Fall Soil Prep

It’s important to clean-up the vegetable gardens this time of year.Removing debris is a necessary step in reducing insect anddisease problems that over winter and create problems thefollowing year. While cleaning out the area, consider mappingout where you planted stuff this year to help rotate vegetablecrops for the next year. After the area is cleaned out consideradding organic matter to the area with composts like CottonBurr Compost, Cattle Manure, Chicken Manure or

Natures Blend to begin prepping the soil for the spring season. Applyingorganic matter in the fall will allow it more time to break down and improve soilcomposition before spring planting. Till these products in to work up the soil.Think about having soil tests done on the area at this time of year to allow moretime for them to be done and analyzed. Adding products to the soil now will allowyou to start planting without delay next spring. Contact the Riley CountyExtension Service for Soil Testing or the K-State Soil Testing Lab. TTyler's Tipsyler's TipsHouseplants

As winter approaches and our outside landscapes go dormant, we begin to searchfor ways to brighten up our living spaces. Houseplants are a great solution to that. Not only are houseplants a great way to brighten up a room and add color to yourhome, they also work wonders for purifying the air. However, just like us, differenthouseplants have different needs in order to survive and thrive well.

ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

ZZ plants are great houseplants for beginners as theypractically thrive on neglect. Green and glossy, ovalshaped leaves, set on long stretching stems give thisplant a unique and modern look. While it prefersbright, indirect light, it will grow just fine with lowlight. Water it occasionally and you'll be sure to havesuccess. All parts of this plant are toxic however, sobe sure it's out of reach of children, pets and anyother curious creatures living in your house.

Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

Page 6: November 2020 - cdn.hibuwebsites.com

Chinese Evergreen is a sure way to add some fun andunique color to your home. Coming in many varieties, youcan find them in all sorts of colors, shapes and patterns. Some are more broad leafed while some are narrow. Somehave a fairly solid leaf pattern while some are morespeckled. Some have white, some have green and somehave a pinkish-red tint to them. Place your ChineseEvergreen in a low-bright (indirect) light area. Allow thepotting soil to dry out about an inch between watering.Make sure not to let it get so dry that it wilts.

Succulents

Succulents are probably one of the most popular types of plants out there rightnow. They come in such a wide variety of styles, textures and colors, it's easy toget obsessed and want to collect as many as you can find. Succulents love it hotand dry. They thrive in bright, sunny areas and hardly need any water at all.

Things to Keep in Mind

As the seasons change with yourhouseplants, there are specific careadaptations that need to be considered.

Make sure to keep an eye out forbugs during the winter months. With drier air, certain pests, suchas spider mites, are more prone toshow up. Try adding a humidifierto the room or misting the plantsdaily to help ward them off. Youcan also apply Bonide SystemicHouseplant Insect Controlgranules. This will last for 8weeks.Houseplants are also less activelygrowing during the wintermonths. This means they areusing less resources. Cut back onwatering your houseplants andmake sure you only water themjust enough to keep them fromdrying out. You should also avoidfertilizing houseplants during thewinter as they will not be puttingout much growth.
