CYCLE AWARENESS TRAINING FOR LEARNER DRIVERSCycling Scotland has developed a free 3.5 hour Cycle Awareness course catering for learner drivers. Designed to help learner drivers be safer on our roads, the training is the perfect opportunity to step into the shoes of more vulnerable road users –

including those on bikes, on foot and those with disabilities – and provide participants with a greater understanding of their needs.

WALK CYCLE VOTE ACTIVE TRAVEL BUDGET THANK YOU!

In October Walk Cycle Vote supporters gathered in Glasgow to thank Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf, for the doubling of the active travel budget to £80m per year.

There was a celebratory ringing of bike bells and the Minister was thanked with a slice of “rocky road” cake. Although this is by no means the end of the campaigning journey, the budget increase marked an important milestone on the road to an active Scotland and one worth celebrating.

DUTCH REACH TO SAVE LIVESThe Dutch Reach is a technique taught to drivers to make it easier to see cyclists. Drivers and passengers each use their far hand to open their door, which forces them to turn their torso. That makes it more likely they will look over their shoulder to check for oncoming cyclists who could get doored. Dooring is a traffic collision in which a cyclist is struck by a car door. The Dutch reach is a simple but very effective technique to avoid dooring and save lives.

AIR POLLUTION LOWEMISSION ZONE

The Scottish Government recently announced that it will work in partnership with Glasgow City Council to develop a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in the city – the first in Scotland. The proposals will improve air quality in

the city centre and the aim is to have the LEZ in place by the end of 2018. Eliminating air pollution hotspots will result in improved health, and will ensure Glasgow continues to be one of the most attractive places to live, work and visit.

OPERATION CLOSE PASSOperation Close Pass sees plain clothed police take to the streets to highlight the space cyclists need for everyone to use our roads safely. Drivers who pass an unmarked police cyclist too closely are pulled over and given advice using a specially designed mat which shows how much space a person on a bicycle needs when overtaking them. It is hoped that the scheme will be rolled out across Scotland.

SOUTH CITY WAY AND WOODLANDS MINI-HOLLAND PROJECT

Glasgow City Council has won funding from Sustrans Scotland’s Community Links PLUS competition for two significant infrastructure projects.

The South City Way will see a two-mile Copenhagen-style segregated bike lane between Queen’s Park and the Merchant City. Go Bike is supporting a new group being set up - Friends of South City Way - to support the new route and the group aims to minimise misinformation and increase local support.

The Woodlands “Mini Holland” creates a Dutch-style cycle-friendly design of streets and public spaces. The design creates better streets and places for people, promoting increased uptake of walking and cycling and is associated with greater use of local businesses.

EUROPEAN CYCLE CHALLENGE 2017The European Cycling Challenge is the biggest urban cyclists’ team competition, which takes place every May. This is the second year that Glasgow has entered the competition and over 650 cyclists signed up as part of the Glasgow City Region team, which covered 8 local authorities. Glasgow finished a respectable 18th out of 52 European cities. The data collected throughout the month creates heat maps which can be used to identify popular cycling routes and locations. In the local area the NCN7 through Whiteinch and the Clyde Tunnel are busy areas for cycling!

ROAD SAFETY WEEK 2017

Road Safety Week is the UK’s biggest road safety event, coordinated annually by Brake, the road safety charity. This year the week will run from Monday 20 to Sunday 26 November 2017 and the theme will be Speed Down Save Lives. In the UK speeding is still a major problem. It causes needless crashes, untold suffering and stops people living safe and healthy lives. Road Safety Week aims to inspire thousands of schools, organisations and communities to take action on road safety and promote life-saving messages during the Week and beyond.
