Voting and Praying for the President

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings

be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions,

so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.”

-1 Timothy 2:1-2

Dear Motley UMC Friends,

Election Day, November 8, will soon be upon us. The presidential campaign is winding down. I can hear many of you saying, “Thank God.” It’s been a tough campaign, all right. It’s been bitter and rancorous with accusations, smear tactics, suspicions, and scandal swirling around. Many of us are not thrilled with our choices for candidates. Polls say that most of our fel-low Americans will vote more against a candidate in-stead of for a preferred candidate.

It’s tempting to just throw your hands up and succumb to discouragement, but Christians are called to be bear-ers of hope. God is at work in the world. Seldom, if ev-er, do we have perfect candidates. Don’t be intimidated by the various voices around you. Do not retreat to the side-lines. Go out and vote for the candidate of your choice. Vote as your conscience informs you. And yes, allow your faith to inform your conscience. Thank God that we still live in a free nation. So speak out. Exercise your right. Fulfill your Christian duty. Go and vote.

And then pray. No matter which candidate wins, he or she will need God’s help and our prayers. The stagger-ing challenges facing the nation will be before the newly elected leader. The Word of God instructs us to devote ourselves to prayer for our leaders, which of course, would include our President. For some of us, this will feel right because we voted for said candidate in the

Page 3: November 2016 Volume 36, Issue # 11 - MotleyUMC and are in sympathy with ... Swan Valley Lutheran Church in Leader will be co ... trucks, slinky, finger puppet, marbles, yo-yo, jump

election and are in sympathy with that point of view. For others, this will be difficult because we did not vote for said candidate or have great consternation about said candi-date’s policies and/ or character. In this instance, praying may feel too much like agreeing. But, it would seem that if we struggle with the person in the office, doubling our ef-forts to pray rather than not praying for him or her at all would make more sense.

Whatever one’s politics may be, I think it makes sense that all wise and fair-minded people desire for the next presi-dent to succeed. Furthermore, it is most appropriate that all people of faith unite to devote themselves to fervent, faithful prayer on our new President’s behalf. To assist you with this task, let me offer the following prayer:

O Lord our God, Sovereign of the Universe,

we unite our hearts in prayer for our newly elected

President N.

We dare to believe, by the mystery of the working of your will,

You have elevated N. to serve our nation

by divine appointment and for such a time as this.

We commend N. to your love and grace.

Let your favor rest upon him/ her.

Shower him/ her with wisdom and compassion.

Make him/ her attentive to enduring principles,

tempered by discipline,

and focused on the well-being of the nation,

in the short as well as the long run.

Guard his/ her heart and guide his/ her steps,

that s/he may lead with humility, integrity, and vision.

May this presidency bring unity to our divided nation,

creative solutions to the difficult challenges we face,

and usher in an era of justice and peace.

Amen.

A Thanksgiving Day Prayer

Lord, so often times, as any other day

When we sit down to our meal and pray

We hurry along and make fast the blessing Thanks, amen. Now please pass the dressing

We're slaves to the old factory overload

We must rush our prayer before the food gets cold

But Lord, I'd like to take a few minute more

To really give thanks to what I'm thankful for

For my family, my health, a nice soft bed

My friends, my freedom, a roof over my head

I'm thankful right now to be surrounded by those

Whose lives touch me more than they'll ever possibly know

The ministry of caring is a way of being faithful among people who have experienced pain or loss. Car-ing is not a program to be accomplished at the church. Every day brings an opportunity to care for a family mem-ber who has experienced disappointment, a person who moved in next door and is lonely, one who is in pain in a hospital room, a co-worker who has experienced a di-vorce, a friend who has had to retired, or a person at the church whose loved one has died. All the areas of every-day life provide opportunities to care. One of the reasons that it is critical for the un-ordained to respond to God’s call to care is that they are in every corner of society at any given moment and are able to respond to the hurting persons they see. God loves and cares for all persons, especially those who are in pain in their life’s journeys. God calls people to fulfill a ministry of caring as the Body of Christ, gives gifts that are necessary for caring, and provides day to day support through the Holy Spirit. Look for those around you that are hurting and reach out the hand of Christ through a caring visit through this coming holiday season.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours,

Yours are the eyes through which to look out Christ's compassion to the world

Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good;

Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now.” ― Teresa of Ávila
