From the President’s Desk!

Dear Probians

I was delighted to see so many members take the opportunity to 'Dress for the Races' at our last meeting. Even though the Geelong Cup wasn’t on that day, we certainly made the day our own complete with an exciting 'Phantom Call' prepared from the last 20 winners of the race. My special thanks to Terry Hynes who arranged for this CD to be produced and for organising the Sweeps that took place. He was ably

assisted by Wally Douglas and Ken Taylor. Thanks guys – well done!

Thanks must also go to Barb Ingwersen for arranging the Dine-Out to the Little River Hotel. 50 members and friends were in attendance which was an excellent turn-out.

At our next meeting, we are required to vote on the proposed Amendments to the Standard Probus Club Constitution dated February 2008. With this newsletter, is an additional page detailing these proposed Amendments. Please take some time to consider them as voting will take place on Wednesday 21 November. Only members are entitled to vote on these amendments.

As previously advised, our Christmas Lunch will be held at Capri Receptions on 12 December commencing at 12 noon until 3pm. The cost is $30/member and $35/non-member. A 2 course lunch will be provided with drinks at bar prices. I encourage you to wear your dancing shoes as we have 'Band on the Run' providing the music. Names and payment are required at our November meeting. Please advise Lesley Wallis if you have any special dietary requirements. Anyone needing transport please contact Val on 5282-3663.

Our next 'Out & About' will take place on Friday 7 December which should be an interesting walk with a guide hearing about Geelong’s history. At the conclusion, we will have morning tea at Four Points and then a ride on the Carousel. The cost is $12 per person. Names at November meeting.

In organising these functions, whether it is an 'Out & About', a Dine-Out or Trips & Tours, we need an active committee. As some committee members will not be continuing next year, I would ask you to consider assisting your club in any role that may suit, therefore enabling our club to continue providing events for our members.

Over the last two meetings, we have welcomed 4 new members those being Col & Ros Botten, Mae Craig and Stan Douglas. I look forward to seeing you at future outings. For those people on the trip to Tocumwal, we will be visiting some interesting places and attractions and hopefully enjoy some warmer weather.

Trips & Tours

Cape Otway Light Station: Thu 11 October

WITH the weather forecast looking grim for the day all thirty members and friends on the tour rugged up expecting a bleak cold and rainy day. Stopping at Lorne for morning tea by the sea was brisk but most enjoyable. On through the beautiful Otway's to Apollo Bay, Marengo, and Lavers Hill was a delight before finally turning off onto the Cape Otway Light station Road.

Our tour guide at the Station was a wealth of information about the many buildings still standing and being utilised for various activities. He also gave informative input into the shipwrecks and treacherous conditions experienced along this part of the Victorian coast. The rain came but this did not deter our climb up the many steps to the top of the lighthouse. Our senior club member, Lindsay, was determined to make it to the top and experience the beauty of this remarkable countryside and coastline from the highest possible point. Well done Lindsay.

A very enjoyable and diverse lunch was offered at the conclusion of the tour. We stopped on the return journey to experience first hand the devastation of the Manna gums by the resident Koala colony (as reported in the Addie). We do hope something can be done soon to alleviate this condition. Home to Lara approx 5.00 pm after a most enjoyable and informative day. Thank you Alan for organising another great outing.

Tarndwarncoort Homestead: Thu 29 November

TARNDWARNCOORT and Polwarth Stud at Warncoort is historically significant as the home of one of the earliest Western District families, who have been notable in the wool-growing industry, farming and community life in the Western District over several generations.

The kiosk will be open for morning tea and after the tour, a two course meal at the Winchelsea Hotel.

Transport is by members’ vehicles. Cars to depart Lara Pool at 08:00 and payment to Alan by November meeting.

VISITING places such as Wool Museum, Deakin, Johnston Park, Art Gallery etc., There will be one guide for approximately five people giving the option of splitting into groups according to fitness!

Further details at November meeting.

Revisit to Bisinella Gardens: Fri 14 December, 10:00 Bring morning tea.

Dine Out
