NOVA: Making North America Wednesdays, Nov. 4, 11 & 18 8 p.m. on NET Mighty forces molded North America – fiery eruptions, titanic floods, the grinding of great ice sheets and massive impacts from space all shaped our majestic continent. This epic three-part series unfolds in a forgotten world that existed long before our own, crossed by long-lost mountain ranges, deserts the size of Africa and a vast inland sea. Renowned paleontologist Kirk Johnson leads a spectacular journey through time and examines three fundamental questions: How was the continent built? How did life evolve here? And how has the continent shaped us?
ON THE COVER
It has become cliché to write about being thankful around Thanksgiving, but I can’t help being grateful for many things in my life – family, friends, fresh fall air, spectacular skies and getting to work every day with creative, caring people – at a job I love.
One of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions is catching up on television and going to see the newest holiday movie. But, the big screen is more than just pictures. For me, it’s the music that can really make a story come alive. In a new special on NET Television in November, superstar tenor Andre Bocelli celebrates classic cinematic songs featured in films such as Doctor Zhivago, Love Story and The Godfather, as well as popular songs from stage musicals. It’s a beautiful program made possible by member support and we’re happy to share it with you as the holiday season begins.
Another tradition is sharing a meal together – and every family has favorite recipes for the stuffing, salads and pies that grace the table. Each year as Thanksgiving approaches, fans ask NPR correspondent Susan Stamberg for her mother-in-law’s recipe for cranberry relish. It’s unique, a “must hear” and infamous in public radio land.
Visit netNebraska.org/radio for the recipe and a link to hear the story.
Each month as I write this column, I think it’s important to thank our members (YOU!) for your generous support for all we do at NET. Along with quality television, radio and online content, your gifts
help provide educational programs for children across Nebraska.
During the last year, our Ready To Learn team visited 18 communities, sharing resources with more than 6,000 families and children at Catholic Social Services Food Distribution Centers and events such as Auburn Literacy Night, and Popcorn in the Park at the Dakota City Elementary School. Your support truly matters – to NET and to the people we serve.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving I’m reminded of these wise words from Fred Rogers: Take some time to think about what and who you are thankful for. Not just today – but every day.

Don’t forget, it’s hug-a-person-day,” Donna Moyer said she heard one day on NET Radio – and she took it to heart. “I like to express my appreciation to those who do nice things for me,” she explained. “When a man opens a door, I look him straight in the eye and say thank you very much, you are a gentleman. For a woman, I say you have lovely manners. People are surprised, but they like it,” she explained. Who doesn’t want to feel appreciated and valued? It has been said that a hug or kind word is the best gift
you can give. One size fits all, and no one ever minds if you return it.
An NET member and supporter for 23 years, Donna describes her appreciation for public radio.
“It is a station with a personality and one of our most valuable assets. I like to listen to the voices
of the announcers. They sound really attuned to the issues. Their stories are broader and help to explain how the world ticks. I like to listen to both the content and the announcer’s style,” Donna said. Born and raised in Grand Island, Donna has lived most of her life in Wood River. She was married to Charles “Chick” Moyer for 62 years before he died in 2014, and has four sons and one daughter. Donna graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in home economics. She worked at the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant near Grand Island before she and Chick bought the Bank of Wood River and insurance agency in 1952. The family-owned company, now the Heritage Group, Inc., has expanded over the years and operates in 13 Nebraska cities. Now an avid gardener, Donna says she listens to NET Radio while she works, and continues to support and promote the station. “NET Radio expands my life in this world,” she added.

Gifts to NET Generate Community Change As the year 2015 winds down, many NET supporters are considering what and how to give before Dec. 31. Cash gifts are always popular and deeply appreciated, but have you considered a gift of appreciated stock? Donating stock can prove to be good for you and even better for our community. For starters, a gift of appreciated stock can generate attractive tax savings. By donating appreciated stock that you’ve owned for more than a year, you would become eligible to claim a tax deduction for what
the stock is worth today as opposed to what you paid for it many years ago. This charitable deduction could help reduce your taxable income and ultimately your tax. If you decide instead to sell this same stock, you would be taxed on the gain, even if you ultimately decide
to donate the proceeds to a charity. Giving stock directly to NET can help keep your long-term gains in the community rather than on your federal tax return. Last but definitely not least, stock is a convenient way to increase your support. We know that many of our loyal supporters would like to do more to support NET’s mission, but are concerned about their cash flow. Donating appreciated stock allows you to hold on to your cash and perhaps make a bigger impact than you otherwise thought possible.
To get a head start on your year-end giving, contact one of our planned giving officers, or visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning.

The mission of NET is to enrich lives and engage minds by connecting communities and celebrating Nebraska with services that educate and enlighten.
PBS President Paula Kerger was in Nebraska Sept. 24 – 25. She spoke to NET staff and a small number of members at events in Lincoln. In Omaha, she spoke to more than 75 women in leadership positions who were invited to be part of the first partnership event between NET and ICAN (Institute for Career Advancement Needs). ICAN offers programs that guide both women and men as they manage today’s diverse business challenges.
Kerger also visited Lewis & Clark Middle School in Omaha to see work by students taking part in the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs program. The initiative gives middle and high school students the chance to shoot videos on local and national issues and possibly see their work appear on air.
While in Nebraska, Kerger was also interviewed by NET General Manager and CEO Mark Leonard. The two discussed NET, PBS and the future of television. The interview with Kerger will be
part of an upcoming television special, NET Celebrates 60 Years: A Conversation with PBS President Paula Kerger. It airs on NET Sunday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. CT and Sunday, Nov. 22 at 11:30 a.m. CT.
