Truly this is the heart of ministry – knowing that God loves you and that God loves your neighbor and allowing that to transform you and your relationship with others. And you are doing that over and over again in your daily life. When you talk about Jesus, when you share a facebook post, when you are vulnerable and open to what God might be asking you to do. Thank you for your good work in Jesus’ name. Thank you for your ministry. Pastor Abby

Sermon Matthew 22:1-14 October 12, 2014

As many of you know my brother got married last weekend. We all gathered in Philadelphia on Friday for the rehearsal. It was disorganized as many rehearsals are but how can it not be when so many excited and nervous people get together. Saturday began as a drizzly gray day but by the afternoon it was beautiful. It seemed as though everything was going to go perfectly. But when it came time for the wedding to begin the church was empty. Not one person who was invited to the wedding came. How is that even possible? There must have been some mistake so

the bride's dad sent out a search party to look for the people who he had painstakingly invited to the wedding. When the search party found the people who had been invited they actually laughed and said they wouldn't dream of attending such a wedding. As you can imagine Peter, the bride's dad was really angry now. He had worked hard and paid a lot of money to make this wedding happen so he sent out another search party to again request the presence of the guests at the wedding. And then - this is the real appalling part - some of the invited guests killed the search party. Peter was enraged - and in his rage he decided an eye for an eye was appropriate so he sent folks to go and kill the murderers and burn their homes. Things were going from bad to worse. But he had a wedding to throw. He had rented the reception hall, paid the caterer, he just needed guests. So he sent folks out one more time and told them to gather anyone they could find on the streets of Philadelphia. They gathered up homeless people, people out for an afternoon stroll. They gathered up illegal aliens, prostitutes, business people. Families, singles, gay people. And brought them all to the wedding. At least now there were guests there to celebrate Andrew and Jackie's marriage with them. Things finally seemed to have begun to go smoothly when some joker wouldn't put his wedding robe on. And boy was that the last straw after all the trouble

that God has invited you to the banquet both in this life and the next? Being invited to a wedding can be so stressful - you have to get a gift, make hotel reservations, find something to wear, get a babysitter and then walk around in uncomfortable shoes for hours. But the wedding that Jesus is inviting us too - the feast of love on this earth and in heaven - is much, much different. There's no need to bring a gift, no need to dress up, you can bring your whole family along. Everything is provided. All we have to do is come and enjoy. Now that is a wedding to die for.
