of love. Behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified. No angels in the sky Can fully bear that sight, But downward bend their wond’ring eyes At mysteries so bright.

4 Crown Him the Lord of life, Who triumphed o’er the grave And rose victorious in the strife For those He came to save. His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring And lives that death may die.

5 Crown Him the Lord of heav’n, Enthroned in worlds above, Crown Him the king to whom is giv’n The wondrous name of Love. Crown Him with many crowns As thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, For He is king of all.

837 Lift High the Cross

Refrain: Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim Till all the world adore His sacred name.

1 Come, Christians, follow where our Captain trod, Our king victorious, Christ, the Son of God. Refrain

2 Led on their way by this triumphant sign, The hosts of God in conqu’ring ranks combine. Refrain

3 All newborn soldiers of the Crucified Bear on their brows the seal of Him who died. Refrain

4 O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree,

As Thou hast promised, draw us all to Thee. Refrain

5 Let ev’ry race and ev’ry language tell Of Him who saves our lives from death and hell. Refrain

6 So shall our song of triumph ever be: Praise to the Crucified for victory! Refrain

735 Have No Fear, Little Flock

1 Have no fear, little flock; Have no fear, little flock, For the Father has chosen To give you the Kingdom; Have no fear, little flock!

2 Have good cheer, little flock; Have good cheer, little flock, For the Father will keep you In His love forever; Have good cheer, little flock!

3 Praise the Lord high above; Praise the Lord high above, For He stoops down to heal you, Uplift and restore you; Praise the Lord high above!

4 Thankful hearts raise to God; Thankful hearts raise to God, For He stays close beside you, In all things works with you; Thankful hearts raise to God!

THE NUNC DIMITTIS C Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word,

for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE THANKSGIVING P O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, C: and His mercy endureth forever. THE SALUTATION P The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. THE BENEDICAMUS P Bless we the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE BENEDICTION P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to

you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C Amen.

THE CLOSING HYMN: “Lord, Dismiss Us with Your Blessing” Hymn 924

1 Lord, dismiss us with Your blessing, Fill our hearts with joy and peace; Let us each, Your love possessing, Triumph in redeeming grace. O refresh us; O refresh us, Trav’ling through this wilderness.

2 Thanks we give and adoration For Your Gospel’s joyful sound. May the fruits of Your salvation In our hearts and lives abound. Ever faithful, ever faithful To Your truth may we be found.

3 Savior, when Your love shall call us From our struggling pilgrim way, Let not fear of death appall us, Glad Your summons to obey. May we ever, may we ever Reign with You in endless day.
