There are two characters in the Cass County Communication Network archive who make annual appearances — Ghostie Man in October and The Turkey, who graces our cover this month. Both were designed by Melissa Laird. As the countdown to Christmas begins, I make sure The Turkey gets to spend some time on our publications for those who say Thanksgiving always gets left out. (There’s another holiday in there, too — this year, Hanukkah starts the night before Thanksgiving.) There’s been lots of debate about how early the race to Christmas begins and I have to admit, I’ve been in the holiday spirit since I picked up the August issue of INFO and there were Christmas decorations in at least one store. The holidays are about tradition and while it may seem like

retailers are trying to push holidays on us earlier and earlier each Thanksgiving, for many people, starting their holiday shopping is one of those traditions. As a colleague pointed out yesterday, many of those who are “forced” to work on the holiday may actually be thankful for the extra income they’re getting working on a holiday. I’m not a hardcore Black Friday shopper, but last year, I braved one of the big box stores on Thanksgiving night just to see what it was like, and there’s a chance I might do the same this year, for the same reason. As soon as I send this issue of INFO to press, my mom and I are off to the Holly Bazaar at Logansport Memorial Hospital — an event we attended for the first time last year and are turning into a new tradition. And that reminds me — there won’t be a parade on Black Friday this year, but as our calendar on page 6 shows, there are plenty of holiday events where you can create new tradi-tions. Maybe it’s running in the Turkey Trot, driving through Plank Hill Park for the Twelve Mile Christmas Pageant or shopping downtown during the Downtown Christmas Open House and newly revamped Light Up Logansport celebration — there are plenty of holiday traditions to be made. And in addition, I’ve continued the Cass Network tradition of posting “Holiday Favorites” tv specials on CassCountyCalendar.com. So if you’d rather stay home and watch “Lady Gaga and The Muppets’ Holiday Spectacular” with the family on Thanksgiving night, I totally understand. Here come the holidays! Make the most of them!

Leaf season is once again upon us and Public Works Director Dan Williams is asking for the cooperation of the Logansport residents when raking leaves. If you choose to rake leaves into piles for the leaf vac to pick up, the City of Logansport asks that you follow these rules:

• DO NOT rake leaves onto the catch basins. • Loose leaves should be placed as close to the street as possible, but NOT in the street. • NO loose leaves will be picked up in the alley. • DO NOT mix limbs with the loose leaves. When limbs are mixed with leaves and the leaf vac or street sweeper pick them up, it can cause damage to the machinery which will cause delays in the leaf pick up process. • DO NOT place leaves in PLASTIC bags, they WILL NOT be picked up by the Public Works Department. Those who wish to bag their leaves may do so as long as they are placed in the brown paper biodegradable yard waste bags and placed at the normal trash pickup site. The biodegradable yard waste bags will still be picked up on your normal trash pickup day by the Public Works Depart-ment. As a rule, brush piles WILL NOT be picked up during leaf pick up season.

An Army officer, Rhodes Scholar, White House fellow, best-selling author, youth advocate, and business leader, Wes Moore is an American success story and a born leader — but he wasn’t always on the path to achievement. Raised in a single-parent household in Baltimore, Moore was drawn toward trouble as a child, enough so that his mother eventually enrolled him in a Pennsylvania military school. This single, determined choice effectively changed the course of her son’s life. It is no surprise, then, that Moore addresses this very issue of choice in his compelling keynote talks as well as in his New York Times bestseller, The Other Wes Moore. In his book, he tells the fascinating story of an-other Wes Moore — a man who shared his name and much of his person-al history. About the same age and raised in the same neighborhood by a single mother, this “other Wes Moore” arrived at a starkly different fate: he now serves a life sentence without parole on murder charges. Compelled by their similar upbringings, Wes penned his book in an effort to discover how small choices make big differences in life. Wes presents the persuasive argument that it is support systems — dedicated networks of families, mentors, teachers, friends, colleagues — that have the most profound and lasting impact on one’s life. Drawing on his experiences, he stresses the vitality of leadership in every community, from the smallest school up to the largest Fortune 500 corporation. High school students are invited to a free convocation at the Kokomo Event & Conference Center on Friday, Jan. 24 to hear Wes speak about his inspiring story and the transformative power of education. That evening, Wes will be the featured speaker at Ivy Tech Kokomo’s “Doing the Dream 2014” banquet honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The dinner will be open to Ivy Tech students, faculty, staff and the community. For more information contact Dr. Leo Studach at 574-753-5101, ext. 2209 or [email protected].

Last month, Cass County Solid Waste Management director Bob Ehle reported that a number of electronic items had been dumped at the rolloff recyling bins. This is against city ordinace and could result in a $2,500 fine. Here are some tips to remember as you recycle: • Rolloff recycling bins are located at the Cass County 4-H Fairgrounds, at Pioneer Elementary in Royal Center, behind the Walton Christian Church, at the Wastewater plant in Galveston and the the junction of County Roads 350S and 50 E.• Each one of the bins clearly indicates what is acceptable: paper, card-board, plastics, aluminum, tin along with glass jars and cans. • Cass County Solid Waste Management District collects electronics from area residents five days a week, by appointment by calling (574) 732-9253. • The tire collection effort will continue in April.• The Cass County Solid Waste Management will host a community elec-tronics recycling and Christmas Tree collection event on January 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at Spencer Park.
