VISUALIZING YOUR STORY Welcome to the Data Visualization Competition, taking place November 21st, 2019. This competition demonstrates the power of data interpretation and the community-wide benefits of open data. Our vision for this year’s event is to collaborate with Employment and Social Development Canada, and use the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a guide for our participants’ research. We have included several data sets for you to choose from (found at www.ibec.ca). These data sets are available to all participants however we look forward to your unique interpretation of this information. You are also welcome to use other open data sets that are publicly available (such as from Statistics Canada, municipal Open Data Portals, etc.) You must however use data that fits at least one of the 17 topics of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. COMPETITION OVERVIEWThe Data Visualization Competition will bring together teams ofparticipants from across Canada to demonstrate the power ofopen data. Teams will assess and analyze data and present an audiencewith a recommendation or story that show Canada’s level ofprogression in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.This allows for better decision-making and more variedsolutions to problems that span a wide range of social,environmental, and economic topics. Teams will be required to present their data they have analyzedto judges in a rapid “pitch” format, in addition to creating aninfographic poster for display during the event. It is an idealsetting for citizens to get engaged, to meet leaders inacademia, government, and private organizations, and toexplore the world of data science.

GUIDELINES

DATA PRESENTATIONS

Each team will be required to present their data’s story to apanel of judges through data visualizations (their infographic)and a PowerPoint presentation. Equipment necessary for thepresentation will be provided. The presentations are limited tofour minutes, which will be followed by a ten-minute questionand answer period. Presentation must be clear and organizedand allow the audience to easily follow the data story using datavisualizations. While presentations do not have to be in any particular order, itis important to highlight key findings in the data, and to offerpotential solutions. Organize your presentation to emphasizethe most important features of your interpretation in the time allotted. NOTE: Not all team members are required to present. Each teammay select one or more members to represent the team fortheir presentation, if they so choose

INFOGRAPHIC POSTERThe infographic posters will be displayed throughoutthe main floor in the Wu Conference Centre inFredericton, New Brunswick. A winner will beselected by our panel of judges and announced atthe competition. You will not be presenting yourinfographic posters or required to be present whilethey are on display. All infographic posters will beeligible for the final prize in that category. Infographic posters used are 20" x30"', therefore allfile images sent must be either PDF or JPEG,minimum DPI of 300.

ELIGIBILITY The Data Visualization Competition is open to allstudents or community members looking to raiseawareness though the 17 Sustainable DevelopmentGoals. Each applicant can register either individuallyor in teams consisting of several members. Eachteam may only submit one data presentation andone infographic. Teams are required to havepersonally created and delivered the datavisualization four-minute presentation and preparedthe infographic themselves.
