THIRD TIME LUCKY Practice makes perfect and Anne and Neil Blundell have put decades of kitchen renovation know-how to the test to achieve their third, and final, dream kitchen.

THE OWNERS Anne Blundell, a social work manager, and husband Neil, a company director. They have two daughters, Laura, 22, and Olivia, 19.

THEIR HOME A late 1950s detached red brick home in Warwickshire with four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

THE PROJECT The previous kitchen featured light ash cabinets with a breakfast bar and small separate dining table.

paint palette was selected to make the

most of the natural light that floods in from the

south-facing garden.

No strangers to kitchen renovations, this is the third time Anne and Neil Blundell have installed a new kitchen in the family home they have now lived in for 21

years. Various layout permutations have been tried and tested, including a central table with units all around that offered bags of storage but was too disparate. Next came a separate breakfast bar with smaller table, neither of which provided sufficient space. “This time we wanted an island with a really spacious, workable break-fast bar area, and a sociable layout that would make it easy to entertain,” says Anne. The space itself has also evolved

over the years, including a knock-through project that opened the kitchen into the dining room and the installation of two large glass doors leading to the garden. Both improvements have enhanced the social aspect of the room, but the couple also wanted the new kitchen to feel even more spacious by opting for the bare minimum number of cabinets and a relaxed, open layout. “Actually we’ve pared back the storage each time, by fine-tuning contents and relocating baking equipment and infrequently used items to the utility room,” says Anne. “One of our biggest lessons has been the realisation that a really efficient kitchen is all about having the things you use most closest to

A s the kitchen gets larger, the concept of what

makes a good layout has had to adapt. The

island workstation is a shining example.

Although its primary function is to cut down on

the distance between key work areas, and to provide plenty of prep

space, it has also become an important kitchen feature in its

own right. Designers frequently specify a different colour or

material for the island to create a striking focal point, and

more and more are turning to new materials to create dynamic

shapes and installations, highlighting this great feature with

a show-stopping extractor hood or statement lighting.

FORM AND FINISHA large-scale island allows the kitchen layout to be much simpler – so simple, in fact, it can be just a single wall of full-height cabinets, housing built-in ovens, coffee maker, fridge and freezer, with the island running parallel. This idea may feel modern and streamlined, but it isn’t too far removed from the ‘work table’ concept used in larger Victorian and Edwardian kitchens. A huge central table was used for preparation, serving, and as a general multipurpose surface. Many of the traditional bespoke manufacturers still include a work table/butcher’s block in their repertoire, often with a slatted storage shelf beneath, which is ideal for storing large ceramics and cookware. Contemporary kitchen designers are also moving towards ‘open’ island designs – which are essentially a large-scale table with shelves and storage below. It’s a lighter look than we’ve been used to, although imposing monolithic rectangular blocks are still popular, especially when clad in a striking finish, such as marble, concrete, burnished metal or bookmatched wood veneer.

SHAPE SHIFTINGModern materials, such as composites, allow for more fluid shapes such as curves and angles. You may have to work that bit harder to get decent storage out of a curved island but the real bonus here is improved flow. Curves are an excellent way to guide users around the space – keeping guests and children away from hot spots while still giving access to the drinks stations. Modern materials, especially Corian, Silestone and Caesarstone, lend themselves particularly well to creating curves, perhaps embracing integral sinks and drainers and extending the sweeping lines into side-supports.

PRACTICAL PREPThe main idea behind an island is to increase worktop space. It’s a joy to be able to spread out baking and prep equipment across a surface that is deeper than the limited 60cm that’s the norm for standard cabinetry. An island can be split into various areas – perhaps including prep, baking, serving and dining zones – demarcated by using different levels and materials. The dining/breakfast bar space is often

when it comes to using colour in the kitchen, the temptation is to play it safe with neutrals – after all, a new scheme is a big investment and you want it to last for many years without looking dated. But vibrant hues will add warmth and personality to a room, especially if your kitchen is part of a larger living space, and you intend to spend a lot

of time there. And the good news is that you don’t have to go overboard, unless, of course, colour is your thing. Something as simple as paint is easy to update if you tire of it, bright accessories, such as chairs or blinds, feel even less permanent, and don’t overlook lighting – a good scheme can be programmed to add, and change, the colour on demand. Appliance

manufacturers are very canny with colour, especially for those pieces that are designed to be a focal point, such as a range cooker or a retro-style fridge freezer. As with any decorating scheme, take time to explore your chosen palette and always try out swatches in situ so you can see how they’ll look, but also how they change with the light at different times of day.

the look... try adding colour to your kitchen design – there’s a shade out there to suit any space

Splashing outGlass splashbacks not only give a clean, streamlined finish, but they can also be back-painted in any shade, making them a great way to add a pop of colour without going overboard. The deep-purple splashback in this Mowlem & Co kitchen has a textured finish for visual interest. Kitchens from Mowlem & Co start at £30,000.

Hot trendCreate an impact by choosing from the increasingly wide selection of appliances in bright shades, such as this Mercury 1200 range cooker in Blueberry, £3,470. Available in eight different finishes, from white to purple, a large design like this looks great next to wood or plain cabinets.

Shining exampleThe gloss red finish of the kitchen in this listed barn in Suffolk was chosen for its striking contrast with the natural materials throughout the space. Kitchens from the Arcos range by Schmidt, in hi-gloss Porpora, start at £6,500 including standard appliances.

decorate … warm tones of copper add sophisticated elegance that will only get better over time

Copper may be the material of the moment but that’s not to say it’s a flash in

the pan. Warm, elegant and with a finish that ages beautifully, it works a

particular magic in the kitchen, evoking the timeless appeal of the classic

French kitchen with its rows of polished cookware. Yet it can also be

strikingly modern – a material an architect might use to bring a creative, organic feel to

surfaces, or the perfect touch to add warmth to an industrial scheme. Whether used on

large expanses or as a final accent, it’s a dramatic material that makes an impact.

F I N I S H I N G L I N E SIf you have your heart set on something bespoke, consider using a cladding service, illustrated here in an architect’s kitchen. The beauty of unvarnished copper is that it will oxidise over time, developing a stunning patina like no other. appliances will create a stunning focal point in

your kitchen and help you prepare food like a pro

W hisper it quietly, but the secret to a successful kitchen is practicality, not prettiness.

Bespoke cabinets with designer flourishes may look the part, but it’s the hard-working

appliances that will get your pastry to puff and your crackling crisp. And, while built-in

equipment remains popular, there’s also a trend for stand-out pieces – the kind you design

a kitchen around. The way we interact with our appliances is changing fast, too, with touchscreen technology

allowing even the most complicated multifunction oven to be controlled by the tap of a finger. ‘Today’s

kitchen has to fit into our increasingly complex, integrated and multifaceted lifestyles,’ says Mark Elmore,

head of industrial design at Fisher & Paykel. ‘Not only must it look good, it has to make us look good, too.’

thanks to jamie, hugh, nigel and nigella, and the phenomenal success of shows like Masterchef, cooking is something to get excited about again. Admittedly, the professionals make it look easy – and a far cry from the reality of most family dinner times – but, thanks to improved technology and a better understanding of the home cook’s needs, the latest ovens and hobs offer greater freedom. New functions include hi-tech timers that prevent a pan from

bubbling over, steam injection to keep meats moist and vegetables firm, and programs that practically cook complex dishes for you. Even luxury gadgets, such as sous-vide systems – usually reserved for the smartest of restaurants – are now available for the home.

While eye-catching range cookers and extractors can still provide a wonderful centrepiece to the kitchen, modern built-in ovens in eye-popping shades are also enjoying their moment in the spotlight.
