Message from
Membership In this month’s
message I thought I
would use my
allotted newsletter
space to share some photos on page 4
from two new social events both of
which just so happened to take place in
the fall. Tailgating (September 22) and
Blues & Brews (October 14) were very
successful and as a result, dates have
already been secured for 2017’s Social
Calendar.
It’s hard to believe that the Holiday
Open House, Gingerbread House
Decorating and Breakfast with Santa
events are just around the corner. These are all very popular member
events so please sign up early.

Club News
From the General Manager
I begin this month’s article by providing an update on
the wonderful Chris McClure piece written by
member Chris Rhoades and featured in the
September newsletter. Subsequent to the publishing
of that newsletter, Chris received a call from Jeff
McClure, Chris’ brother, who lives in Detroit. Jeff
and his parents had received a copy of the article and of course
enjoyed it immensely. Jeff shared additional stories with Chris and
asked if there was anything he could do to show his appreciation. I of
course said there was nothing he needed to do, but it inspired me to
share this update. I heard from many, members and staff alike, who
found Chris Rhoades’ article very interesting and informative. Chris,
thank you! You are to be congratulated for bringing this story to so
many who didn’t know anything about Chris McClure.
As I write this it is two days after our annual staff appreciation event.
As usual it was a fun event attended by many, and from the looks of
things a good time was had by all. One activity really struck a chord
with me Monday and provided me a better appreciation of what this
event really means for some. I saw at least three instances of a couple
of staff members heading off in golf carts simply to enjoy the beauty
of the golf course. These particular people had no clubs and no
intention of actually playing golf. They just said that they really wanted
to see what it looked like (out there)! Everyone who attends really
enjoys the day and appreciates the opportunity provided by you. I am
often thanked by staff for having the party and I am always quick to
say that it is you, the members, who we all need to thank for this day.
Thank you.
I think it’s quite safe to say that anyone with more than a passing
interest in the game of golf was touched in some way by the recent
passing of Arnold Palmer. He was truly a living legend and deserving
of his nickname, The King. Even if you weren’t a golfer, you saw him
on television pitching everything from Penzoil Motor Oil to Rolex.
He was a part of our culture for decades and someone we all trusted
and almost felt we knew. One of The Woodlands Club founders, Dr.
Bob DeRice, wrote a piece for us detailing a memorable week he
spent with Arnold some 30 years ago. You can find it on our website,
or view on the bulletin board across from the elevator on the lower
floor.
Until next month, we will see you around the Club,
Bill Robinson

Aquatics 6TH
ANNUAL FAMILY & INDIVIDUAL
WINTER SWIM CHALLENGE
November 1-February 28
Cost: Free!
Welcome to our 6th Annual Winter Swim Challenge! Once again we will be
offering the Family Challenge category and the 100 Mile distance as well as
maintaining our traditional 20 & 50 Mile challenge format. Starting November
1 and continuing through February, we will be running a FUN 4 month self-recording distance swim program for the average and slightly above average
swimmer.
We have selected 20, 50, and 100 Mile swim distances that can be achieved in
three to four months depending on distance and level of commitment. You
can even miss a week or two and finish on time. If you have never done much
swimming but know how to swim, this is a nice way to surprise yourself with
how much you can accomplish. The other benefit is that when mid-February
comes, you’ll be all ready for that warm winter vacation.
The distance challenge is all about achieving the distance so you can swim any
stroke, use fins or even just kick or pull to achieve your goal. It doesn’t
matter if you finish first, last or somewhere in between. All finishes are
equally important! Along the way, fun little prizes will be awarded to those
who meet their monthly targets. The aquatics staff will support you, so give
us guidance about what you’d like… maybe some fun sets, maybe some
technique drills… maybe just be left alone. Registrants who complete the
challenge will receive prizes.
Register by phone (781-3104 ext.112) or via e-mail to [email protected]
FAMILY 20, 50, or 100 MILE Swim Challenge
All family members compile their distances to contribute to the total.
Husbands and wives make a great team too! Encourage other families to join
your family in the swim challenge.
20 MILE Swim Challenge (35,200 yards total)
This is a Pro-Active Winter/Holiday swim challenge for the average person.
Swim 108 lengths of the pool each week (2700 yards/week) and rack up 6
miles/month. Choose your schedule distance. For example: 3 times/week = 36 lengths each visit, 2 times = 54, 1 = 108 OR you can swim more some
weeks than others
50 MILE Swim Challenge (88,000 yards total)
For the more experienced swimmer. Swim 6,300 yards per week.
100 MILE Swim Challenge (176,000 yards total)
For the more experienced swimmer. Swim 12,600 yards per week.

FIT TIP:
FIVE SIGNS YOU’RE WORKING OUT TOO HARD Exercise needs to be consistent for success. But if is consistently too hard, it
will be more of a detriment than a benefit. These five signs will help you to re-
evaluate and reconnect with your workouts.
1. You stop enjoying it
Exercise should be fun and you should look forward to it or at least look for-
ward to how you feel afterward. You can always scale back the intensity or
incorporate new activities to make things fun. Change it up.
2. You’re not finishing your workouts
If you are consistently not finishing your workouts you are working out too
hard or need more of an implementation of recovery workouts.
3. You’re doing HIIT training every day
High Intensity Interval Training is not designed to be done every day. In every class and with every instructor you hear about the HIIT Training Philosophy,
but it is designed to be 1-2 days a week. If you are doing that everyday your
energy stores will not replenish in time for your next work out.
4. You’re experiencing pain
With consistent intense workouts, the cellular damage to the muscles as well
as the energy systems do not heal. When the muscles cells do not have time
to recover, you are more likely to get muscle strains from too much use or
not the right use.
5. You feel fatigued after your workout
A good workout should leave you a little tired, but mentally charged. If you
have overall fatigue, then the workout is too hard. If you are feeling tired for
hours instead of moments, time to cut back on intensity.

GOLF COURSE
CLOSING DATE Sunday, November 20
In order to “put the course to
bed,” the golf course will close
to all play at the end of the
day on Sunday, November 20.
From the Director of Golf If you haven’t tried the golf simulator yet, it is really
great! It is a system that calculates launch angle, distance,
club and ball speed and spin rates while providing instant
feedback. It doubles as one of the most precise club
fitting tools available today. This is definitely not your
father’s golf simulator!
When taking Golf lessons in the simulator you will be able to see not just
the specifics mentioned above but the path of your swing as well. It’s so
much easier to improve with tangible feedback.
It’s hard to believe you can play Pebble Beach without leaving Maine. The
simulator is very easy to use and is incredibly accurate. The practice range
feature offers a ton of useful feedback and provides easy to read graphics.
As an alternative, the indoor practice net will remain available and is located along with the simulator in the bag storage room (off the fitness
entry alcove). You may enter through the door located in the fitness
alcove during normal club hours. Just follow the signs.
Both the low tech net and the high tech simulator are available on a first
come-first served basis. There are no “tee times” for the net. Reserve the
simulator by going to the golf page on the club’s website and follow the
directions. It’s easy. There is no charge for full golf members to use the
simulator although guest fees do apply.
You must bring your own golf clubs or make arrangements to borrow
clubs from the golf staff in advance.
BE SAFE–LOOK BEFORE YOU SWING-MAKE SURE THE AREA IS
CLEAR
Have fun!

A NOVEMBER GOLF TIP?
BRRRRR
Although no one knows what Mother Nature will bring for November, it can
be a great time to play. The trick to playing in cool weather is...DO WHAT-
EVER YOU HAVE TO DO TO KEEP YOUR HANDS WARM!
Here are a few ideas to make chilly weather golf more fun:
Don’t start a round cold because you’ll never get warm. Dress warmly
ahead of time. You can always shed a layer of clothing.
Walking is warmer than taking a cart.
Avoid injury, warm up. Walk briskly from the parking lot to the golf shop.
It gets the blood flowing. Don’t forget to stretch.
The ball does not travel as far in cold weather. You will lose about two
yards for every ten degree decrease in temperature. More if the ball is cold as well. Take one more club on a 50 degree day.
With additional layers of clothing it is important to note that your shoul-
der turn may be restricted. If I am at a distance where I normally hit 7
iron, I may choke down and inch or two on a 5 iron. My focus is on solid
contact.
