At Orchard Park our students
have access to an online math
program called Dreambox.
This program helps all stu-
dents achieve better, faster
math profiency.
Your child can access Dream-
box Learning from any com-
puter 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week. Simply visit the
school’s website at
orchardpark.dsbn.org and

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF DREAMBOX LEARNING Time on DreamBox - Your child should spend at least 60-90 minutes a week and complete at
least 5-8 lessons. This amount ensures that DreamBox can accurately track your child’s learning
path. This does not have to be in a single session. However, a minimum of 20 minutes per session
helps ensure your child has sufficient time to finish a lesson in a single session.
Stay on Task - To make sure your child’s progress is swift and accurate, keep them focused on
any recommended lessons. This with be either flashing yellow lessons in the Adventure Park (in the
Primary Environment, grades K-2) or any lesson available on the My Lessons page (in the Interme-
diate and Middle School Environment, grades 3 and higher).
Complete Every Lesson They Start - Dreambox needs the completed information from recom-
mended lessons to help pick the next best lesson for your child. If you child doesn’t complete the
lesson, either by exiting or by closing the browser, Dreambox cannot make these choices. Your
child then has to redo the lesson they didn’t finish again from the beginning. So to reduce frustra-
tion, have them complete all lessons they begin.
Mistakes are OK - Your child should not shy away from incorrect answers. These wrong answers
actually help DreamBox find the best lesson for them to help build their strengths.

SAFETY PRESENTATION
Job Action Update
This fall, Orchard Park students learned about one of the funda-
mental rights they have as Canadian citizens: the right to vote.
With the Federal Election approaching rapidly, students in
Grades 4-8 took part in a variety of activities to better under-
stand the party leaders and their platforms to help them make an
informed decision on who they would vote for. These activities
turned into interesting discussions at school, and for many students,
at home as well. On October 16, students then took part in a
mock election set up just like a real voting station, complete with
voting screens and official ballot boxes. Mrs. Lane’s Grade 4/5
class took on important roles such as Scrutineers, Deputy Returning
Officers and Ballot Counters for the election. After the voting
concluded and the ballots were tallied, the results showed us just
how tight a race it had been. The results were as follows: Rob
Nicholson (Conservative) - 42 votes, Carolynn Iaononni (NDP) - 39
votes, Ron Planche (Liberal) - 33 votes, Steven Soos (Green) - 16
votes, and 2 spoiled ballots. Our results were phoned into Student
Vote headquarters, then released on television alongside our rid-
ing results on Monday, October 19. We hope this activity will turn
Orchard Park students into lifelong voters!
As you are likely aware, the Ontario Government has been
in negotiations with the Elementary Teachers Federation of
Ontario (ETFO) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees
(CUPE). ETFO and CUPE are engaged in job action that
restricts some of their administrative tasks.
It is for this reason that elementary schools must postpone
student Progress Reports which are normally scheduled for
distribution in November.
Additionally, ETFO announced the withdrawal of extracur-
ricular activities starting October 28th. All elementary
sports, clubs and after school activities in the DSBN will be
postponed at this time.
The District School Board of Niagara respects and values all
the efforts that our unionized staff make to help students
achieve success every day. The DSBN is continuing local
negotiations in good faith. We remain hopeful that an
agreement will be reached soon.
November 16 to 20 is Bullying Awareness Week. On Friday, Novem-
ber 20 staff and students will be receiving their OP Pink Shirts. A BIG
thank you to our School Council for purchasing the pink shirts for the stu-
dents. Thank you to those families that sent in the $2 towards the cost
of the shirt (if you haven’t sent that in yet you can still send it in).
CROSS COUNTRY Despite a quick tryout, Or-
chard Park fielded a very
competitive cross country
team this year. During the
Area meets, the following
students won ribbons for
finishing in the top 10 racers
for Niagara Falls: Danielle
S., Kaydence K., Piper H.
and Cooper H. Ten of our
runners qualified and went
on to compete in the District
meet on October 15th. Our
top finishers were: Piper H.
(12th), Kaydence K. (23rd),
Danielle S. (36th) and Lucas
R. (40th). Congratulations to
our hard-working cross coun-
try team on a successful sea-
son! Thank you for your
dedication and hard work!
Team members were

their name qualified for the
District meet): Shawn G.,

By Isabel H. Grade 3 - On Thursday, October 22nd, the Primary
students saw a Safety Presentation. We learned about road
safety when you cross the road stop what you’re doing and obey
the crossing guard. Stay 2 or 3 big steps away from the road.
The people who taught us were crossing guards.
By Rachel C. Grade 3 - On Thursday, October 22nd the Primary
students saw a Safety Presentation. In the Safety Presentation we
learned about stuff we should do like stay 2 to 3 steps away from
the road and stop using bikes, skateboards and take our ear
buds. The people that did the presentation work for the city.
By Maguire S. Grade 3 - On Thursday, October 22nd, the Pri-

learned that when you get to road you have
to take 1 or 2 steps back and there were 2
crossing guards there.

On Wednesday, November 11th we will
have our Remembrance Day Assembly at
10:45 (break will begin at 10:00). We
will be collecting donations for poppies
that morning. This service will
recognize and express our appreciation
to those who served and paid the
supreme sacrifice in all world conflicts.
Parents are welcome to
attend. Thank you to Ms
Bigford and Ms Prodger for
organizing this assembly.
