TREASURER REPORT by Neil Leary

The club has completed the first six months of our operating year

with excellent results. Our operating profit is $ 236m, and $ 97m

over plan. The first six months covers the golf season so our

revenues from both the Golf, and Food/Beverage business tends to

be quite strong. The clubhouse was reroofed, and the parking lot

extension was started, two major infrastructure projects.

Our membership levels continue to be strong (golf related 483;

non golf 183), and our members are actively using the clubs

facilities.

The board and management team looks forward to a busy holiday

season and strong 2nd half.

GOLF COMMITTEE REPORT by Kent Sanderson

Another outstanding year of golf at Cripple Creek is drawing to a close! For those remaining

here and golfing in Delaware over the next several months, the “Active” season for posting

handicaps as established by the Delaware State Golf Association ends on November 14. You

should continue posting your Delaware scores through that date. Those heading to warmer

climates such as Florida or Arizona are required to post scores year-round. A complete

state-by-state listing of Active handicap posting seasons may be found using the following

link:

https://www.usga.org/handicapping-articles/handicap-active-and-inactive-season-schedule-25489.html

We would like to assist Cripple Creek golfers who post scores on more than one handicap

system (such as DSGA, GHIN, and MSGA) by linking your handicaps across those systems.

Without establishing such a link, golfers posting in two different handicap systems would be

required to post all scores in both systems. Please let Kent Sanderson, Sue Bennett, Tappy

Phillips or Brian Trout know if you fit this description and have not already had your

handicaps linked. In the near future, the proposed World Handicap System (WHS) which

many of you have heard about may also address this point. We will keep you informed as we

learn more details on the implementation of the WHS.

CCWGA 18 HOLE by Cynthia Hunsberger

The 18 Hole Ladies golf season has ended. We will continue to make tee times for play on

Wednesday, Saturday and Monday. You must sign up for these tee times by calling the Pro Shop

and keep in mind that unused times will be released if not filled 72 hours in advance.

Since our events have ended, I would like to share something from a book I have been reading

that may help or give you some insight. This is from Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Dr. Bob

Rotella. He tells a story of when Ben Hogan was on the tee of a long par five and the green was

not visible. He asked his caddie for a target. The caddie told him to aim for the palm trees in

the distance. To which Hogan replied, “Which palm tree?”.

The story seems to be about Hogan’s perfectionism, but it is really about “Hogan’s knowledge

of one of the fundamental psychological principles in golf. Before taking any shot, a golfer

must pick out the smallest possible target. “This may seem obvious to some people. But I am

continually amazed at the number of golfers who don’t do it. When I am at a clinic our Pro Am

with someone who has just sprayed his ball into the next county. I sometimes ask what he was

aiming at when he hit the errant shot.”

“Usually the reply is something like, “I was aiming down the left side.” Or “down the middle.”

Or people might say, “I don’t know what I was aiming at. I just knew I didn’t want to miss left.”

“The brain and nervous system respond best when the eyes focus on the smallest possible target.

Why this is so is not important. It just happens to be the way the human system works.”

“It is true in virtually every sport. We teach basketball players to look, not at the backboard,

nor even the rim but at the net loop in back of the rim.”

“The smaller the target, the sharper the athlete’s focus, the better his concentration, and the

better the results. When an athlete locks his eyes and mind onto a small target, the ball

naturally tends to follow.”

Give this a try the next time you are on the range or on the course.
