Christmas in the CanariesAnyone who has ever spent Christmas here in the Canary Islands may well have found the constant warm weather and favourable conditions somewhat at odds with the more traditional image of this seasonal celebration. Though it is certainly a novelty to be able to sunbathe on the day, many foreign visitors and residents find themselves at odds and unsure of that ‘Christmas feeling’ when all the imagery and greetings cards depict snow, sleighbells and let’s face it a more northerly climate; but outside the window though there is more likely to be palm trees than evergreens. Added to this,

people’s belts being tighter than ever this year, Christmas really could threaten to be a proper non starter and somewhat detatched.So the fact that two visionary entrepreneurs, Tom & Tobias Greb of the infamous Facecook restaurant, have gathered together the mighty forces of municipal government, the department of tourism, and a huge group of artists and vendors of unique crafts, cuisine and Christmas fayre, is not only admirable but to be loudly applauded. If you have any doubt whatsoever about their ability to deliver the wonder of Christmas in Playa del Inglés then get yourself down to the Yumbo as soon as possible

to marvel at the audacious scope of their project. Nightly stage shows, an ice rink, the biggest Christmas tree on the south of the island, elves and little helpers, thousands of illuminations, the bringing together of charities, community groups and people from around the world to make one single and concerted effort to ensure that this Christmas will be an absolute stonker, lasting throughout December and beyond. And of course the biggest Christmas celebrity of all will be in attendance to collect up all those last minute Christmas lists from children of all ages. He may even let you sit on his knee, if you’re nice to him.More than a thousand people

this weekend attended the opening of Gran Canaria's Winter Wonderland, the 1st Maspalomas International Market at the Yumbo Centre. The official opening started in true Christmas style with the turning on of the more than 25.000 lights on the giant eight-meter-high Christmas tree, at the heart of the marketplace. The mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Perez, officially opened the event, commenting on the importance of this initiative as a meeting of cultures and a tourist attraction for the municipality.The first day of the Market was filled with Christmas spirit from musical acts and dancers to gymnastic performances from the

International Blume Festival team. The Blume team will also be at the Market on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Among the huge array of musical and dance activity were exhibitions of typical Canary islands folklore.Attendees were treated to a preview of the Winter Wonderland show, a spectacular Christmas production with professional singers, dancers and acrobats of many nationalities. The premiere of this show will take place next Thursday 29th November.Various artisan craftsmen will inhabit the 36 custom built wooden cabins, until mid January, exhibiting their products, selling unique gifts and demonstrating their skills. There are many

types of Canarian and German food, highly original Christmas decorations as well as clothes and trinkets.This dose of leisure and culture has been imported from the German tradition, where the Christmas markets have been bringing people from every corner of Europe for years. Stimulating interest in these local craftsmen this event simultaneously serves as an attraction for tourists and residents helping to celebrate Christmas in a myriad of ways.A Great Big Christmas cheer to Tom and Tobias for this mammoth undertaking, we wish you every success in the world!We look forward to seeing you all there!

Can I post pictures of my holiday with friends on social networks?Looking at the most common use of any social network, the majority of pictures and comments published are of friends and/or contacts that would not in the traditional sense belong in the public domain and may therefore escape the legal limits set forth in article 18.1 of the Constitution and the Organic Law 1/82, May 5; which deals specifically with a person’s right to have both their personal and family privacy and reputation honoured and protected under the law.

One of the most common points of confusion among internet users is the obtaining of consent to post photographs of third parties. The Supreme Court provides that “consent should not be general, but should be about image acquisition and the basis of the same in a given environment." This essentially means that just because someone consents to pose for a photo

with a friend, it does not mean that they have given consent for it to be published wherever anyone pleases.

On the other hand, to determine if there is an infringement of the rights of privacy we would perhaps have to refer to the limitations provided for "social practices". In other words, we should examine the conduct of the individual concerned in relation to the use of social networking. From this point of view, assessing the level of interference would be partly de-pendant on the degree of privacy maintained by the individuals in question and a comparison of the difference between the social network users on the basis of how much active and participatory behaviour they engaged in compared to those who otherwise maintain a passive position or do not even have an open profile.It could come down to a judgement based on whether the information published without specific consent departed greatly from the individual’s normal practices within the social network.

Under Data Protection legislationWould a user with a big list of contacts be committing a Data Protection offence by having and uploading a picture of a friend taken during a holiday? In the event that

specific consent had not been obtained from the friend, it could certainly be deemed to have contravened Data Protection legislation.

The AEPD (Spanish Agency for Data Protection) has established, through several resolutions, that “the notion is inconceivable that consent has been granted for the publication of a photograph of a person, when they have only agreed to allow it to be taken and not specifically agreed to its publication in the media.” In this sense it has recently been confirmed by the National Court on May 18, 2012 which agreed the penalty imposed by the AEPD.As we can see in the use of third-party images there are various exceptions and limits that define the laws which provide individual liberties against the fundamental rights of others, and as always in law it depends on the particu-lars of the specific case.

It is, however, most striking that most people believe that their relationship with social networks fall outside the law and forget that it is not permitted under Spanish law to impose on anyone’s right to privacy even if they seem to passively support the disclosure of data, photographs of their personal information.

That led to an epic walk up the mountain with 7 people walking through the night to Make a Wish in Soria. Two of them then doubled the distance wlking

to the top of the mountain of Gran Canaria to be greeted by 40 cancer survivors to take a magnificent inspirational pho-tograph showing our solidarity with the Canarian Breast Can-cer Association ACCM.Various people then got involved with fundraisers of their own the outstanding leading lights of which were Kim's Bar, Playa del Ingles and The Sportsman at the Europa Center in Puerto Rico raising almost 1000€ between them.Then the Drag Queens of Sparkles Showbar, at the

Yumbo Centre, famed for their philanthropy and various fundraising activites, decided they were not to be out done and so booked extraordi-nary X-factor singer Sammi Brookes to fly over for their Breast Cancer Awareness Day event, supported by none other than the extraordinary Richard Rossetti leading The Three Tenors operatic extravaganza. On that one night alone they too exceeded the 2300€ mark to make a combined total well in excess of 5000€ raised. Amazing!

The final official event of the campaign took place courtesy of Tony's Place in Tauro, where more than 1000€ was acheived in an afternoon. Waxing the

editor was a little too popular! With various smaller efforts going on across the south and some collections still to come in we can safely say that

we expect the final total to exceed €7,000. A gargantuan sum of money which will help the ACCM to continue their vital work.The ACCM Canarian Breast Cancer association will use this money to provide support and information to those who are affected by the disease including the often overlooked partners and families of the vicitms.The provide counselling and psychotherapuetic care help-ing women to come to terms with issues like body image and to get them back on the road to recovery once they managed to beat the disease. The Conservatory Government

Despite the seriousness of the current recession, I have been amused and irritated by the constant references to the relaxation of rules for the building of conserva-tories in the UK. Presumably the rules were originally introduced for a good reason and it seems a little unwise to many people to suddenly abandon them. It is as if suddenly allowing a huge conserva-tory to be built in the back garden of a semi in Hud-dersfield, without planning permis-sion, will trans-form the nation’s economy. Now, I know it is easy to be cynical at such times, and I like conservatories as much as the next person, but maybe the emphasis upon conservatories may give the wrong idea about priorities to the struggling masses? Just a thought.

We don't have the conservatory prob-lem in the Canary Islands and much of Spain. If we are fortunate, our homes have a roof terrace to sit on, dry wash-ing on, plant a few tubs, or maybe, if it is large enough, to have a barbe-cue. It is often amusing to watch the newly arrived expat, when faced with a glorious roof terrace, to almost im-mediately have it covered with glazed roof panels! I can see that it will provide an additional room, as well as being a lovely garden room to sit in on the occasional cool, windy day, but such home improvements tend to ignore the intense heat that we enjoy for much of the year. What originally seemed an excellent idea in provid-ing additional covered space, quickly turns into a nightmare of searing heat, which becomes an oven if entering the room for more than half a minute.

Modifications are then made to the offending roof panels, ranging from shading, or expensive blinds, painting or covering the outside of the glass panels with reflective paint, installing electric opening or sliding roof panels, covering it with a solid roof, or remov-ing the complete installation. How Canarian builders must snigger when they receive their next order from a

well-intentioned expat to create a sunroom! Maybe the Conservatory Govern-ment should consider this possibility when devel-oping recession busting policies; it would suddenly create huge additional demand for building work across the nation.

On a more serious note, Canarian and Spanish families traditionally look after the elderly members of their families. Unlike the UK, there are few private residential homes in the country, other than those run by holy orders, which may not be everyone’s

idea of hav-ing a good time in old age. It is therefore a Canarian’s first prior-ity, when moving into a new home with a terrace or balcony, to immedi-ately build a solid roof

and turn it into a bedroom for Granny, with or without planning permission. As a result, some of the structures look rather strange and I feel for all the Grannies on the island when there is excessive wind or heavy rain. Gran-ny, in turn, often will look after the kids, Mum and Dad can go out to work with no childcare concerns, and so all the family benefits from this system of in-house Granny care.

So my advice to the Conservatory Government and the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK, for what it is worth, is to allow the building of everything anywhere, with little or no planning permission, to create as many homes in as many nooks and crannies as possible, especially for the nation’s Grannies. This will create jobs for builders, solve the Granny housing crisis, reduce the cost of care for Gran-nies, provide additional childcare, and allow all Mums and Dads to go out to work. As a bonus, it will provide ad-ditional work for insurance companies and lawyers when dealing with insur-ance claims for collapsed roofs, as well as compensation for infringement of light and privacy claims from the folks next door. The nation’s economy will boom and it will be the end of the recession. Only then will the UK have a true Conservatory Government.

COMO: ¿As, how or like?

As in English the same word can mean more than one thing in Spanish. So ‘como’ can mean AS or LIKE: como tú, trabajo como profesora (like you, I work as a teach-er). It´s also the present tense ‘yo’ form of the verb COMER, to eat, e,g: no como carne (I don´t eat meat, lit: I no eat meat) and if it has an accent, it means HOW: ¿Cómo estás? (how are you?)

¿Cómo o Perdón?

¿Cómo? As a one-word question also means ‘Sorry?’ (as in: I didn´t catch that). However, to apologise we can say perdón (similar to ‘par-don’) or ‘lo siento’ (LIT: ‘I feel it’). However, ‘excuse me’ is disculpa (informal) or disculpe (formal).

¿Que or qué?

With an accent on, this word means WHAT: ¿Qué pasa? What´s up/what´s the matter? (LIT: what passes?) You´ll also hear ¿Qué pasó? (what hap-pened?). However, ‘que’ without the accent either means ‘that’ or ‘than’ as a useful little link-word: creo que es simpático (I think THAT he´s nice); el sur es más turístico que el norte (the south is more touristy THAN the north). Other words that sound the same but are written with/with-out an accent to demonstrate a difference in meaning, are sí, and si. With an accent it means YES while without, it means IF: ¿Te gustaría salir? Sí, si quieres. (Would you like to go out? Yes, if you want).

¿TENER or ESTAR?

Often we use ‘to be’ (ESTAR) while the Spanish use ‘to have’ (TENER):

I´m hot: tengo calor (I have heat, NOT estoy caliente)

I´m not 40, I HAVE 40 years: tengo 40 años

I´m not lucky, I HAVE luck: tengo suerte (OR estoy afortunado/a: I´m fortunate)

I´m in a hurry: tengo prisa (I have speed)

I´m right: tengo razón (‘I have reason’) but you ARE wrong: estás equivocado/a [eh-STASS eh-kee-boh-KAH-doh]

I´m hungry/thirsty: tengo hambre/sed (I have hunger/thirst)

I´m not scared, I HAVE fear: tengo miedo (OR estoy asustado/a: I´m scared)

…or HACER?

You HAVE heat: tienes calor, the weather MAKES heat: hace calor, but coffee IS hot: está caliente.

For example: hace buen tiempo (‘it makes good weather’); hace sol/hace calor/hace frio/hace viento – it makes sun, heat, cold, wind. But it´s fine to say that THINGS are hot: la arena está caliente (the sand IS hot). However, while we have a party, the Span-ish MAKE a party: hacemos una fiesta este sábado (‘we make a party this Saturday’).

I´m working or I work?

For actions happening in the near future, we use the present continuous (ING-form), while they stick with the present simple.

I´m going out/leaving tomorrow: salgo mañana or I´m working tonight: trabajo esta noche (LIT: I work this night)

Add ‘de’ to prepositions of place or time

You only need to do this if you continue the phrase: la farmacia está cerca (the chem-ist is close) BUT está cerca DE mi casa (it´s close to my house). Similarly: quiero salir después (I want to go out after) but quiero salir después DE la clase (after the class)

Back to front: adjective AFTER noun

We don´t say the ex-pensive car but the car expensive: el coche caro. Similarly, we don´t drink red wine but wine tinted: vino tinto. Remember Casablanca? Not only a great film but where the US president lives: the White House (or house white, as they say in Span-ish). See lessons 13 and 14 for more on adjectives.

‘For the purpose of’ = paraWhen we say ‘I came to see you’, we mean in order to see you. If talking about our purpose we need to add PARA before the full verb in Spanish: vine para ver/te (I came ‘for’ to see

you); voy al intercambio de idiomas para practicar mi español (I go to the language exchange to practice my Spanish)

Las Camelias has been established for many years and is well advertised in Playa del Ingles as a feast and ideal for everyone. I must admit the first few times that you go, it is exciting, and there is a huge array of different dishes, some are excellent, and others not so good. The layout and food choice have been virtually unchanged for 10 years!

The location of this buffet is slightly unusual as you are below a set of apartments, with you looking out on their swimming pool, or on the other side a dingy car park. When you arrive, the feel of the res-taurant is very similar to a school dining hall, with rows of tables and chairs with no real atmosphere.

There is plenty of choice, and for those with a huge appetite, this can be the ideal place for a budget meal. The starters include salads, soups, breads, cold meats, tuna and cold tapas, as with all buffets it is tempting to pile your plate high and never leave enough for the main course. However, you need to as the main selection is plentiful and will ensure that you leave full.

The main buffet selection includes Canarian stews, paella, fries, pizzas, chicken wings, and various vegetables. You can also go to the grill, where one of the chefs will cook your fresh meat or fish for you to accompany your other dishes. There is a selection of pre bought desserts, fruits, ice creams and yoghurts if you feel there is a small gap left.

The waiters are friendly enough, no real interaction other than when they take your drinks order, and clear the mountain of plates from your table. They do politely ask that you do not take food that you do not intend to eat, which is a fair comment, however, children’s eyes are often bigger than bellies.

This buffet is perfect if you are unsure of where to go for something to eat, have a large group that you have to cater for, or simply want to see what all the fuss is about. The rows and rows of food trays can be off putting, and some are left for some time, but you either love or hate buffets. The price is rea-sonable, at 9,95€ per adult, and children under 11 being 5,95€, drinks are slightly more expensive, but you leave feeling full, however, not inspired.

As soon as enter Garbo's Unforgettable venue you can be sure you are in for a real treat, unlike anything else on offer in Maspalomas. This state-of-the-art fully functioning dinner theatre is unique in Gran Canaria and a cut above almost anything else on offer on the south of the island. Manager Gary Breslin's opulent sense of showmanship is palpable from the moment he greets you at the door, and assigns you one of his bright-eyed table staff who will be your host for the evening, to their final bow and curtain call and the near unanimous, nightly standing ovations enjoyed by a cast of what must be the hardest working and most talented waiters anywhere in the Canaries. The all inclusive food is basic but soon forgotton, as each perform-er builds the audience, culminating in a second-half jam packed with group numbers galore and a lightshow par excellence.

Every single front of house waiter is in fact one of the highly entertaining stars of the show, and that this is Garbo's 16th suc-cessful season is testament to how very well received the idea has been here in Gran Canaria. An idea, I am told, that has also met with great success in Nordic countries like Sweden over the last 30 years. Garbo's packs a touch of class and good old fashioned well rehearsed, beautifully lit and choreographed shows into a full night of family entertainment where you are sure to be up and dancing and singing along to their renditions of well known show tunes and, in their latest offering, some of the greatest hits of what they have termed the 'Divos' and Divas of the 20th century. This is a night to remember, and a must-see whether you are visiting on holiday or simply looking for something fun to do for a night out over the Christmas period. Well worth a visit and a welcome departure from some of the more risqué shows to be found elsewhere. Garbo's proves that there is no substitute for quality showmanship.

For someone who has not ridden a bicycle for almost twenty years, an invitation to go for a couple hours bike riding up the mountains didn't sound that inviting at all. After making a few insecure mumbling sounds, I was told that not only would it be a guided tour, but that it would be on some new hi-tech electronic bicycles, with the promise that I would even be able to keep up with professional cyclists, and that the technology would ensure that I could go up any hills with very little effort. I must say at this point I got little bit excited thinking about all those cyclists you see around the island with their fancy tight outfits, zooming up the mountains like a wind.On the day of the excursion I found myself standing nervously in the Cyclo Canarias shop, in CC Sonnenland, in t-shirt, shorts, sneakers and sunglasses very pleased to discover that no more specialist equipment than that was required. The helpful staff fitted me for a bike helmet and than gave me a personal introduction to the bike I would be using, running me through where the battery was, gentle use of the breaks and the many, many gears the bike had to offer. I was concerned that it might be too much for me to handle, as the bicycle I used to ride had only 3 gears and my first few shaky peddles made the bike feel a bit complicated; but once

we got onto the long asphalt road I really started to enjoy the experience within only a few minutes.We began our tour on very easy terrain, cycling in a line along the road, past the Aqualand water park, to the beautiful Ayagaures valley nearby, and started gently making our way higher and higher led by our experienced guide Andreas, who constantly moved between the stronger cyclists and the less experienced to make sure nobody felt left out or left behind. He cheerfully encouraged the novices to have a little play with the bike’s electric controls which meant that the whole group stayed pretty much together regardless of our various levels of ability. With just a little assistance from the very easy to use electric motors, going uphill towards Ayagaures turned out to be rather enjoyable. At about 12km

we stopped for refreshments at the lovely little Bar La Cuevita, after which I experienced the thrill of riding a bike almost effortlessly up the rather steep looking climb to a peak overlooking the valley and had plenty of time to take in the amazing views. As well as peering down at the Palmitos park dolphins from high above, I got to see the mountains from an angle very different from the usual car or bus window experience and truly had a great time being outdoors and doing something that I haven't done for years. And as for down the Monte León hill as fast as I dared ... well that was just pure FUN, FUN, FUN! Though at first a little preoccupied about this tour, after just few minutes, I felt real excitement and the trip flew by. I had such a good time feeling the speed, wind and the sunshine on my face. Andreas, our guide was full of energy and high spirits for biking, very professional and a lot of fun. It turned out I’d had no need whatsoever to worry about not having biked for years or if I was fit enough, and I would recommend this excursion to absolutely anyone; in fact I already have family visiting, of various ages and abilities, who are all going to try for themselves while they are here. So if you’d like a really great outdoors experience, and might enjoy reliving a thrill many of us haven’t had since childhood, I really cannot commend Cyclo Canarias highly enough. With the latest, most advanced, German engineered, battery assisted hire bikes on the island they have opened up cycling here to nearly all age groups and fitness levels. This is one excursion that everyone can enjoy together and is recommended to children from the ages of 9 to 99!

While the global economic stranglehold tightens its ghastly grip on Gran Canaria’s trembling throat…Stop! We all know the crisis is here. No need for grim details. While the European leaders puzzle what to do, the Mogán Council (Iltre. Ayuntamiento de Mogán) granted the Community Charity Flea Market in Arguineguín for another year to TARA. (See w.w.w. TheCanaryNews.com The Canary News, Ed.66: “Mogán Partners the People.”)

The community flea market selling second-hand products, previously owned, or original self-made art and crafts is held every Saturday morning (07.30Hr – 14.00 Hr) at Plaza de Negra in Arguineguín. Registered charities and government subsidized persons are free. Cost for other community members is €3.00 per stall.

On behalf of all who participate weekly at the second-hand market, TARA effusively thanks Doña Carmen Delia, Mogán’s Concejala, for her deliberation to renew the flea market that helps our community in many ways.

Some people sell at the flea market to augment their income, to spring clean the home, or create closet space. For many others, however, it is their sole means of making a livelihood in these hard times. In cases where insolvent people have nothing to sell, TARA and other charities

provide them used goods. Special gratitude goes

to volunteers Leonor Garrido and Mari Carmen Garrido who orchestrate the TARA flea market every Saturday morning from its predawn beginning to the end. The rest of the week, these extraordinary sisters distribute food with the Mogán Food Project for destitute families and through the Asociación Desempleados Bregando Esperanza, their own founded organisation, they assist jobless people to maintain hope and find employment.

Hats off to the many outstanding people in stalls at the flea market who, like Mari Carmen and Leonor, dedicate energy and time to make our community a better place for humans and animals. These selfless volunteers show up early every Saturday morning at 07:30 and set out their used merchandise to raise funds for their chosen charities.

The first year of the TARA Community Flea Market in Plaza de Negra helped participating charities to assist hundreds of struggling people in need of financial support, drug and social rehabilitation, reintegration into society, employment, a bed to sleep in at night with a roof overhead, and basic food to survive.

Animals benefited too. Hundreds of abandoned and abused dogs and cats found new, loving homes. Hundreds

more were medically treated and neutered by veterinarians to slow the rising levels of feline/canine over-population for the limited island homes available. Uncontrolled reproduction is the prime cause of animal abandonment.

There’s wholesome magic in the collective spirit of volunteerism that permeates the Plaza de Negra market place with inspiration and well-being. It comes when people extend beyond themselves to work together for the greater community good. Sometimes it feels as though there were no economic crisis--least not on Saturday mornings.

Thank you to the sellers who supported the flea market by continuous attendance even through the slow times. They established the foundation of friendliness and determination to make it work.

Thank you to all the smiling shoppers who visit the flea market time and time again, sometimes bringing along a beloved adopted rescue dog or two. They also contributed to the friendly ambiance of the market place and made it work.

And finally, a hearty BRAVA! to Mari Carmen Wood and Helen Gay Oulton, who without fanfare or fuss continue to make the improbable probable.

One day when in school I saw a new boy from my class walking home carrying a mountain of books. His name

was James. “Why would anyone right-minded bring home all his books on a Friday? He must re-ally be a swot” I thought. I had quite a weekend of dress up and partying planned so I just shrugged and walked on. Suddenly I saw a gang of boys run-ning towards him. They knocked his books out of his arms and tripped him up. His glasses went fly-ing, and ended up in the mud about ten feet away.

He looked up at me and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him as he crawled around feeling for his glasses. A lone tear trickled down his cheek.

I picked up his glasses and handed them to him. 'Those kids are a pain’, I said ‘they need to get a life!’

James simply said ‘Thanks'... then slowly his tears were replaced by a beatific smile. It was one of those heart-felt smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. He named the street... just two away from mine. We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

He turned out to be pretty nice. I asked him if he would like to come to the park with my friends. He said ‘OK’.We spent all weekend together and the more I got to know him, the more I liked him.

Monday morning came, and there was James with that huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, 'Boy, you are really into building some seri-ous muscles carrying this pile everyday!’

He just laughed and handed me half of them!

Over the next four years, James and I became best friends.

He was always top of the class; I teased him about being a swot.

We talked about going to college. James decided on London and I was going to Leeds .I knew that the miles between us would never be a problem... that we would always remain friends. By this time he was one of those people who attracted others like a magnet wherever he went. All the girls loved him....sometimes I was dead jealous!

James was asked to address the school on the last day of term; our final speech day. I was glad it wasn't me! When the day came I saw that he was nervous so I gave him a punch on the arm and said, 'Hey mate, don’t worry - you'll be fine!'

He looked at me with his own special look (the really grateful one) and smiled that certain smile.

'Thanks,' he said.

On the platform James cleared his throat, and began;

“Today is a time to say a huge thank you to those who helped us all make it, especially through the tough years. Our parents and teachers of course, but mostly our friends.

I am here to tell all of you that being a real friend to someone is the best gift you can ever give them.'

I just stared at James in disbelief as he told of the first day he and I met...and how he had planned to kill himself over that very weekend. He spoke of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mother wouldn't have to do it when he’d gone, and was carrying all his books home for the last time.

He looked hard at me and flashed me once again that special grateful smile. 'Thankfully, I was res-cued,’ he said ‘My friend saved me from doing anything silly.'

An audible gasp went up as this handsome popu-lar boy told the whole school about his weakest moment. I saw his parents looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth and meaning.

James continued ‘I believe that God gives all of us divine appointments...opportunities to impact each other’s lives in times of need. We must never underestimate the power of our actions...even the simple ones. I am living proof that one seemingly small gesture can change a person's life forever. And it has taught me to reach out the hand of friendship to others, to touch their hearts...and to let them touch mine’ he concluded.

James went on to become a skilful surgeon. His own life saved... he now spends it saving the lives of others.

Perhaps there is someone out there who has tripped up – someone floundering for their glasses in the sea of mud called life. Someone just waiting, metaphorically speaking, for somebody to help them carry their books, or to invite them to play football, or simply put an ‘arm around the shoulder’.

May we each find opportunities to stretch out the hand of true friendship; seeking nothing in return other than being on the receiving end of that spe-cial look of gratitude and that certain smile.

The vows are promises you will be making to one another for the rest of your life, so they shouldn’t be underestimated in importance and meaning.All wedding celebrants have their own standard wedding ceremony structure and vows, however if you are considering writing your own to add that more personalized touch to the ceremony, then here are 10 tips to help you along.

1. Get AuthorizationEnsure your ceremony celebrant will allow you to personalize vows. Some celebrants and houses of worship may require you to recite a specific set of traditional vows. If they do allow you to write your own, then always remember to send a copy on to the celebrant so they can give you the all clear.

2. Prepare. Give yourself plenty of time to pre-pare your vows. Writing them the day before your wedding may be stressful and give you writers block.

3. Together or separately?You can either write your vows to-gether or separately. If you write them together, you can choose to write the same vows for you both to say to one another, or they can be completely different.If you write them separately, agree on whether you will run them pass one another beforehand or whether it will be a surprise on the day. If you’re opting for the latter, my ad-vice is to agree on an average length of time and tone that suits you both. Although just one sentence can sometimes have a greater meaning than 10 sentences, you want to en-sure that one doesn’t overpower the

other. I would recommend for it to be no longer than 1 minute. You could always send them on to a chosen family member or friend to look over beforehand to ensure they both stick to the format you have both agreed upon.

4. StructureOne of the basic rules of writing is to create an outline and structure to the passage. You could start by high-lighting your fiancés attributes, then following by talking about the great relationship bond you have, pause to quote a passage from a writer or poet, then finish it off with the prom-ises you are making to one another.

5.Steal IdeasIf you’re not great at writing or ex-pressing yourself, stealing passages from great writers or poets or even movie scenes that depict how you feel can add the same amount of individuality and romance when said with heartfelt meaning. Researching vows from different re-ligions may also give you inspiration.

6. Setting the ToneWhile some people can choose their vows to be lighthearted and even humorous, as a wedding planner my advice to you is to always keep it heartfelt and meaning full. Your vows should always acknowledge the seriousness of the commitment you're about to make to one another.

7. ContentIn order to get the answers to which promises you want to make and keep to one another, sit down togeth-er and ask yourself and each other the following questions: Why did you decide to get married? What are your expectations from each other in your relationship? How do you want your future to be together? What

does marriage mean to you? Are there any hard times you’ve had to overcome and how did you support one another through them? How do you envisage handling any chal-lenges that may lie ahead? What are you looking forward to the most about being married to your fiancé? What do you want to accomplish in your future together?

8. Added extrasAsk yourself, what it is about your fiancé that made you want to marry them. What qualities do you most respect and admire in them? What inspires you about them? When the moment was that you first started to fall in love with them and how has your life changed since you met them?

9. Remember the occasionYou’ve invited a lot of people to come and witness you publicly making this bond together. Even if you choose to keep the vows lighthearted, limit the amount of cryptic jokes and humor that only you and your partner might understand and relate to. Don't make your vows so personal that they're cryptic -- or even embar-rassing!

10. Practice Out Loud Written text can sound total different when said out load. Practicing out loud ensures you can inject your per-sonality into what you’re saying and project it with meaning and sincerity. It also weeds out any tongue twist-ing sentences. Writing Your own Wedding Vows

We were predicted a storm, the weathermen stressed, the government announced we were on red alert, and I was advised to get my car out. The rain came, a bit of wind, but nothing amazing, and still the car sat in the drive. The rain came heavier, and the storm arrived, the schools began to evacuate, which is normal here, and still the car sat in the drive.

At this point I had no real concern, yes it was raining heavily, yes the barranco was wet, but not filling at all. I was telephoned by a friend in the village, who said "get your car out, or you will be stuck" and I mocked and said "its only a bit of rain, I will do it in a minute".....maybe I should have moved faster, as it was then we heard this almighty rumble, and there it was...water....the speed, and velocity of it was incredible, and once I had got over the amazing site, it dawned on me oh SH... my car is still sat in the drive!

My smugness turned to panic as I realised I had no way of getting my son from school, oh, or getting him across our new river. A few frantic phone calls and Mrs S stepped up and offered to get him from school. Problem one solved, now onto how the hell does he cross the river safely Unfortunately I hadn't thought to pack a boat in his school bag that morning!

seemed there is after all an escape route from our finca, through the next two fincas, and then to the road. Off we went on operation rescue child. Package confirmed said Mrs S referring to my child, pointing out to him that he may need to change out of his werewolf slippers

to make the journey home..delay over he

was on route. I must admit the

support, calls and offers of help made me feel humble, so thanks guys you all know who you are.

S spent at least 5 minutes mocking, me

saying "didnt you get the car out..." rookie mistake..yeah whatever! He enjoyed the walk home with lots of ooooo's and wow's as the water rushed past us taking everything in its path....and just as I reached the drive, I realised I didn't have a drive, oh carp, the water was rising, through the gates.

The ducks loved it, and kept peering over to see if they could leap in, thankfully they didn't. Every other animal took cover, and stayed indoors. The rain finally stopped and we just stood walking around in amazement at the speed at which the water come. I felt stupid that I hadn't listened, and that maybe I don't know everything! My husband couldn't get to work, which was not amusing. The water levels dropped and the storm passed...next time I might just listen to what people have to say...or buy a boat!

I San Agustíns första rondell, i nordlig rikt-ning, står nu ett konst-verk som är sju meter högt och som mest tre meter brett. Statyn ska symbolisera en träkil, som den 15 oktober 1962 slogs ner i marken för att utstaka byg-gnadsplanerna för Gran Canarias nya turistan-läggningar.

Borgmästaren i San Bartolome de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Perez, påminde om vilken milstolpe vi passerat, men att hädanefter måste alla krafter riktas mot att modernisera och förnya Maspalomas så att turistnäringen främjas och framtiden säkras.

Det var stor uppslut-ning denna 50-års dag, med representanter från näringsliv, regering och kommunen, och mediebevakningen var omfattande. På bilden syns konstnären Pepe Dámaso hjälpa greve de la Vega Grande, Alejandro del Castillo y Bravo de Laguna med att knyta upp banden vid den ceremoniella avtäckningen.

Länge har en mörk bild av Spanien målats upp i massmedia. Naturligt-vis finns det fog i att återge den utomordentligt svåra ekonomiska situation som landet befunnit sig i sedan länge och kämpar för att ta sig ur. Men beskrivningarna av krisens nuvarande omfattning tycks snarare följa modeströmn-ingar än drivas av en ambition att hitta fakta. Samtidigt som nordisk press konsekvent fortsätter med domedagsprofetior har till exempel Financial Times, med hänvisning till en undersökning gjord av Fitch Ratings, angett att USA:s tio största penningmarknadsfonder åter har börjat investera i Europa. Även insättningar på spanska bankkonton har ökat för första gången på ett halvår.

Kanariska Nyheter har träffat Tore, mäklare på Gran Canaria Houses, som bevittnat hur norska journali-

ster förstärkt bilden av krisens om-fattning på Gran Canaria, genom att otillbörligt vinkla reportagen med ofördelaktiga bilder tagna på andra ställen än de i texten omnämnda. Han möter regelbundet spekulanter som inte törs köpa sig en lägenhet, eftersom det sägs vara så osäkert i Spanien. ”Man måste skilja på Spaniens problem och förutsättnin-garna som gäller för en norsk bostadsköpare”, säger han. ”Ta Loma Dos i Arguineguín exempelvis. Här ägs majoriteten av bostäderna av norrmän. I allmänhet är fas-tigheterna betalda eller i annat fall finansierade med lån tagna i Norge. Detta bestånd påverkas ju inte direkt av arbetslöshet eller minskad köpkraft i Spanien”, fortsätter han.

På vårt påstående att priserna har gått ner de senaste åren, även på Gran Canaria, håller han motvilligt med. ”Läget är det viktigaste”, slår

han fast. Därefter är det kvaliteten på bostaden som är avgörande för priset och på senare tid också att folk i ökad utsträckning eftertraktar bostäder i ett plan, förklarar han.

Den 15 oktober gästade Joaquín Achúcarro Las Palmas. In-för en i det närmaste fullsatt salong framförde han verk av Brahms, Schumann, Debussy och Ravel. Joaquín Achúcarro föddes 1932 i Bilbao, Spanien. Han inspir-erades tidigt av sina föräldrar att spela piano och debuterade som 13-åring. Men det var först med segern i en internatio-nell pianotävling i Liverpool 1959 som karriären inleddes. Efter det har Joaquín Achúcarro givit konserter i 60 länder. Spelat med fler än 200 olika orkestrar under ledning av mer än 350 dirigenter. Under sitt liv har han fått många internationella priser och erhållit två av Spaniens mest prestigefyllda utmärkelser inom konst; 1992 Premio Nacional de Música och fyra år senare mottog han ur Kung Juan Carlos hand, Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes. Joaquín Achúcarro är känd för att frambringa vackra, sjun-gande klanger. Även denna kväll visade han prov på sin uto-mordentliga tekniska skicklighet. Men det var ändå först med Claude Debussy och La plus que lente följt av Tres Preludios som en påtaglig spelmässig förändring skedde. Då och dä-refter med Maurice Ravels Gaspard de la nuit, ljöd ur flygeln den sonora musik som fascinerat så många lyssnare världen över. Den 26 november kommer en annan pianist på besök till Teatro Pérez Galdós. Rafal Blechacz, internationellt mycket uppmärksammad, som denna gång har Bach, Beethoven, Debussy och Chopin på repertoaren.

Tidigare har författarna Birger och Anita Løvland gett ut boken Vandra på Kanarieöarna. Som specialister på vandringsguider har de med sin senaste bok, inriktat sig enbart på Gran Canaria. Boken innehåller 34 väl beskrivna vandringsturer på någon timme upp till heldagsturer spridda över hela ön. Dessa är grupperade i vädersträcken, sydväst, väst, nordväst, nordost och centrala delen av ön.

Som sig bör är den drygt 300-sidiga boken fylld med information och tips för vandraren, men i slutet på boken ges även förslag på ett antal trevliga bilturer.

Boken är rikt illustrerad och försedd med talrika kartor och tydliga vägbeskrivningar. Dessutom finns ett kort avsnitt fakta om Gran Canaria avseende geografi, klimat, flora och vegetationszoner. Under helgen mellan den 9 och 11 november firar Viejas Glorias sitt 20 års jubileum. I parken i San Fernando samlas alla föreningar, klubbar och företagare som

har med motorcyklar att göra. Ett 50-tal utställare visar upp gamla antika klenoder blandat med nya modeller som för första gången visas för allmänheten. Kläder, gamla och nya reservdelar, specialister på förkromning, inget saknades i detta eldorado för motorcykelentusiaster.

Kor i San Agustin

I Chicago år 1999 ställdes 300 kor ut på stadens gator. De var tillverkade av glasfiber och i naturlig

storlek. Olika konstnärer målade sedan djuren på så sätt att mönster och färger skulle associera till de företag som sponsrade utställningen. Året efter var det dags för New York som invaderades av 500 till 1000 kor.

Under årens lopp har denna konst- och reklamform dykt upp i 175 länder. Enligt världens mest prestigefyllda branschtidning inom marknadsföring, Advertising Age, ansåg de detta vara en av de tio bästa reklamkampanjerna i hela världen under 2001.I år har företeelsen kommit till Gran Canaria och det är Animal Fantasy som ligger bakom detta projekt med ett 40-tal kor.

Horden har nyligen kommit till San Agustín, efter att ha kunnat ses runt om på ön. Bland sponsorerna återfinns exempelvis Aqualand Maspalomas, Palmitos Park, Frigo, SEAT och Sioux City.

Sist i ledet med att fira att vi var först

Klockan 17 idag inleddes ceremonin vid det nya minnesmärket för svenskarnas tidiga intresse för Gran Canaria, som dateras till den 15 oktober 1962.

Honorärkonsul Ann Kristin Ekstrand, beskrev i sitt tal svenskarnas betydelse för öns utveckling som turistort.

På samma tema fortsatte Sveriges ambassadör i Spanien Cecilia Julin. I en vidare exposé gick hon från vikingatid till 60-tal och nämnde också General Francos ogillande av de svenska flickornas minimala klädsel, som kunde leda till moraliskt förfall. I en personlig kommentar gav hon till känna att hon fram till nu, tillhörde en av de ytterst få svenskar som aldrig varit på Gran Canaria.

Nya affärsgatan i San Fernando

Sedan den 13 augusti har Avenida de Gáldar, I San Fernando, till viss del varit

avstängd. Som första etapp i det stora projektet kallat Zona Comercial Abierta en San Fernando, börjar slutet på arbetet skönjas. Mycket återstår dock att färdigställa på sträckan mellan Eurospar och Avenida de Tirajana, trots att slutdatum var planerat till sista dagen i oktober.

Upprustningen av triangeln mellan gatorna Avenida de Gáldarna Partera Leonorita, Alcal Marcial Franco och Avenida de Tirajana har till syfte att främja affärsvillkoren för de närmare 1000 små och medelstora familjeföretagen. Trafiken kommer att ledas bort i stor utsträckning och shoppinggator och grönområden ska återge San Fernando dess tidigare roll som ett betydande affärsområde.

Euron har legat stabilt gentemot dollarn en längre tid och kursen fredagen den 16 november var 1,2756. Den svenska kronan, som tidigare i år förutspåddes en kraftig förstärkning mot euron, har inte riktigt kunnat infria förväntningarna.

Nivån vid 8,6 tycks vara svår att bryta igenom. Norska kronan ligger och pendlar vid 7,40. En ur ett inhemskt perspektiv motiverad räntehöjning, bedöms vara en faktor som talar för fortsatt förstärkning.

Det har varit omfattande demonstrationer såväl i Spanien som på Gran Ca-naria. Nedskärningar och budgetåtstramningar slår hårt mot befolkningen, som tydligt visar sitt missnöje. Arbetslösheten är fortsatt hög och speciellt drab-bade är ungdomar, där upp till varannan går utan arbete. Men, det finns ett

annat perspektiv också. Spanien har förbättrat sin ställning på den finansiella marknaden och kan ta upp lån till betydligt lägre ränta, än för endast en kort tid sedan. Börsen i Madrid ångar på och euron ligger på en stadig kurs gentemot omvärldsvalutorna. Den amerikanska ekonomi TV-kanalen CNBC har flyttat

fokus vad gäller nyhets-flödet. Grekland nämns knappt längre och Spanien förekommer allt glesare i de världsomspännande reportagen. Nu är det USA:s statsskuld som är det ena huvudnumret. På en digital display visas hur skulden ökar. Dollar för dollar och ner till sista cent. Sedan gör man samma show av att visa

tiden fram till Fiscal cliff, vad som på svenska blivit bud-getstupet. På motsvarande sätt tickar tiden på den stora tavlan ner obönhörligt, an-talet dagar, timmar, minuter och sekunder som återstår fram till årsskiftet. Underhål-lande- visst, men ger också en skrämmande bild av hur strukturella problem görs till dagsländor.

Sedan förra numret har det hänt en hel del. Det har inkommit många förfrågningar om Kanariska Nyheter kan hjälpa till i de mest olikartade ärenden. Det började med att en kvinna undrade om vi kände någon som ville köpa en oljemålning av konstnären Leif Kander. Tyvärr gjorde jag inte det, men rekommenderade henne att sätta in en annons.

Sedan var det någon, även detta en kvinna, som ville sälja sitt hus i Puerto Rico. Hon hade hört att tidningen försöker ställa upp så gott det går och missnöjd som hon var med den mäklare hon tagit kontakt med, vände hon sig till oss. Efter det ringde en kanarier och sökte en nattklubbsdirektör. Det var också efterfrågan på musiker och sån-gare. En mamma till en flicka som blivit sjuk, önskade hjälp med att reda ut problemen

hon hade i relationen mellan sjukhus och försäkringsbolag. Jag uppmanade henne att skriva ner lite fakta för att se vad vi kan göra. Ett meddelande från en initiativtagare till att bilda en svensk förening med syfte att driva en anläggning för trygghetsboende i San Agustín, är ännu ett exempel ur brevskörden. Detta är ett blygsamt sätt från tidningens sida att hjälpa till, men kanske kan det gagna någon. Ni som fastnar för något av det ovanstående – skriv till mig och jag lovar att vidarebefordra informationen.

Vad gäller mitt förslag att sätta in en annons var det inte för att avfärda brevskrivaren eller övertala henne till en dyr annonskampanj, som naturligtvis inte står i proportion till tavlans värde. Nej, tanken var att för en billig peng sprida in-formationen till alla tidningsläsare från Las Palmas till Mogán. Madridbörsen klarar sig mycket bra i jämförelse med Stockholm och Oslo. Återhämtningen sedan i somras är kraftig och i höst har den haft en väl så bra avkastningen som de båda andra marknadsplatserna.På Gran Canaria finns ett bolag som är listat i Madrid. Det heter Montebalito A.S. Grundat 1972, med säte i Las Palmas, och som har två verksamhetsgrenar; utveckling av förnyelsebar energi och fastighetsförvaltning och - byggnation.Bolaget har omfattande projekt

i Spanien för utvinnande av elektricitet med solcellsteknik. Fastighetsbeståndet finns både i Spanien och ett flertal europeiska länder, däribland Tyskland och Frankrike. Kursutvecklingen har varit minst sagt skakig. I slutet på 2007 stod aktien i13 €. Idag får man betala några cent mer än bottennoteringens 0,50 €. Det innebär en nedgång på 96 % på 5 år. Men med en fastighetsmarknad som kanske nått botten och med ständigt ökade krav på energi, är det kanske en aktie att hålla ögonen på?

Fredagen den 2 november lade ett fartyg till i Las Palmas hamn, för några dagars uppehåll på sin seglats jorden runt. Inte direkt någon ovanlig händelse i en av världens mest frekventerade hamnar, om det inte vore för att besättningen till stor del består av funktionshindrade personer.

Segelfartyget Lord Nelson lämnade den 21 oktober, på förmiddagen klockan 11.50, hemmahamnen Southampton . Det 43 meter långa och 9 meter breda fartyget hade med sina 50 besättningsmän påbörjat sin långa resa och första etapp till Brasilien och Rio de Janeiro.

Det finns mycken symbolik och historik bakom såväl avresetid som fartygsnamn. När man kastade loss i England var det Trafalgar

Day. Dagen har fått sitt namn efter det berömda sjöslaget utanför Spaniens kust, ca 4 landmil sydost om Cádiz. När förtöjningstrossarna halades in var detvid samma tidpunkt som viceamiral Nelson 1805 signalerade, till den egna flottan, budskapet att England förväntar sig att var man gör sin plikt. Två timmar senare stod britterna som segrare över Spanien med dess allierade Frankrike. Namnet Lord Nelson knyter inte bara an till en av världens mest berömda sjöfarare, utan påminner också alla om viljans och målmedvetenhetens betydelse. Nelson förlorade synen på ena ögat 1794 vid belägringen av Korsika. På sommaren 1797 fick han order om att anfalla Teneriffa och blev vid tillfället så svårt sårad i höger armbåge att

man tvingades amputera armen. Enögd och enarmad – men en segrare.

Grunden till den nuvarande expeditionen lades i slutet av 1970-talet. En lärare och tillika sjöman, vid namn Christopher Rudd, hade en idé om att kunna ge funktionshindrade barn samma undervisning och erfarenheter som fullt arbetsföra studenter. Genom mötet med Tony Hicklin, läkare och specialist inom rehabilitering ledde samarbetet vidare till att välgörenhetsorganisationen Jubilee Sailing Trust bildades 1978.

Ett antal båtar byggdes men det var inte förrän Lord Nelson konstruerades som tillräcklig anpassning och erforderlig utrustning kommit på plats, för att möjliggöra

långsegling. Bygget påbörjades 1984 och pågick i två år, Sedan jungfruturen i oktober 1986 har över 24.000 personer deltagit i en resa. Av dessa har 10.000 varit fysiskt funktionshindrade och nästan 5.000 rullstolsburna. Lord Nelson är den första segelbåten i sitt slag som seglar jorden runt.

Lord Nelson kommer att vara till sjöss i mer än två år. 50.000 sjömil planeras att tillryggaläggas och mer än 30 länder ska besökas på de sju kontinenterna. Efter att skeppet lämnat Gran Canaria blir det ett kort stopp på Kap Verde. Sedan väntar Atlanten med destination Rio de Janeiro. För övrigt finns ombord den fackla som ska tända elden vid de Paralympiska spelen 2016 som arrangeras av staden.

Den 15 november öppnar en internationell konstutställning kallad Feria Canarias Nordica. Den pågår till den 30 november i Expomeloneras Kongress Center och är öppet mellan kl 11.00 och 19.00. Många konstformer visas upp. Målningar, skulpturer, installationer och fotografier. Temat för utställningen är de gamla grundelementen Vatten, Jord, Luft och Eld. Bland deltagarna presenteras Rafael Hierro, Monique Hoffman, Gabriel Ortuño, Mayete Vieta och Santiago González, som de mest namnkunniga.
