2013 changes for Medicare suppleMent plans hdf, f+, K, and l The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced the 2013 deductible for Medicare Supplement Plans HDF and F+ and the out-of-pocket limits for K and L.

• Annual deductible Plans HDF and F+: $2,110

• Annual out-of-pocket expense limits for Plans K and L: $4,800 and $2,400 respectively

As of press time, Medicare has not released the 2013 Part A deductible, hospital daily copayments, skilled nursing facility copayment, Part B monthly premium, or Part B annual deductible.

iMportant change for ua agents!Effective Nov. 1, 2012, United American will accept new Lifestyle Single Premium Deferred Annuity (USDPA02) production only from Agents who have sold at least an equivalent number of UA ProCare Medicare Supplement policies. Policies written prior to Nov. 1, 2012, must be received in the Home Office by Nov. 8, 2012. This restriction does not apply to the Reserve Fund Annuity (RFA).

Agents who fail to comply with this requirement will be subject to contract termination. Contact Agency Service at 1-800-925-7355 or e-mail [email protected] with questions.

attn: all agentsEffective Nov. 1, 2012, United American’s Single Premium Annuity (UFPDA02, FPA802) and First United American’s Flexible Premium Deferred Annuity (NYFPDA02) changed lifetime maximum limits from $1,000,000 to $100,000. This change is for new business only. Annuities purchased prior to Nov. 1, 2012, are not affected. The maximum annual limit of $20,000 per annuitant, per policy, does not change.

As a reminder, First United American Agents may only sell First UA annuities if they are also selling First UA’s Medicare Supplement insurance policies. First United American cannot accept new annuity production from Agents who have not also sold at least an equivalent amount of First UA Medicare Supplement policies.

Grab your board and head to the beach because the BIG wave of Seniors is rollin’ in!

The Medicare Advantage Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) for 2012 is well underway, and I’m excited about the potential it has now and in the future. According to a July report by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), federal payments to Medicare Advantage Plans will reduce by approximately $156 BILLION over the next 10 years. The CBO also states Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollments will drop from 13.9 million currently to only 9.1 million by 2019. That’s close to 5 million Seniors who will seek alternative coverage in the next few years.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released data that revealed the nonrenewal of more than 6,056 MA plans and almost 5,976 new MA plan combinations. Most members of nonrenewed plans are offered a replacement plan by their current insurer, but there are 393,819 MA plan members not being offered a replacement plan. Those 393,819 Seniors impacted by nonrenewed plans are looking for new coverage … a 36 percent increase over the number of Seniors this time last year. They need help, and you can offer it to them with a quality Medicare Supplement from UA or First UA.

Medicare Advantage disenrollments provide us with tremendous opportunity to broaden our customer base, but Medicare Advantage is only part of it. With 10,000 individuals becoming Medicare-eligible every day in the United States according to Pew Research, our country is truly in the midst of a ‘Senior Tsunami’. Wave after wave of Medicare-eligible Seniors are looking for supplemental coverage that is affordable and will help eliminate deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. It's your job to provide them with a quality Medicare Supplement that suits their needs and budget.

Every time I read articles related to Medicare Advantage and the thousands of MA plans available, being dropped, or added, I appreciate even more the tremendous simplicity of Medicare Supplements:

y There are only 11 Medicare Supplement plans from which a Senior can choose, including the high deductible Plan F (HDF and F+ in New York).

y All Medicare Supplement plans offer the same benefits, no matter which company sells them.

y Medicare Supplement plans are guaranteed renewable as long as premiums are paid on time.

y Seniors can choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. There are generally no networks.

y Depending on the Medicare Supplement plan selected, a Senior may have no deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance about which to be concerned.

Most Seniors have worked hard all their lives. If there is anything you can do as individual Agents or we can do as a Company to make their retirement years more comfortable, let’s pledge to do it. Medicare— and healthcare in general—is such a loaded issue right now, we need to assure Seniors that no matter what changes the federal government makes regarding Medicare, we are there for them.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving once again, I thank each of you for your loyalty and dedication in bringing UA and First UA products to your customers. I know you always have a choice, and I appreciate that so many of you choose UA and First UA year after year. Have a wonderful holiday season …and a fantastic fourth quarter!

Medicare Advantage Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2012

Medicare Advantage Annual Disenrollment Period Jan 1. – Feb. 14, 2013

What Applicants NeedUA and First UA require applicants who disenroll from an MA plan during one of the above time periods and apply for a Med-Supp plan to submit ONE of the following with the application:

1. Copy of applicant’s MA plan disenrollment notice* — OR — 2. Copy of signed letter applicant sent to her MA plan requesting disenrollment — OR —3. Statement signed by applicant that she requested disenrollment from her MA plan, indicating how

request was made — whether contacting the MA organization by phone, over the Internet, or calling 1-800-MEDICARE.

Documents must be dated and include name of the Medicare Advantage insurer from which applicant disenrolled and MA plan termination date. After Feb. 14, 2013, an applicant can submit ONLY a copy of applicant’s MA plan disenrollment notice.

Application Completion for MA Disenrollees1. Fully complete the Med-Supp application and include a copy of

applicant’s Medicare card. 2. Provide the MA plan start date in Part II, question 3(a).3. Provide the MA plan termination date in Part III.4. Applicants involuntarily disenrolled from their MA plans must complete

Part III, Section I of the app, providing name of the MA insurer, date of termination, and reason for termination.

5. Applicants voluntarily disenrolled from their MA plans must complete Part III, Section II of the app, providing name of the MA insurer, date of termination, and reason for termination. This type of applicant must also answer questions I and 2.

6. Complete Replacement Form REPMSM (NYREPMSM and NYU-1366 R11 in New York) by marking ‘Disenrollment from a Medicare Advantage Plan’ and providing a brief explanation of the reason for disenrolling.

*An applicant’s MA plan disenrollment or termination notice is required if the applicant applies for a Guaranteed Issue Medicare Supplement policy. Health questions are not answered if the applicant is eligible for Guaranteed Issue. Not applicable in New York.

SHOW ME THE MONEY!Insurance Agents can earn good money (including that fantastic renewal commission), considerably higher than the median pay for all occupations and almost twice as much as for other sales and related occupations. With a median pay of $46,770 in 2010, half of all Agents earned less, but half earned more. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $25,940, and the top 10 percent earned more than $115,340.
