When you need financing in order to expand your business, where would you go for a loan? When you need cash management solutions to simplify your business operations, where would you go for assistance? A grocery store may not be the first place that comes to mind, but the bankers at First Bank Shelbyville want you to know all the reasons it should be! First Bank Shelbyville is a branch office of First Bank Richmond and is located inside the Shelbyville Kroger Store. They have been committed to serving financial needs in Shelby County for over 15 years. Their decision to build a new stand-alone branch in the near future is a commitment to increase the capacity for providing greater individualized customer attention and personal touches that only a community bank can offer.

The financial team at First Bank Shelbyville Branch is comprised of 5 women who work together to meet and exceed customer expectations. Customer Service Representatives, Kassy Wilson, Ashley Wise and Denise Carrier provide the first line of customer service. “We do this by listening closely for clues to what financial solutions they truly need,” says Wilson. At First Bank, each customer is seen as an individual. And this leads to successfully matching the First Bank product or service with the customer’s specific need.

As with many small offices team members are challenged to wear many hats. Cross-training the staff plays a huge role in the ability to provide seamless customer service. Assistant Branch Manager, Kelly Johnson carries the task of supervising daily operations, opening new accounts and general problem solving for customers. Johnson has been with First Bank for 15 years and has had numerous cross-training opportunities. “This gives me a solid foundation for staff leadership and dealing with daily challenges that arise,” according to Johnson.

Branch manager, Amy Larrison, is grateful for a staff that keeps everything running smoothly at the branch. In addition to overseeing the branch, a big portion of her job is business development which requires time away from the branch. “Business development starts with developing relationships. This requires spending time in the community and is an aspect of my job that I thoroughly enjoy,” Larrison says. First Bank is an employer that encourages involvement in the communities they serve. Larrison and her staff volunteer in various capacities for several organizations in Shelby County.

As a full service community bank, First Bank Shelbyville has the capacity to customize financial solutions that make sense and work for all types of clients. It isn’t about fitting a person or business into a specific matrix. The bankers at this community bank are concerned with structuring financial solutions that support the profitability, growth and the over-all best interest of their customers. Give them a call or stop by for a visit. Experience first-hand all they ways First Bank Shelbyville is “Doing Great Things Together.” To contact First Bank Shelbyville, call (317) 398-1000 or visit their branch located at 1601 East Michigan Road.

Women in Business

The Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women (INFBPW)-Shelbyville is one local Indiana club that belongs to District 2, which is comprised of members from Connersville, Fortville, Knightstown, New Albany, New Castle and Winchester. The INFBPW is a member of the National Business and Professional Women Foundation.

INFBPW was the first among women’s organizations to formally endorse the Equal Rights Amendment in 1937 and has led the drive for ratification ever since. BPW/USA has been a leader in passing much of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Pay Act to Title IX and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Today, BPW members of the United States continue to work for pay equality, civil rights and health issues. The Shelbyville Business and Professional Women’s Club was founded June 5, 1927, less than 10 years after the founding of BPW/USA.

Eighty seven years may seem a lifetime ago, but the issues and foundation are still the same. We represent women networking on the local, district, state and national level. We are volunteers, educators, business owners, employees and community leaders. Some of us work and some of us are retired. We are assertive, accommodating, dependable and respected. Our days are full but we find time to foster growth and function as a team to succeed and accomplish what our club founders envisioned for working women. INFBPW provides networking opportunities, resources, career positioning, educational programs and visibility for its members nationwide. For more than 95 years, INFBPW has worked on behalf of women and economic equality in the workplace.

Through the years, three major issues have shaped INFBPW legislative agenda: elimination of sex discrimination in employment, equal pay, and the need for a comprehensive equal rights amendment. BPW/USA formally endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment in 1937. Although the amendment was first introduced in 1923, it was not until 1972 that Congress passed it and sent it to the states for ratification. Within one year, 30 states ratified the ERA. By 1982, only five additional states ratified the amendment, three short of the 38 necessary for the final ratification.

Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women-ShelbyvillePay equality, a primary issue at the time of BPW/USA’s founding in 1919, continued to have great relevance. BPW/USA’s Red Purse Campaign capitalized on the media attention surrounding the 1988 presidential election.

Using the “BPW” acronym to represent “Better Pay for Women,” BPW/USA members carried red purses, which had become trendy symbols of economic inequality, and challenged elected officials on the issue of pay equality for women.

Each year BPW advocates across the country sponsor Equal Pay Day events to bring attention to our number one issue – pay equality. Due to the gender wage gap,

nationally women earn 77 cents to each dollar paid to male counterparts. Equal Pay Day was April 8th. In addition to the achievements for working women nationally, the local organization has touched hundreds of lives, young and old, in our community. Just within the decade the Shelbyville club has done thefollowing:

• Joined with the Chamber to sponsor political debates that helped the people choose one person to be their voice in

legislation or to be the new leader in our community.

• Was the first to introduce a project to raise funds for a scholarship for women of 30 years of age or older in Shelby County re-entering the work force, changing careers or who were displaced workers. The project would invite businesses that focused on women’s issues, women who ran their own business, or those that sold home products to public bazaars.

• Annually give a Career Advancement Award to help women to further their career.

• Annually present five Commercial monetary Awards to outstanding business students (male and female) in each of the five county high schools.

• Annually sponsor a Reality Store® for county seventh grade students. This program takes a student through a mock situation which leads the student through life’s journey to see what it takes to survive and succeed.

This month La Verna Lodge for Women celebrates its one year anniversary! The Lodge offers a peaceful and private setting for women as they begin the healing process and embrace a new life in recovery. Our holistic program encompasses the physical, emotional and spiritual sides of women and addiction. Since our opening, 34 women have chosen La Verna Lodge. The female residents enjoy the beautiful setting filled with wildlife and nature. They love the river that flows through

the property, spending time on the patio and around the fire pit, and the scenic drive up to the house. The property is perfect for physical exercise and wellness activities. One group of women started a vegetable garden where they grew tomatoes, peppers, green beans, radishes, squash, cucumber and romaine, which they then used for meal planning and cooking together. These women are creative and have had much success with expressive art therapy – collages, crafts, bead work, drawing, sewing, etc. These are just a few of the highlights! Would you like to learn more about La Verna Lodge for Women?

Please visit their website www.lavernalodge.com or contact Susan Day, Regional Relationship Manager, at [email protected].

CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions has established a local independent council on aging in Shelby County called the Shelby County Council on Aging. The council is comprised of dedicated volunteers who help define the problems and needs of older Hoosiers in Shelby County and help identify solutions. The Shelby County Council on Aging is a group of people from various organizations who focus on services to the elderly. Membership is free and open to anyone or any organization that has a sincere interest in the welfare and well-being of older adults in Shelby County. Join and share your opinions and concerns, learn about issues affecting you, your friends or loved ones, and experience activities and events that enrich the lives of others. Monthly meetings are held at 11 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month at The Horizon Center (Shelby Senior Services), 1504 South Harrison Street.

This group has teamed together for a project that assists Shelby County residents called “Holiday Hugs for Seniors.” This team of people will be collecting food and useful items to help nearly 100 isolated and frail elderly by providing everyday necessities and a few special items. This is a difficult time for us all; however, it is particularly difficult for people on fixed incomes. Many of our Shelby County seniors have to make tough decisions between medicine, food, and utilities. In addition to groceries, those providing direct support services to our seniors tell us there is also need for cleaning and laundry supplies, toiletries, paper products and postage stamps. Monetary donations are always accepted as the council will go out and purchase items needed. Our seniors always appreciate the gifts and food items as they are on limited incomes. They really appreciate someone coming to their home to visit when the bag is delivered. We welcome any business, church, community organization, group or individual to assist us with this very worthwhile project. If your group would like to collect donations, they can then be delivered to one of our locations or we can arrange for donations to be picked up at your location if needed. If you would like to make a monetary donation please contact one of our council members and we will be able to make good use in buying in bulk items needed for our

seniors. Donations will be accepted until November 19th. The gifts bags will be delivered from November 24th to December 15th.
