MAYOR CONGRATULATES APEX

Mayor Clare McLaughlin has paid tribute to theWhyalla Apex Club, GFG Alliance and all thevolunteers that made this year's GFG AllianceWhyalla Christmas Pageant and After Pageant Fairsuch a success.

AFL TOURS BENNETT OVAL

AFL and Port Adelaide Football Club of�cialsbraved scorching conditions to inspect BennettOval as preparations continue for the pre-seasonmatch between the Power and Western Bulldogsnext year.

It was a thumb-ups on the progress as the visitingof�cials met with Council staff for a walk-aroundon the oval to inspect the work being done on thesurface and a tour of the construction site to seethe progress of grandstand area redevelopment.

STORY DOGS SAY THANKS TOCOUNCIL AND SCHOOL

City of Whyalla Councillor Irene Adair attended aspecial assembly at Memorial Oval Primary School(MOPS) to acknowledge the Story Dogs program

and a joint sponsorship from Council and theschool.

Following an application for funding from WhyallaStory Dogs, Council recently contributed $300 withMOPS tipping in $200 to sponsor the work GrahamMurray and his dog Abby have been doing at theprimary school for the past two years.

OLIVIA'S ART CONNECTS WITHUNEARTH

Whyalla’s uneARTh Festival has connected with itsimage for 2020 following November's PosterCompetition announcement.

The bright and colourful submission by Whyallaartist Olivia White was chosen by the competitionjudges as the artwork to promote uneARTh to theworld. It was unveiled at the festival InformationNight at the uneARTh HQ in City Plaza.

Stall holders and performers for next year’s eventrolled up to hear about the 2020 festival and seeOlivia’s winning entry which features a stylisticfeline character and �ying �sh connecting with theuneARTh branding.

STATE GOVERNMENT BUYS WHYALLASTEEL

Mayor Clare McLaughlin has congratulated theState Government and GFG Alliance after a majorannouncement on the weekend regarding steelsupply for Whyalla's new $100m high school.

Mayor McLaughlin was speaking on at thesteelworks after Minister for Energy and Mining,the Hon Dan van Holst Pellekaan, visited the city toannounce that 650 tonnes of structural steelworkfor the new school would be sourced from theWhyalla steelworks to further boost the localeconomy.

Up to $3.5 million will be injected into the localindustry for the supply and installation of 650tonnes of steel that will form the structure of thenew school.

Mayor Clare McLaughlin has proudly presented the�rst City of Whyalla Annual Report for the currentCouncil.

Mayor McLaughlin said the report underlinedCouncil’s vision to unearth a bright future forWhyalla. She thanked the previous elected bodyfor its work and con�rmed the current Council wascontinuing to deliver social and economictransformation and diversi�cation for the city.

CIVIC PARK WEEKEND TOILETCLOSURES

The City of Whyalla advises that the toilet block inCivic Park will be closed at all times on weekendsuntil further notice due to ongoing vandalism.

Council regrets this decision but feels it isnecessary at this time in light of the most recentsenseless vandalism  which resulted in extensivedamage to the facilities.

SIMEC Energy Australia invited Mayor ClareMcLaughlin to the Cultana Solar Farm site to see atest rig and introduce a range of stakeholders tothe project.

PHILL STONE OUR NEW DEPUTYMAYOR

Councillor Phill Stone is Whyalla’s new deputymayor following a vote at November's ordinaryCouncil meeting.

Mayor Clare McLaughlin congratulated Cr Stone onhis appointment and said he would bring a wealthof local government experience to the role.

Before becoming an elected member, Cr Stoneworked as a Council of�cer in tourism andcommunications for more than 35 years. In histourism role he was responsible for the WhyallaVisitor Information Centre before moving into the

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FORBEACH WHEELCHAIRS

The City of Whyalla is seeking volunteers for theAccessible Beach Program this summer.

Whyalla now has three beach wheelchairs and40m of beach matting to make it easier for thosein wheelchairs, walkers and prams to access thebeach at the foreshore. In conjunction with theWhyalla Beach Access Group (WBAG), Council hasnow cleared the way for the wheelchairs to beused.

Councillor Rick Santucci has been appointed as theCouncil representative for the Whyalla Chamber ofCommerce and Industry for the next twelvemonths.

Councillor Santucci’s appointment continues along-standing partnership between Council andChamber. The Chamber consists of 70 businessesand exists to service the needs of its membershipand serve the City of Whyalla.

MORE WHYALLA ARTUNEARTHED

Four more valuable and historical artworks havebeen unearthed and displayed at the WhyallaPublic Library.

The City of Whyalla’s art collection has been largelyhidden due to the lack of permanent exhibitionpremises. However, with the help of the library, awall has been established for three paintings to beexhibited on a rotational basis.

BENNETT OVAL SURFACESHAPING UP

The sprinklers are in and working at Bennett Ovalas Stage 1 of the $2.8m redevelopment of thesporting facility continues.

South Australian company Greene Eden WaterSystems has �nished installing approximately2500m of PVC piping below the turf surface with135 sprinkler heads spaced 15 metres apart tocreate an even watering coverage of the BennettOval surface.

COUNCIL APPOINTS ACTING CEO

The City of Whyalla has appointed Kristen Clark asacting chief executive of�cer.

A decision to appoint Mr Clark was made by theelected members at a special meeting inNovember. It follows the resignation of ChrisCowley who will be taking up the position of CEOwith the City of Burnside early next year.

Mr Clark is presently the Council’s DirectorInfrastructure. He will be acting CEO for a period ofup to six months.

SWIMMING AREA CLOSUREREMINDER

The City of Whyalla would like to remind residentsand visitors that the swimming enclosure in themarina is closed for the duration of the new jettyconstruction.

The swimming enclosure, and the regularbreakwater access to it, is included in thedesignated construction site of the new jetty whichis off limits to the public. Swimming in the marina,outside of the swimming enclosure, is forbidden atall times.
