November 2013 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell The Battle of Britain raged throughout the summer and fall of 1940 as the German Luftwaffe air force sought unsuccessfully to bomb London and the rest of England to its knees in surrender during the early stages of World War II. After a particularly devastating night-time air-raid, the all-clear signal was given, and local bobbies and res- cue units began to make their way through billowing smoke and piles of ruin to look for survivors. Hearing a noise beneath a collapsed apart- ment building, they pulled from the rubble a bedraggled, middle-aged woman, bruised and scratched but alive. Dusting her off, they put her on a stretcher, and, concerned about other possible survivors, asked her, “Do you have a husband, mum?” “Aye,” she said, “I do. He’s in Africa, fighting Rommel.” Then under her breath, she muttered, “The bloody coward!” At the close of World War II, econ- omist John Kenneth Galbraith had the opportunity to debrief Albert Speer, the only senior Nazi official to acknowl- edge guilt and remorse over German atrocities. “How did you come to realize the Germans were losing the war?” Gal- braith asked. Speer smiled and replied, “Because the glorious victories of the Fatherland were growing ever closer to Berlin.” What is the common thread running through both these stories? Yes, they both revolve around German forces dur- ing World War II. Yes, they both use sar- casm in a humorous way. But there is yet another idea linking them together: there is no place where we are immune from the enemy’s attack, and our homes and families are often the most vulner- able battleground. After all, what is ter- rorism and why does it work? Terrorism is the tactic of an enemy who does not fight fairly, who tries to achieve his goals by placing in danger the things we hold most sacred—our homes and families. In Matthew 2, the question of who is the rightful king leads to innocent blood be- ing spilt and homes being destroyed by evil forces intent on defeating Christ. That battle continues… – Bro.
