Vow #35The Name works beyond gender.

“If, when I attain Buddhahood, sentient beings in the immeasurable and inconceivableBuddha-lands of the ten directions who, having heard my Name, rejoice in faith, awaken aspiration for Enlightenment and wish to renounce womanhood, should afterdeath be reborn again as women, may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.”

One of our main concerns is “good health,” or “good and strong physical body,” In otherwords, when we are healthy, we are free from worries, anxieties, and troubles. Indeed, when we are healthy, our bodies are containers of pleasure. When we are not healthy orstrong enough, our bodies become containers of troubles and sufferings.

The following Vows are related to our physical bodies:

- Vow #3: All sentient beings in my land should be the color of pure gold… (We see beyond skin color.)

- Vow #4: All sentient beings in my land should be of one appearance…. (We see beyond ugliness and beauty.)

- Vow #6: All sentient beings in my land possess the divine eye of seeing… (We possess the perfect eyes.)- Vow #7: All sentient beings in my land possess the divine ear of hearing… (We possess the perfect ears.)- Vow #9: All sentient beings in my land possess the divine legs of traveling.. (We possess the perfect legs to walk.)- Vow #10: All sentient beings in my land have no attachment to their bodies.

(We see beyond our bodies.)- Vow #15:All sentient being in my land have unlimited life-spans…….

(We can control our life spans as we wish.)- Vow #26: All sentient beings in my land possess the perfect and strong bodies. (We are free from sickness, injury, or fatigue.)- Vow#35: All women exist beyond gender, and are free from any trouble inherent to womanhood.

I have listened to the vows, and I now hear the voice of Wisdom and Compassion. Itsays, “Don’t worry about your body! Just recite my Name and come to my world, I surelyprotect you!” Each vow identifies our concerns and worries. Each vow above also getsrid of our worries and troubles related to physical body. Hello everyone, welcome to November! I hope thatyou all had a wonderful October and that everyoneis sufficiently recovered from our 100th Yearcelebration. As long as we’re on the topic, I wouldlike to extend my sincerest thanks to the centennialcommittee for the years of hard work that they putinto this celebration and to congratulate them on theamazing results. I think everyone would agree thatthe whole celebration has been amazing. In additionto the committee, I would also like to thankeveryone who helped with this celebrationthroughout the year. Whether attending, helping toorganize or helping with set up and take down, allhands lent helped to make the year’s eventssuccessful and fun.And how perfect that we now find ourselvesentering the month when the words ‘grateful’,‘thanks’ and ‘gratitude’ are consistently on people’sminds. This being the first part of our centennial’stheme ‘Gratitude for the Past, Aspirations for theFuture’, these particular words have been veryprominent for us all year. However, while thesewords are incredibly important to us, I will not usethe November article to talk about gratitude. It hasbeen ‘done to death’ and instead I will focus on thesecond half of the theme, ‘aspirations for the future’.In Jodo Shinshu, when we talk about aspiration, weare referring to the bodhisattvas wish to become aBuddha. This wish or aspiration leads thebodhisattva to practice diligently for many eons, making and fulfilling vows that will lead them toeventually become Buddhas. The bodhisattvas’aspirations typically come after they haveencountered a Buddha. They are so admiring of theperfect qualities of the Buddha that they desire tobecome like them. The aspiration is deepened whenthey understand the suffering of all beings and thendesire to be Buddhas so that they may lead all

beings to enlightenment. This was the path taken bythe bodhisattva Dharmakara who worked tirelesslyto eventually become Amida Buddha, the Buddha ofimmeasurable wisdom and compassion and it is thispath that we should be mindful of when consideringour own ‘aspirations for the future.’The bodhisattvas are in awe of the Buddhas theyencounter and as they move through their practices, they become aware of all of the infinite Buddhas ofthe past who have also worked tirelessly to achievetheir goal of enlightenment. They learn from thosewho have gone before but also adapt and add tothese lessons as they go so that those who followwill be able to move forward, expanding the greatwisdom of enlightenment to fit each newenvironment. Though the work of becoming aBuddha requires an inconceivable length of time andthe strength to endure and overcome all obstacles, the basic lessons of their paths is something that canbe clearly applied to our centennial theme; learnfrom those who have gone before but let thatknowledge grow and change so that those whocome after will be able to understand andappreciate it.And so, as we begin to move toward the end of ourcentennial year we must certainly recall in gratitudeall those before us who worked to keep our templesalive so that we would have a place to gather andhear the Dharma. But we must also consider thattheir paths were the paths of the past. The ways thatour predecessors built and maintained the templeswere perfectly suited for their time and place butthose of us here and now must adapt these lessons ifwe wish to pass the Dharma on to our futuregenerations. The Dharma is eternal, but we are notand therefore we must do what we can to ensurethat all those who follow will be able to hear andappreciate the great wisdom and compassion of theBuddha’s teaching.

YBA Newsletter Articleby Anna Tsuchimoto

As we watch leaves fall off of their trees, and theColorado cold rolls in, the normal temple-happenings are going on. The bake-sales, familyservice, Dharma school, etc. It seems like anormal start to the Dharma school year, right?Oh, no. It’s not a normal year at all. On the firstweekend of October, the temple celebrated its100th Year Anniversary. After the almost threeyears of preparation, I know I am speaking onbehalf of the YBA, all of Dharma school, and thewhole sangha, when I say it was a hugesuccess and we are all so incredibly happy withhow it turned out. Personally, I have never felt sotouched and proud of something. It was anhonor to be part of something so big.

On the other end of October (the lastweekend of the month), we celebrated ourannual Aki Matsuri. The YBA would like to thankeveryone who continues to make this event funfor everyone, and we hope to continue thetradition for years to come.

Now the next event on our calendar:Turkey Bingo. YBA will make their traditionalThanksgiving dinner, there will be a raffle, and ofcourse lots and lots of Bingo. The temple isrequesting for members to bring in and donateitems for the raffle, as the event cannot be asbig and popular as it has been without things toraffle off.

Thank you to everyone who aids inmaking these events possible!

TSDBT 100th Anniversary Weekend Celebration Recapby Richard Yoshida, Co-chairperson, 100th Year Celebration Committee

We, the 100th Year Celebration

Committee, are elated!! After three

years of planning, “blood, sweat and

tears,” the Tri-State/Denver Buddhist

Temple highlighted the year-long

celebration with a fabulous weekend

September 30 – October 2, 2016. It

took a lot of hard work and long

hours for so many of our Sangha’s

Committee members to accomplish

this feat. We received a multitude of

accolades from members and friends,

many who attended from out of state,

who described the weekend as a

wonderful, awesome event! All who

worked on the Committee (and sub-

committees) should be very proud of

array of historical displays prepared by our Sangha and

community friends. The social highlight of the weekend

was an elegant Saturday evening banquet which was

magically created by Co-chairperson, Ann Yoshihara-

Murphy. The 440+ guests were efficiently accommodated

by the Registration Committee - Debby Tanigawa, Junko

Manley, and Wendy Thompson with expert help by Mabel

Googins.

occasion.

The 2016 celebration, included many events and projects

throughout the year. The Sept/Oct weekend was filled

with several meaningful activities: the Affirmation,

Nokotsudo Dedication, and Memorial/100th Year

Anniversary services; a religious panel discussion;

fabulous breakfasts and lunches; wonderful memorabilia

presented in Hollywood-like swag bags; an expansive

At the banquet, we were honored with the

attendance of Rev. Kodo Umezu, Bishop, and

Mr. Ken Tanimoto, BCA President. The

keynote speaker, Dr. Scott Mitchell delivered

a superb message relating to the future

visions of Jodo Shinshu in America. Mr.

Makoto Ito Consul General of Japan in

Denver honored us with his attendance as

well. And of course, significant others graced

us with their presence.

Actor (and fellow Jodo Shinshu Buddhist)

George Takei produced a short congratulatory

video for our occasion, encouraging us with

words based upon a Star Trek movie

Shibata), and the DVD video presentation were available

to all who attended the banquet. Copies, as requested by

the BCA, will be mailed to Kyoto, Japan for his Eminence

Kojun Ohtani, Monshu.

The history and future of the TSDBT’s Temples, affiliated

groups and organizations were assembled through

photographs, books, artifacts, collections, etc. – all artfully

displayed in the Temple’s gymnasium. Shirley Tsuchimoto

deserves credit for organizing the many exhibitors who, in

turn, spent hundreds of hours designing each display.

Members and visitors alike marveled at the whole exhibit.

There were so many more events through our 3-year

journey; myriads joined to make each a rousing success.

Many compliments were received for our

accomplishments, including highly appreciated

comments from Bishop Umezu and his wife, Janet, for

the outstanding job and attention to detail of every

aspect of the events. The hospitality and personalized

transportation provided by Stacey Umemoto Ospina,

Chairperson, and her committee brought raves and

gratitude from the visiting guests and dignitaries, as well.

As the 100th Anniversary Committee, we are extremely

proud and happy to have been able to generate and share

all the events celebrating the Temple’s 100th Anniversary.

With the culmination of a spectacular weekend, we feel this

positive energy transfers to our fellow Sangha members, as

well. We have a few more activities being planned to

complete the year, we hope all the 2016 celebrations serve

as a springboard for our Sangha to grow and continue

into the next 100 years.
