Dear Parents/Guardians:
October was another great month of learning at Mulvey, and we are all very excited to continue with our successes into the month of November. This past month saw our Marvelous Mulvey Students engaged in a wide variety of lessons in all curriculum areas as well in cohort sport, drama and art. Our Students, Staff and Parents also were very actively involved in the Terry Fox Foundation to raise funds and awareness for Cancer Research. Mulvey School was able to fundraise $500.00, a very sincere thank you to all! This year the student leadership team will focus on helping the Breakfast 2 Go Program both at the school and meeting virtually with other students from around the city to promote better nutrition.
October’s theme for the Pro-Social Programme was Bully-Proofing, Gratitude, Kindness, Staying Safe in the Community and celebrating our successes while being back to school. The Second Step and Kids in The Know lessons taught in the classrooms focused on this theme as well. In October, Constable Cross from the Winnipeg Police Service visited with students. Constable Cross also joined us for the Monday Morning Assemblies, talked on Personal Safety and Bully Proofing. Many kits and other appropriate resources will also be made available to students and teachers on this topic.
The Remembrance Day Assembly will take place on Thursday, November 10, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. Virtually. It will also be recorded so that it may be viewed at a later time. The link will be found in SeeSaw under announcements Parents/Guardians/Families are most welcome to view the service as it will feature student involvement.

October Acts of Recognition
Acts of Recognition (AoRs)
Acts of Recognition are given to students for achieving personal, academic, or social goals. We use the Seven Teachings to help students name their goals. This may be when a student goes beyond regular expectations or continually demonstrates skills and/or behaviours that contribute to making Mulvey School S.A.F.E. The following 72 students received Acts of Recognition stickers in the month of

Kindergarten - Mrs. H. Dumond
October was a busy month of learning in full day kindergarten! Students have adjusted well to rules and routines. We have begun our weekly letter practice,
where students are introduced to a new letter of the alphabet in mixed up order. They learn how to identify and name the letter, properly form the letter, and identify the sound that it makes. In October, students learned about the following letters: Bb, Mm, Tt, and Hh. Try asking them at home to show you how to print these letters, as well as identify the sound and words that start with each of these letters. We also studied pumpkins in October. Students learned that pumpkins grow on vines, and about the life cycle of pumpkins. Although Halloween looked a little bit different this year, we still made sure to make it a special day in our classroom with fun and safe learning activities
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM
Kindergarten - Ms. N. Schneider
As we welcome the Fall Season, we have been moving into the exciting unit entitled “Apples and Pumpkins”. Over the next several weeks, your child will continue to be involved in a variety of activities, including: creating apple patterns, graphing apples by colour and taste, ordering apples and pumpkins by size, making apple prints, sorting apples and pumpkins, using a variety of sorting rules, as well as reciting apple and pumpkin poems and songs. We will continue to practice thematic songs that will highlight the musical creativity and developing active listening skills and following the directions.
For our Literacy Programming, we developed the love of reading by choosing books based their interest, then, looking at the pictures, and sharing ideas about the story.
Thank you so much for your continued support. I am looking forward to another lively month on our learning journey!
Nursery - Ms. S. Gomes
Hello Nursery families, it has been such a wonderful month in Room 2! We are so busy learning classroom routines and transitions, the children are doing so well adjusting to their classroom environment. I am so proud of them. We have been so busy this month! For this past month we have been looking closely at the outside world around us and talking about Fall and all the changes that we see happening. We have gone on walks to collect leaves, read some stories about Fall, talked about the different types of leaves, and painted leaves. The interest and wonder that each child has is so special, I am so lucky to be a part of all the classroom
conversations that we have on a daily basis. We have also taken the time to investigate Sunflowers by touching them, smelling them, and looking closely at their details. The children were able to share their observations about Sunflowers with their peers during our classroom conversations. We then went on to draw and paint Sunflowers. Their paintings all look so beautiful, we have
some very talented artists in Room 2. We also made sure to take some time to talk about Thanksgiving and all that we are thankful for. The children drew and painted a picture of a turkey and created a Thanksgiving Day craft to take home and share with their families. We continue to work hard on building fine
motor muscles and skills each day. We are practicing holding and using scissors, printing our names, letters and numbers, and doing a variety of other fine motor building tasks. I continue to use Seesaw to post your children’s images, to communicate with families and to post some activities for your child to complete when they like. Thank you for taking an active role in your child’s learning.

October was a month of Thanksgiving and Halloween activities complete with treats and costumes! We drew diagrams of our costumes knowing that a diagram is a picture with labels and the labels are words and the words are made of letters! In October we completed our letter sound chart and have moved on to learning letter blends. We have begun the small group component of our Read to Me framework and although there are modifications due to the time needed for disinfecting between groups and other pandemic adjustments the groups are settling in well and literacy gains have already been made. Just for your information, in last month’s newsletter my report and the Room 5 spot were switched around and so there may have been an incongruence with what your child was reporting about the month and what the newsletter said.
In November we will be learning some poems for Remembrance Day and talking about conflict resolution.
Thank-you for allowing me this valuable time with your children!
Grades 1 & 2 Ms. E. Paragas
For ELA, we worked on developing our reading fluency and comprehension through daily practice of reading basic sight words, word families, sentences, and stories. In Math, we are working in groups to practice various skills like: counting objects, adding/subtracting numbers, making tens, and making patterns. We also practice various skills like counting collections, adding/subtracting numbers, making tens, making patterns, identifying numbers before and after the given number, rote counting forward/backward from 1 to 100, and skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s to 100. For Music activity, we listen to songs like: The Body Parts”, “Please and Thank You”, “Respect Song”, “Adding Doubles 1-10”, and “The Big Number Song”. In Science, we studied about body parts, five senses, living things and non-living things, and fall season. In Social Studies, we discussed ways of showing LOVE and RESPECT. We will practice writing PAX Tootle Notes. This notes entitles person recognition, praise, and honours for helping make our school a wonderful place every day. We also discussed about the Second Step Program and we will continue to use some strategies to develop concentration and active listening skill: eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, and body still.
Grades 2 & 3 Mr. J. Truss
In Language Arts we have just completed a novel study on the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We focussed on retelling the various chapters to ensure comprehension through daily writing activities, as well as looking deeper into the traits of the characters as they relate to the message of the story.
In our Math studies by developing a greater understanding of place value. We will also be doing daily Dreambox sessions that are at the appropriate level for the individual student. This program may be accessed from home, and I will provide an information sheet at the upcoming parent teacher conferences on how to do this.
In Social Studies we have been studying communities with the class developing a greater understanding of needs versus wants.
In Science we have been learning about how animals are classified by specific criteria. We have focussed on studying the five groups of vertebrates through video and note taking.
This month we will be continuing with the “Read To Me” literacy program in our classroom which provides daily small group instruction for all students. This year we will be incorporating an additional component aimed at improving student writing abilities.
I look forward to meeting with all families at the upcoming parent teacher conferences. If you are not able to attend at your scheduled time, please contact me through the school office to make alternative arrangements.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 2 & 3 Ms. K. Rosenberg
I hope everyone has been enjoying the beautiful fall weather, watching the colourful leaves fall from the trees. Seeing all the leaves outside made us think about descriptive words relating fall; we had a lot of fun writing and decorating creative acrostic poems all about fall!
In October, students finished designing their very own communities, and created convincing writing pieces about why their community would be a great place to visit! We also continued to study healthy living in Science, and were very interested in learning about a variety of animal classifications and characteristics.
Throughout November we will be continuing our study of animals and their life cycles. We will further develop our understanding of our Canadian community in Social Studies with a focus on needs versus wants of Canadian citizens. Students have shown a great love for learning math in our classroom! We have been learning a variety of ways to represent numbers and have been enjoying playing stand up/sit down games! We will be learning more about place value, patterning and will continue to develop our math strategies. In English Language Arts, we will be working on sentence structure and using voice to express our thoughts through writing and drawing. We will continue developing our editing skills, by reading and editing morning messages together as a class. On another note, our spelling program is up and running! As a reminder, students will bring home their spelling words on Mondays with Spelling Challenges on Fridays. Please continue to read for 15-20 minutes each evening. Thank you for your continued support. I am looking forward to another wonderful and exciting learning month with all of you!
Grades 3 & 4 Ms. W. MacKenzie
I hope you have all been getting out and enjoying the chilly, but lovely fall weather!
Throughout November we will be continuing our study of Canada. In science, we will carry on our inquiry of structures. In English Language Arts we will be working on How-To writing, letter-writing, and editing. In math, we will be continuing to learn more about representing number and place value.
Thank you for supporting your child’s learning by having them read for 15-20 minutes each evening. This is a fantastic way for students for maintain and build upon their current reading skills. For math homework, students can continue to work on Prodigy each evening for 15-20 minutes.
Please continue enjoy the little moments with your children and stay safe!
Grades 4 & 5 Mr. B. Papineau
Hello Room 19 families, October was a busy month, and your students have adapted well to our ‘new normal.’ In math, we worked on daily routines such as Number of the Day and Spirit of Math drills, and are working on multiplication and division in our more formal lessons. In our Words Their Way spelling program, we’ve made progress with spelling rules and all students are showing growth. Finally, in Social Studies I am really hoping that we’ve finished our projects on Manitoba (fingers are crossed as I write this). For those family members who’ve connected to us via Seesaw, I may have discussed our homework program. The math books that will be coming home during the week include a page or two for students to work on which is intended to reinforce skills taught in class and allow parents to see what their child is learning. As a busy parent myself I respect that families don’t often have a lot of time to devote to school-work in the evening, so I’m aiming to keep the work to a minimum while recognizing that it is beneficial for some skill reinforcement to occur after hours. Other than that, please ensure that your child is reading at home every single evening for at least twenty minutes. Reading at home is one of the most important things your child can do to help them develop academic and intellectual skills and a basis for success in their future.
Grades 3 & 4 Mrs. A. Luka
We are sure lucky to be experiencing a lovely fall season as October slowly fades away. The students have been working hard continuing to grow our classroom community! We have been studying structures and the materials used to build them. In math we are focusing on knowing our addition and subtraction facts as well as reinforcing different strategies such as front-end addition and using a number line. We are now able to represent numbers in many different ways such as base ten blocks, number sentences and expanded form. In social studies we have been focusing on learning what it means to be a citizen of a classroom as well as Canada. In English Language Arts we continue to learn about conventions and ideas in writing as well as the importance of expression and fluency in our reading. This month, we will continue to develop our math strategies as well as continuing to work on voice and organization in our writing.
Page 7
Grades 5 & 6 Mr. B. Kussin
This month is shaping up to be a tremendous one. The
students are beginning to apply the skills they already
possess and apply new ones they have learned so that
they may “Earn Their Learning” which is one of the core
goals of the class this year. Currently we are looking at the
early Canadian history and will be working our way up to
more recent times. In Language Arts our focus is on learning how to write proper paragraphs using the definition and elements of paragraph. In Science, we will
continue to look at the diversity of living organisms and
how the five-kingdom classification system is used to classify all living organisms based on each kingdom’s
characteristics. In Math, we are developing our problem
solving and flexible thinking skills, working on estimating
and increasing our understanding of multiplication.
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM
Grades 5 & 6 Ms. C. Fraser
During the month of October and continuing into November we are exploring our magnificent solar system. We are watching videos, researching, sketching, and having conversations about the immense beauty and magnitude of the stars, planets, comets, and power of these celestial objects. From the beauty of space to the beauty of our lovely country. We have been taking a look at our planet’s geographical features and boundaries. How the physical territories of Canada are so diverse and house many different habitats, foliage, and species. We are enjoying our exploration of Canada and learning about it on a deeper level. In English Language Arts, we have been learning about sentence structure and paragraph writing. We have been working to edit paragraphs that have mistakes in them and learn about grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Our spelling program has begun and you should see your child bring home spelling words every Monday to study for their test which occurs every Friday. These are just some of the things that we are doing in our class. We are looking forward to all the continued learning we will be doing in the month of November to expand our knowledge…until then, have a good learning day! Signing off…Room 16!!
Grade 1, 2, & 3 ASD Ms. L. Costello
Room 6 students have been very busy. Their routines have been established, and the students have been busy learning at their own pace. Room 6 is enjoying their weekly visits from Russel who does music therapy in small groups, teaching them different musical instruments and
sounds. They also have been busy learning about the changes that happen in the fall and have created beautiful artwork using leaves they have collected from outside. They have also enjoyed many community walks. They have seen the paintings of the North on Canora Street and walked to different parks in the community to enjoy the weather while they can.
Grades 4 & 5 Ms. C. Vande Graaf
We have had a very busy month here in our classroom. We have been continuing to learn about Canada and have started our research reports on the province or territory of our choice. We have realized that the coat of arms for all of the provinces and territories are pretty difficult to draw!!! In math we are continuing to learn about place value and are practicing adding and subtracting with large numbers. We have been learning how to do solve these questions both horizontally and vertically. In Science we are continuing our inquiry into space. We are working our way through the different objects in our solar system. We are going to be learning about the planets, asteroids, comets, the moon, dwarf planets, black holes and more. We have started off with the sun and created some beautiful pastels pictures. We have decided to do a piece of art work for every part of the solar system we study so we can create our own Milky Way solar system books.

October was a busy month! On the 8th we
were lucky to all enjoy an awesome
Thanksgiving lunch, thanks to Coach
Ashten! We had fun at Deer Meadow
Farms on the 9th going through the corn
maze answering questions on Manitoba,
hanging out with the animals and having
a wagon ride through the deer field. In
November, we’re going to be learning
about our veterans and what Remembrance Day means. We are continuing our unit on Manitoba and have
a giant map. Miss Brenna has been working on the elements of art and the
students really liked working with ink.
Everybody in the class has been working
hard on Daily 5 each day and our reading
and writing skills are improving so much.
We will be starting Second Step and learning about empathy and how to get along with oth-
ers. Report
cards will be
sent home on
the 17th and
parent teacher
conferences are
on the 20th.
Coach Program Mr. M. Jefkins
Where has the time gone? Things are really moving quickly and the students are adjusted to their regular school routines. Each day we are engaged in our daily reading, writing and math. In Social Studies we are currently studying all things to do with Manitoba. We’ve found some fun facts. Did you know that in Churchill they advise against kids dressing up as Polar Bears for Halloween? It’s because Polar Bears actually do roam through town from time-to-time and no one wants to be confused for a real Polar Bear! We have recently visited Deer Meadow Farms where we participated in a number of activities including a corn maze, a wagon ride to see some imported deer, and a petting zoo. We loved the animals most of all. They were so good to visit. Speaking of visiting animals, a selection of students are now going weekly to read to dogs at the Humane Society. Yes, you read that correctly. Students participating in See Spot Read have the opportunity to read to dogs. How cute is that?! Mrs. S has continued to fit in a Crafternoon when she can and the students have made some beautiful fall themed pieces we proudly display on our school walls. We’re still reading “Hatchet” and are excited to see what happens to Brian as he does his very best to apply himself to surviving in the Canadian wilderness. Next month we will have the answer but will not spoil it for you. Till then, stay warm and take care.
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM LAC Mr. D. Vicente
This month the focus will be completing our pro-social assembly presentation on River and Water safety. We will be learning about this topic and making a video to present to the school next month at the December 14
th assembly. We
also hope to enjoy
a delicious meal prepared by our student “chefs” at the end of the month as they learn how to measure ingredients, follow the Canadian food guide, and learn valuable lessons on eating and buying healthy foods, table manners and setting a table. Make sure to challenge your child this month to attain or even surpass their student specific reading goals. Reading for a minimum of twenty minutes each day will help our students become better readers and achieve there reading goals.

Welcome to Ms. Brenna’s
Artist Alley
Welcome back to Ms. Brenna’s Artists Alley! It feels like we are back into the full swing of things
here in the art room! Each classes “Line” based art is well underway and looking fantastic! The grade 1/2
classes are just finishing off their interesting line based watercolour paintings. They are most certainly turning out
vibrant and eye catching. Hopefully they will be on full display soon! Meanwhile the grade 2/3 classes have begun turning their line patterned paper into beautiful
quilting squares using some creativity and spatial problem solving. I can’t wait to see how the final
quilted collaboration turns out. They are off to a great start! The Picasso styled self-portraits the grade 3/4 have been working on are starting to come together!
With dark glue lines contrasting with bright watercolours, these really will be a stunning sight to behold once they are fully complete!
Highlighted in our Artists Alley this month are the grade 4/5’s. Heading in a different direction
from the colourful creations of the younger grades these students are focusing on
beautiful lines with stark black and white contrast as they take on one of the messiest mediums in
the art room, Ink! They have begun painting some lovely Kanji word art using sumi brushes to apply the ink in beautiful bold strokes. Their final project will place these gorgeous words onto translucent
paper so they will glow in the light. The grade 5/6’s have started to look at the world through the lens of light and shadow as they study contour lines. They have applied these lines to their own photographs,
highlighting and slightly distorting them in ways that bring out the natural contours of their
faces. They will be using these unique drawings as the first step in a series of
contour and continuous line self-portraits!
It has been a full and exciting month and I am so happy to see everyone jumping in with such enthusiasm as we take this basic art element
of Line and explore it in so many interesting and diverse ways!
Keep up the good work everyone!
