Sherry Ford,
Mills County Extension Program Coordinator
In4mation for your month… Dear 4-H Family,
Congratulations to all of Mills County’s 4-H’ers and volunteers! Thank you to everyone who nominated 4-H’ers, attended the Awards Program, and supported our youth throughout the year. We are fortunate to have outstanding youth and volunteers in the Mills County 4-H program! Thank you to Youth Committee members and to the community award interviewers for dedicating so much time to the selection process. The interviewing process alone required the time and dedication of 27 adults. Sponsors of the awards are also greatly appreciated. (Award recipients, please remember to write your thank you’s!)

National 4-H Week Photo Winners Wow! I had some great response from some 4-Hers who wore their club shirts to school on October 8th. I got some great pictures! These members will receive a Mills County 4-H t-shirt as a thank you for showing off their 4-H style at school!

Re-Enrollments & Annual Dues Enrollment into 4honline seems to be going quite well. We are about 1/3 done as of October 25h. Seems right inline to be completed by November 15th. Remember, you have far less paperwork due to the Extension office- but it still needs to be turned in with your $27. If you wait to get your money turned in after November 15th, it will be $32. The enrollment is complete only after we have it all done. Clubs- please be thinking about what workshop
your club wants to offer to the county this year. We would love to have one each month! Even if we would have a day of great small workshops it would be wonderful! If you have an idea, let Stephanie know and we will try to get it together! It’s great to be doing the pie making right before Thanksgiving! Thanks a lot to Loyal Lassies for the instruction! Hopefully your fundraising will go great as well! November 23rd at Malvern Community Building.
WINNERS NATIONAL 4-H WEEK
ENROLLMENTS DUE NOVEMBER 15
Now is the time to register for joining the Hippology & Quiz Bowl teams for the upcoming Iowa State Horse Jamboree. Instructors will be Holly Vinton, Suzie Sefcovic and Denise Arbogast. This is such a great opportunity to learn and grow in equestrian knowledge and it’s been very successful in the past! Mills County has had numerous teams compete and even qualify for Nationals.
4-H’ers can participate in a variety of events that focus on horses. You do not have to own a horse to participate in these events. If you are interested in learning more about this, registering to participate, or want to be on the top of the list, call the Mills County Extension office today at 624-8616. Practices are normally twice a week and begin November 9th at 10:30 am at Extension office and Mondays in Glenwood 6:30pm, location may vary.

In today's world, food safety is one of animal
producers' biggest responsibilities. With over
15,000 Iowa 4-H'ers enrolled in livestock
projects, about 17 million pounds of meat is
produced each year. The goal of this program
is to help youth and their parents better
understand what they can do to produce the
safest food possible.
Mark your calendars! All Livestock project
members must attend training class or take the test. Class is December 30th from 5-8pm. RSVP your attendance 624-8616. It is also a meeting with Superintendents of fair. If you are planning to test, it will be done from 9-12 on the following dates: December 23, 26, 27 & January 2, 3 7- 9 Graders can take Intermediate Test
10-12 Graders can take Senior Test
We are also looking for anyone who would be interested in sharing their talent for a workshop. Maybe you have the best cookie recipe ever, you do welding, take great photos or love to scrapbook, maybe you can tell a great story or even fish. Please share your talent. These can be at your place or ours!
Mills County 4H has a strong past, a successful present and a promising future
ahead. Thanks to our volunteers! If interested in working as a volunteer, contact Stephanie at 624-8616 or email at [email protected]
Bubble Gum Art
Give each participant a piece of bubble gum to chew, a
toothpick and an index card.
Allow them 10 minutes to chew the gum, place gum on
index card and then design something on index card using
only the toothpick as a tool - no hands.
Each person takes a turn going around the circle showing off
their art. The others try to guess what the gum sculpture is. The
person with the best and most creative design, as determined
by the peer group is the winner.
If you have quite a few players you can have several categories
of winners, like “Most ingenious,” “Most Creative,” “Best
resemblance of leader,” etc.
