6th Annual Holiday Gift Basket Drive
The holidays can be a lonely time for older adults
in our County and we need your help!
The office will be collecting the following, new, unopened items: baskets, blankets, winter hats, winter gloves, scarves, slippers, socks, books, puzzles,
crossword puzzle books, DVDs, CDs, bath gifts, household items, decorations, knitted items, cooking utensils, boxed chocolates, and other holiday-related
gift items. We will also accept monetary donations to buy items. Please make checks payable to: St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging.
Donated items can be dropped off at the OFA office in Canton or at any of the Nutrition Sites until Friday, November 22nd.
Winners will be drawn at random from our current home delivered meal
client list, and baskets will be delivered to the winners early December. Please help us to make the holidays a little brighter for the senior citizens in
St. Lawrence County! For more information, please call (315) 386-4730.
5 Ways to Express Appreciation on Veterans Day
Veterans Day is an important day for showing appreciation to members of our
military, past and present. If you're looking for an appropriate way to honor a veteran in your life, or would like to contribute in a way that's meaningful for veterans everywhere, here's a list of suggestions to start you off.
1. Show Up - Attend a Veterans Day event in your area -- not just a picnic with friends but an honest-to-goodness parade or service for veterans.
2. Fly a flag – correctly- Veterans Day is a great opportunity to fly the flag! Just make sure you're observing the proper rules for display.
3. Ask someone about their service - What did you do in the military? How long did you serve? What was your favorite moment in all your time in the
service? 4. Don't Confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day - Veterans Day is a time
to thank those who are serving or have served and are still with us.
Memorial Day is to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in service to their country.
5. Write - Small acts of recognizing someone's service, even anonymously, are appreciated.

Butternut Squash Queso Fundido
Recipe By: Katie Webster "This cheesy dip recipe is lightened up by subbing mashed butternut squash for some of the melted cheese. We also loaded it with chili-spiced caramelized onions. Serve this healthy makeover with tortilla chips or sliced jicama for dipping.”
Ingredients: 1 medium butternut squash (about 2¼ pounds, halved and seeded), ½ tsp salt, 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, 1 large sweet onion (sliced), 1 tbsp. chili powder, ¼ tsp chipotle chile powder or cayenne pepper, 8 ounces sharp
Cheddar cheese (shredded), 8 ounces Monterey Jack cheese (shredded), ⅔ cup pico de gallo or fresh salsa (drained), 2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro, 2 tbsp. toasted pepitas
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Place squash cut-side down on the prepared pan. Bake until tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. Turn over and let
cool slightly. Scoop the flesh into a food processor and add salt. Puree until smooth. Measure out 2 cups of
puree (reserve any remaining squash for another use). Set aside. 3. Meanwhile, combine oil and onion in a medium saucepan. Cover and cook over medium heat, stirring often,
for 10 minutes. Uncover and continue cooking until the onion is very soft and browned, 8 to 10 minutes more, reducing the heat and adding 1 tablespoon water at a time, as needed, if the onion begins browning
too quickly. Stir in chili powder and chipotle (or cayenne). Remove from heat, cover and let stand for 10 minutes.
4. When the squash is done, reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees. Coat a medium cast-iron skillet (10-inch) with cooking spray.
5. Toss Cheddar and Monterey Jack in a large bowl. Stir 1 cup of the cheeses into the reserved squash puree.
Spread about half of the remaining cheese in the prepared pan. Top with the squash. Spread half of the caramelized onions over the squash. Top with the remaining cheese and onions.
6. Bake until the cheese is melted and bubbling along the edges, about 20 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes. Top with pico de gallo (or salsa), cilantro and pepitas.
To make ahead: Refrigerate the dip (Steps 1-5) for up to 6 hours. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in Step 6.

10 Healthy Holiday Nutrition Tips
Holidays are usually enjoyable. However, unhealthy habits can be attached to the parties and gatherings. Here
are 10 tips from Allie Wergin, registered dietitian nutritionist at Mayo Clinic Health System, to help you have a healthier holiday:
1. Don’t skip meals. Skipping a meal with the goal of saving calories prior to a holiday event can often backfire
and lead to overeating due to ravenous feelings of hunger. Having a filling snack, such as fruit, string cheese, yogurt or a small handful of nuts, can help to curb your appetite and prevent overeating. 2. Contribute a healthy dish. Ensure at least one nutritious choice is available at potlucks by contributing a healthy dish. 3. Choose your splurges. Scan the buffet or dinner table and choose a couple holiday favorites to splurge on instead of foods that you can have any other day of the year. 4. Think Color. Make a plate look festive by including fruits and veggies. Aim to cover half the plate. 5. Choose drinks wisely. Stick to calorie-free drinks, such as water, tea or seltzer, instead of high-calorie festive drinks. Alcoholic beverages contribute empty calories and can cause you to make poor judgments with food. If
you do choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation, and alternate each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. 6. Visit the people, not the food. Move socializing away from the buffet or appetizer table to prevent mindless
eating. 7. Say no to food pushers (politely). 8. Savor seasonal treats. Having treats once a year will not make or break your weight. Make sure you take time to really taste and enjoy that special treat when you have it. 9. Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed. No one likes that icky, stuffed feeling after a meal. Eat slowly, and
check your fullness levels while you’re eating. Remember — there are always leftovers! 10. Don’t feel guilty. If you did overindulge, don’t beat yourself up. Just make sure your next meal is healthy, and
be sure to incorporate exercise into your routine.
