For Americans November is theseason of Thanksgiving. It is a

special time, different from whatit is in other countries. It is anoccasion to celebrate our patrio-tism; implied also in that celebra-tion is a heritage of religioussignificance.

George Washington, for ex-ample, in the darkest days of theRevolutionary War, has been re-ported to be on his knees in prayer.

Our money, likewise, carriesthe inscription, “In God We Trust.”In that famous document, “TheDeclaration of Independence,” wecan read, “All men are createdequal; they are endowed by theircreator with certain inalienablerights.”

In 1777 the Second ContinentalCongress declared, “It is the in-dispensable duty of all men toadore the superintending Provi-dence of Almighty God.” A year

later Benjamin Franklin addressedthe Continental Congress, saying,“Gentlemen, I have lived a longtime and am convinced God gov-erns the affairs of men.”

Thomas Jefferson would con-fess that God had given freedom tothe human mind. And, in 1861 Abra-ham Lincoln, before leavingSpringfield, Illinois said, “With-out the assistance of the Divinebeing, I cannot succeed. With thatassurance I cannot fail.”

When Dwight Eisenhower waspresident, he said, “Our form ofgovernment has no sense unless itis founded in a deeply religiousfaith.” Likewise, did John F.Kennedy say, “God’s work musttruly be our own.”

Such is the religious and patri-otic heritage that we celebrate onThanksgiving. Therefore, let us beever grateful.

For some time now, it has beenthe custom to put outside rent-

als of our restaurant and banquetfacilities on the official Sahib cal-endar as just “outside rental!” Ofcourse this is done to help anyoneplanning their events, to know whenour facilities are already booked.

This is most helpful, but thereis another reason to know exactlywho or what has booked our facili-ties. From a marketing standpoint,it makes us all aware of what kindof organizations are interested inrenting our rooms and equipmentand banquet kitchen. It might re-mind us who we should be encour-aging to consider using what weoffer. If you have never reviewedour Web page on renting Sahib’sservices, I encourage you to go to:<http://sahibshrine.org/renthall.htm>.You might also find it interestingto review the References link nearthe bottom of the page, to see someof the organizations that have

regularly used Sahib Shriners fa-cilities in the past (this list hasn’tbeen updated in quite some time,so there have been many otherkinds of clients renting from usbesides these.)

It was brought up in the Unit/Club Head Meeting about eventsjust appearing as “outside rental”and the Divan and the restaurantmanager agreed that putting spe-cifics on the calendar would helpmembers understand who is rent-ing and what they are doing here.Perhaps some of our membersmight even desire to attend someof these events, if they knew whatthey were. For instance, this montha large bird show will be here. Wefrequently have weddings and com-pany awards banquets.

There is no doubt in my mind, that we must rent our facilities a lotmore than we do, to keep this largebuilding available to our members, rentals help pay our bills!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

November brings us the Salute to Veterans and Thanksgiving.

It has been an interesting and enjoyable year. Yet the year is coming towardsits end and the future looks bright. Reflecting back on the events of this yearbrings back good memories that will last forever. I thank the nobility forallowing me to serve you.

New Imperial regulations allow candidates for office to distribute theirqualifications and backgrounds without really campaigning. Those interestedin serving Sahib Shrine and its nobility should avail themselves of thisopportunity to put forth their candidacy.

Our Shrine elections will be held December 5. Every noble should attend thisvery important meeting and cast his ballot. There are openings for Trusteesof the Capital Assets, Additions and Replacement Trust Fund and OperationsTrust Fund. Also needed are Finance Advisory Committee members. Noblesinterested in serving their Shrine temple should make themselves known tothe Divan and nobility. We also elect our Representatives to Imperial Shrine.

Happy Thanksgiving and Thank You to those who have served our country.

Yours in the Faith,

Charles M. Levan, 33°, Potentate

Recorder’s notesby Oscar Cloutier, [email protected]

The December annual meeting will be here verysoon. As you are aware, at this meeting we will be

voting for temple officers for 2013. This is a veryimportant election because you will be electing thoseofficers that will govern your temple. At this time,we know that there will be two positions opening. Ias your Recorder will not be a candidate for 2013.After spending the last ten years very involved atSahib from being Membership chairman, Divan mem-ber, Potentate and currently Recorder, I feel it’stime to “Get on my horse and ride out into thewilderness”. I have had very rewarding moments inthese ten years, made many friends and had fun. Thatis what the Shrine is all about. I will co-chair the 2013Circus with P.P. Dale LaBell. Therefore, the positionof Recorder will be open.

This position requires that the candidate hasexcellent computer skills. It is a very demandingposition that requires that the candidate is prepared

to make a serious commitment. The smooth function-ing of the temple is in the hands of the Recorder, whorepresents the nobility and Divan as their agent. TheRecorder must be many sided. A historian whoknows the temple background; a business man whowill keep the temple’s accounts in balance; an ad-ministrator who is keeper of the temple’s recordsand its property; a councilor on Imperial law, templepolicies and the relationship with other temples; anarbitrator when necessary; and above all, “a primemover” to keep the temple functioning.

Another very important position that will be open-ing is that of Oriental Guide. We have the require-ments for Oriental Guide printed on another pagefor your perusal.

We need to fill these positions with dedicatednobles who are willing and able to commit their timeand effort to the future of Sahib temple.

Nobles, ladies, and friends, to start this article Ifirst want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanks-

giving. As Shriners, we have so much to be thankfulfor. We are in much better shape than those we help. The things we do to help the burned and disabledchildren is a privilege and not a chore. I personallylook forward to the projects Lady Wendy and I takeon to raise money for this great cause. When thisarticle and November Reporter are in your hands, wewill be visiting Ismailia Shriners to observe one oftheir successful fundraisers. This will be a greattime to mingle with the Shriners of Ismailia, in factone of their Past Potentates, Illustrious Sir TomRockey, called me to offer Wendy and I a place to

stay! It’s a great feeling when Shriners, hundreds orthousands of miles away can work together for thesame reason.

I just got back from the 2012 International Hill-billy convention in Charleston South Carolina. Wehad one dozen of our Sahib Hillbillies in attendance(see photo on front cover) and fun was had by all. Ofcourse, after the great job that the Hillbillies ofClan #78 out of Sahib did hosting the 2011 conven-tion here in Sarasota, this was just another conven-tion. I hate to say that, but Hillbillies from all overNorth America still talk about the great time every-one had at Sahib and want to know when we will host

Our Fall Ceremonial is not far off; November 30and December 1. Did you get your candidate?

Just replace yourself and we can double our member-ship if we all tried. Ask your Masonic friends to jointhe Best Shrine in All Shrinedom. It’s never toolate! Your membership committee has been out visit-ing the lodges and spreading the word on how greatour Shrine is and what we do.

November 9: 7:00 p.m. Sahib Tribute to Our Veter-ans, which will be held in the main hall. This isalways a great event. You don’t want to miss it.

November 22: Thanksgiving Day Grand Buffet, mainhall. Chef Bob has many good foods planned for yourenjoyment. Everyone have a great Thanksgiving.

November 25: Sahib Memorial Service, main hallwith many good speakers and our Sahib Band.

There are many holiday parades coming up, sowatch the weekly bulletins on Fridays or check withParade Marshal Ron Enger.

Our “Back to the 50’s” held on September 30 wentover well, with many people asking if we were goingto do it again in the spring. The banana splits and hotfudge sundries went over big, thanks to the pastPotentates, it was my pleasure to serve with PastPotentate Oscar Cloutier on the committee for the50’s party/picnic. We both thank those who came andhelped with food prep and serving.

Remember “Bingo” is our best fundraiser andthey need help to continue, so if you haven’t beenthere yet let Bingo Chairman Don Vos, PP, know andhe’ll have a job for you.

Shriners Hospitals for Children: A History of Innovation and Excellence in Burn Care

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is noted worldwide as a leader in pediatric burn care. Since opening our three pediatric burn hospitals in the 1960s, our health care system has been at the forefront of innovative programs and treatment techniques that have both dramatically improved the survival rate for children with severe burns and enhanced their quality of life.

Here is a brief timeline of the development of our burn care program:

1960s: In response to the growing awareness of a need for pediatric burn care, research and education, the governing body of the Shriners organization passed a resolution at the Imperial Session in 1962 to build and operate hospitals specializing in pediatric burn care. The first one opened in 1966 in Galveston, Texas, followed by those in Cincinnati and Boston two years later. The establishment of these hospitals helped raise awareness of burn injuries and appropriate care throughout the medical community.

1970s: Tremendous improvements in survival rates were made, particularly because of innovative research in excision, grafting, and intravenous feeding. In addition, pressure garments that helped lessen scarring were developed. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati pioneered skin banking – a precursor to future methods of tissue, bone and skin procurement. In addition Shriners Hospitals for Children worked with the United States Fire Administration and Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify burn prevention programs for schools and fire departments. And finally, our Boston hospital began the first school re-entry program for patients.

1980s: Outpatient clinics were added at the three burn hospitals to provide continued care after patients are discharged. Also, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children discovered that early surgical excision and grafting reduces infections, shortens hospital stays and improves cosmetic outcomes for patients. Finally, Burn Awareness Week, a national education campaign, was

created in an effort to raise public awareness and reduce the number of burn injuries in children.

1990s: Services were expanded at our burn hospitals. Care was made available for non-burn conditions such as port wine stains, congenital ear deformities and other complex wound and skin conditions. In addition, new programs were set up to help burn patients with psychological and social issues, including transitioning back to school and community. And, in 1997, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California opened in Sacramento to serve children with orthopaedic conditions, burns and spinal cord injuries. The hospital has become the busiest pediatric burn center in the western U.S.

2000 - 2010s: Shriners Hospitals for Children continues to demonstrate and be recognized for their leadership in burn care. The hospitals in Boston and Cincinnati received the Press Ganey Summit Award for extraordinary patient satisfaction. All four burn hospitals have leaders who have served as president of the American Burn Association and three of the hospitals have hosted or co-hosted the World Burn Congress, an annual event of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors that brings together approximately 800 burn survivors and their families, caregivers, burn care professionals and firefighters to share experiences and support one another.

In the years and decades to come, Shriners Hospitals for Children expects to continue its leadership in pediatric burn care, and its long-standing legacy of improving the lives of children.

Erratum, Latin for “an error in writing or print-ing.” That’s exactly what happened in last

month’s Motor Corps column. However, even thoughour Reporter Editor Gary Schweinshaupt called it a“low level error,” I’ll try and right the error in thismonth’s column.

Our net income for seven weeks of Bikerbillydinners should have been $5,436. That would aver-age about $777 per week. The figures represent animprovement over our 2011 results.

The other error was in calculating the days be-tween our Spaghetti Dinner and Thanksgiving. Thespaghetti dinner is November 4; Thanksgiving isNovember 22. That would mean 18 days between thetwo events. Therefore, that’s my mea culpa (Latin for

“my mistake.”) Read on and I’ll try and do better thismonth.

Our annual fall ride to Murphy, North Carolinaconflicted with the Sun Fiesta Parade in Venice onOctober 20. Nevertheless, we plan to participate inthe Venice Holiday Parade on November 24, theCeremonial parade in the morning and the SarasotaHoliday Parade in the evening on December 1, andthe Poinsettia parade in North Port on December 8.

By the time you read the November issue of TheReporter, our fall Spaghetti Dinner will be days away.We hope to see a lot of our fellow Shriners, familiesand friends on Sunday, November 4 between 3:30 -6:30pm. It’s all the spaghetti you can eat, our famous

Howdy, y’all! Here’s the latest from “Behind theOuthouse”.

Well, this time last year I wrote about how wellwe did the Hillbilly Convention, how time flies.

As I said last month here comes parade season.Everyone always loves to see us Hillbillies paradin! Our next parade is Venice Holiday Parade on Satur-day, November 24. Step-off 7:00 p.m.

Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving. You cantell you ate too much on Thanksgiving when you haveto let your bathrobe out!

Sickness and distress: Noble Bill Shipley still hasback issues, Lady Marilyn Gatrell is recovering froma recent medical procedure and your scribe is pre-paring for gall bladder surgery. However, on a lighternote, our ‘Mixmaster’ president read a hilarious spoofobituary on the passing of the 71-year-old PillsburyDoughboy. He had “died of a yeast infection andtrauma complications from repeated pokes in thebelly, was buried in a lightly greased coffin and thegrave site was piled high with flours.” – etc. etc. Youhave to read it to appreciate all such homophones!See Bill for a copy.

As we go to press, no responses yet to our Octoberquiz, so we’ll give our readers another month for a tryat it:

In an interview after his tenure, what U.S. Su-preme Court Justice appointed by Richard Nixon, described the NRA-sponsored new interpretation ofthe Second Amendment as: “one of the greatest piecesof fraud – I repeat the word fraud – on the Americanpublic by special-interest groups that I have everseen in my lifetime.”

The first non-club member to identify this Octo-ber/November Notable at the above email address orphone (941) 429-6882, wins a free Tuesday morningbreakfast for two with the North Port Shrine Club.

Greetings, President John Winters was happywith the Venice Parade Greeter turnout. Our

object is to fill the trailer every parade. The 2013 slate of officers was presented to our mem-

bers by Committee Chairman Bill Nelson at our lastGreeter meeting. A vote will be taken this month at ourmeeting. It is very important you attend this meeting! The results of the vote will be in December’s article.

John Winters expects all Greeter officers to at-tend the Unit Head meeting each month; our by-lawsstate it. Be informed.

Happy Birthday in November to John Lineweaver. The holiday season is approaching. Let us remem-

ber out ill Brothers and all ill Greeter family mem-bers in our prayers. Dave Dickerson has been movedto hospice care, please send any cards to his homeaddress. Bill Zurlo is home now. Give him a call, avisit or at least a card. Let all who are ill know theyare not forgotten.

Be a Greeter, join the Prestige Unit!

Noble John H. Brophy of North Port,(not a Legionof Honor noble) wrote a tremendous “Letter to

the Editor” article in the Sunday September 16 Engle-wood Sun Newspaper. In his article he lambasted thenewspaper for not running one picture nor writinganything about the many Sahib Shrine Units in theLabor Day Englewood Pioneer Parade. He in par-ticular picked out the newspapers staff writer andstaff photographer for their failure. Well done, NobleJohn!

November brings the LOH sponsored Birthdayand Anniversary Dinner/Dance. With the LOH andSahib Shriners now accepting American Flags that

are worn, ripped, frayed and tattered from the publicand Sahib Shriners for proper retirement, I am issu-ing this formal challenge to all who attend this affair.Whom ever brings the most American Flags to theNovember 13 affair and gives them to me in a plasticor paper bag, the LOH will on the spot provide you abottle of champagne. If a tie, we will flip a coin. Bringthem on nobles and guests!

November ushers in the holiday season with par-ties and good food. Going to the Thanksgiving DayBrunch at Sahib? Come on guys let’s pig out. Withouta doubt, I can eat $25 worth of “Carved Roast Beef”let alone everything else on this menu. See you there!

Greetings from the Mariners! We have had another busy month with a great time at the Get

Saturday morning the golfersmade their way to the club for an exciting round andlunch. The rest enjoyed the hospitality room playinggames and football while others went to town toshop. A wonderful chicken dinner with all the trim-mings was served. After dinner, three Mariners wereinducted into the Ancient Mariners, Fleet CaptainMax Misemer, Secretary “Slippery” George Cancroand “Sore Thumbs” Carroll Scribner. Only two of thethree slipped on the wet tile and went down with a

loud crash. There were no permanent injuries but alot of excitement. Fun was had by all as King Nep-tune performed the ceremony. Sunday morning ev-eryone packed up to go home but not before they atea hearty breakfast prepared by PP Dale LaBell andhis crew. A huge thank you to all who helped to makethis weekend another success.

Model Tsby Barry Hayes, Scribe

After spending part of the summer with a sickboat, I want to report “Never Again 7” is back torunning perfect. I found out why it is better to havea friend with a boat than to own your own. Yes, itcertainly is a hole in the water you pour money in. I

doubt that will ever change for me since I have had aboat or boats for many years. There are few thingsbetter than to be on the water.

Happy Boating.

Greetings nobles! Captain Mike Swatek had sevencars in the Englewood Pioneer Days Parade on

Labor Day. He said there was one breakdown beforeand one during the parade. It is our longest parade, and I’ve always felt that it is one of our most enthu-siastic parades. People seem to really enjoy the wholething. I know that it was always my favorite.

As I sit here on a balmy Sarasota morning listen-ing to a Ferrante and Teicher album on my Boseradio/cd player as I write this, I know that I havebeen blessed many times over just to live in Sarasota.

Our Blue Lodges seem to be on good footing. SahibShriners just seems to get better and better thanks tohard work of many people. I think we should beaware of our many blessings and reciprocate on adaily basis as we travel through life.

Hi and how are you? This is my second try at thismonth’s info, I forgot to save the first try and it

went out the window! I have smartened up, hope-fully!

We have been very busy with membership, whenyou read this; your committee will have presentedprograms at all Blue Lodges in our area. We arealways well-received and treated as brothers. Forthis, a big thanks to our Worshipful Masters.

As we traveled, our message has been one ofrecognition of Sahib’s roots and our great respect forour Masonic family, our reliance on our Past Mastersfor support and guidance and an orientation to themany activities that are unique to our temple. Wediscuss, of course the many units and clubs open tomembers, but our primary message is Sahib’s contri-bution to Sarasota and Manatee County’s’ childrenand families. All are aware of our parades and par-ties, but few really know of the 1600 children wecurrently sponsor at our Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren, few know of our air flights to special services,

a rare number know of our hundreds of trips toTampa by our great driver’s crew.

How effective have we been? That will be evi-denced in time. I do know that wherever we havetraveled we have opened eyes and made new friends.

Treasurer’s notesby Kenneth Shipley, [email protected]

A couple of months ago I issued a challenge to youall to estimate what the fixed costs would be to

run your temple for the first nine months of the year. These are the bills we must pay just to open thedoors. True, without opening the doors, we wouldnot have electric, water and sewer, garbage, and afew other costs, yet my intention was to highlight thebasics and not count salaries, supplies, maintenance, food and beverage, and all those expenses that arediscretionary. Here is a table of those costs:

Property taxes $ 7,848.31Property Insurance 6,549.00Electricity 45,550.84Water/Sewer 12,111.92Lawn service 11,600.00Pest control 984.30Trash/garbage 1,122.00Gas 3,917.79Telephone 5,849.68Security 302.88

This all adds up to $92,246.72 for just the first ninemonths. If you extend that out to a full year, we comeup with $122,995.62. How does that compare with thedues collected for 2012? That figure came in at$127,500. Let’s take out the Imperial and hospitalassessments and that number is actually $108,000.Not even a break-even situation. Of course, in thereal world, we have our wonderful staff, our upkeepon the building, our activities and entertainmentand a whole bunch of other expenses that I would beglad to share with any noble. That number is comingin at $396,940 for the year. By the way, the winner ofthe challenge was Charlie Hamilton. We will behaving a dinner on the Friday evening of his choice inDecember.

As you read this, I am in Africa for the month. Ireturn the day after Thanksgiving. I hope the elec-tions, the World Series, the college and professionalfootball seasons and your personal health and well-being has given you all many reasons to be thankful.I am thankful for the opportunity to have served youthis past year.

On October 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., theSahib Model T Unit helped at the Sarasota Fire

Prevention Day event held at the Fire Training Cen-ter on Beneva Road next to Sahib Shrine.

We give children rides in our Model T cars at therate of one every 5 minutes, which represents hun-dreds of rides. This drew a large group of people toour location at the event. We were then able to giveout information on our Shriners Hospitals for Chil-

dren, copies of the Sahib Shrine Reporter showingour events at Sahib temple, and we also put out aHospital Transportation Collection Container andgot a few dollars for that cause.

Considering everything, it was a very good day forboth the Fire Department and for Sahib Shrine.

The members who helped at the Fire PreventionDays were Fred Ellis, Mike Levin, Mike Swatek, JimSmith, Ron Le Vene and me.

Model T President Charles Hamiliton with one of the hundreds of children theunit gave rides to at the Sarasota .Fire Prevention Day.

I feel I am qualified for this position, as I has beeninvolved with Shrine Law, and other operations ofthe Shrine. I looks forward to working with thenobles, the help and others to make Sahib ‘A First-Rate Shrine temple.’

This story will pull on the strings ofyour heart, and will reinforce the

fact of how important it is to continue tosave those pull-tabs and what good itdoes to save them. If you have not beensaving them, then Please Start! You canbring them in to Sahib and leave themwith me or Fred Ellis. Anything we cando to help the children in the ShrinersHospitals For Children is A#1 in my book

Keepin’ Tabsfrom an article in “The Spider Web”

Every Saturday, at Spider’s Road KillGrill in the Black Widow parking

lot, you can find Jim and LaurenCiavattieri collecting the pull-tabs fromaluminum soda cans. This is a familiarsight to our regulars and most peopledon’t think twice about receiving a tab-less can of soda from the grill. But, wethought you might like to hear the storybehind it.

When Jim and Lauren’s daughter,Sandra, was born in 1974, the doctorcame into the room and said he had somebad news. Sandra was missing her leftarm up to the elbow, where some finger-like appendages were growing. TheCiavattieri’s took their baby home andstarted looking for help in dealing withSandra’s condition. They applied to theMarch of Dimes and The Jimmy Fundand were turned down by both organiza-tions. Then, the Shriners stepped in. AShriner the Ciavattieri’s knew sponsoredthem and the Shriner’s Hospitals forChildren took care of everything fromthere.

Sandra started off with what is knownas a “crazy 8” harness with a hook pros-thetic device to replace her missing hand. When she was about 7 or 8 years old, thedecision was made to surgically removethe “fingers” on her elbow as they weregrowing and beginning to get in the way.As she went through school, Sandra wasfitted with a prosthetic arm that lookedreal, right down to the fingers with

fingernails. Thesedevices had to bechanged often asshe was growing inorder to maintaina proper fit. Even-tually, Sandra wasgiven a bionic arm(to the tune of$3,000) thatworked off a nerveending in her arm.She was even ableto crush a can withthe bionic hand!

T h r o u g h o u tthis whole ordeal,the Shriner’s Hos-pitals for Children

paid for everything, until Sandra reached18 years of age. Sandra and her parentsoften had to travel to the Shriner’s hos-pital in Springfield, Massachusetts forher procedures and fittings. Their lodg-ing, the doctor’s visits, surgeries, de-vices—all expenses were paid by theShriners. Sandra has gone on to gradu-ate college and is now happily married.

It is in appreciation for all theShriners did to help their baby throughthe years that Jim and Lauren work sohard to collect the pull-tabs from alumi-num cans. The Shriners are able to takethese tabs, turn them in for the value ofthe aluminum and take that cash to pur-

chase much needed wheel chairs for thedisabled children they assist. The ques-tion that usually pops up about now is,“Why just the tabs?” Well, apparently

there is more aluminum in just the tabthan in the whole rest of the can! Whoknew?

One weekend recently, Jim andLauren received a wonderful donationas they were in their usual spot collect-ing tabs during our grill-out. Dave andBetty Soucy brought them an 18 gallontote filled with pull-tabs! Dave was in a

and always will be. Please note thatArmand Pinard, Dealer Principle, BlackWidow Harley-Davidson/Vespa/Piaggioin Port Charlotte, has not only helped incollecting these pull-tabs, but has alsomade some monetary donations throughSahib Shriners as well. Questions on Religion and Freemasonry. Can a man be a Christian and a Mason at the sametime?Perhaps the best answer is that most of us are, at leastin the United States. The ranks of Masonry have beenand are distinguished by many of the outstandingreligious leaders of America. A quick scan through thebook 10,000 Famous Freemasons, gives us these namesfrom history, among many others.

Rev. Charles T. Aikens, who served as Presidentof the Lutheran Synod of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Bishop James Freeman, the Episcopal Bishop ofWashington, D. C., who first conceived and beganconstruction of the National Cathedral.

Bishop William F. Anderson, one of the mostimportant leaders of the Methodist Church.

Rev. Lansing Burrows, Civil War Hero and Secre-tary of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Rev. James C. Baker, who created the WesleyFoundation.

William R. White, 33° who served as President ofBaylor, and Secretary of the Sunday School Board,Southern Baptist Convention and Rev. Hugh I. Evans, who served as national head of the PresbyterianChurch (to be continued.)

The Bible talks about two structures in greatdetail; the Tabernacle built by Moses in the wil-

derness (Exodus 26 and 36) and the Temple erectedby Solomon in Jerusalem (I Kings 3-12 and IIChronicles 1-10). Masonry has adopted both of thesestructures in its legend, however, the building of theTemple of Solomon seems better know among themembers of the Craft.

The word “tabernacle” means tent. The BiblicalTabernacle was built of planks covered with skins. The Jews referred to it as “mishcan” meaning adwelling place, but more commonly by “ohel” whichmeant like a tent. The Book of Exodus gives a verydetailed description of exactly how the tabernaclewas to be built. The structure was formed of linencurtains held together with loops and gold clasps, over which was a covering of goats’ hair. These cur-tains were supported by frames of acacia wood. Thetent was rectangular and always erected on an east-west bearing, with the entrance facing east. It wassurrounded by a court protected by a screen of fabricpanels supported on frames and arranged in a rect-

angle. The size of the court was 100 by 50 cubits, orabout 150 by 100 feet. The furniture and the colors forthe curtains are detailed in the Book of Exodus.

The Tabernacle appears to have been a model forKing Solomon’s Temple and, carried further, estab-lished the pattern for all Masonic lodges. While thisis a major point, it does not appear to be the mostsignificant. When the Lord spoke to Moses, directinghim to ask the people of Israel to make a free offering“And let them make a sanctuary, that I might dwellin their midst.” It was in this tent that God revealedhimself and lived among his people. This tent becamethe “Beth El,” the house of God.

So we, as Masons, see that the Tabernacle not onlyprovides the design for our lodges, but also repre-sents man’s voluntary response to the demands ofGod. So has we enter our lodge room and see the altarin the center, let us always remember the presence ofthe Ever-living, All Seeing God of all.

Please remember to attend the Reunion on No-vember 3 and 10, as well as the regular meeting onNovember 12.

325.8 Nomination.Nomination. Candidates for office and Representativemust be placed in nomination from the floor.325.11 Election Regulations.(a) Electioneering. A candidate for an elected office ina Shrine temple may print, publish and circulate duringthe year he is seeking the elected office, a résumé consist-ing of his educational background, his vocational his-tory, and his Masonic and Shrine record. Except asprovided in the prior sentence, the printing, publication, circulating or distribution of resolutions, letters, tele-grams, tickets, email or other devices, by a unit, club, noble, or group of nobles, suggesting, recommending, opposing, or containing the names of proposed candi-dates for office in the temple is prohibited.(b) Expenditures Prohibited. The expenditure ofmoney for gifts, favors, or entertainment on behalf of acandidate for elected office is prohibited.(c) Violation. For any violation of (a) or (b), the ImperialPotentate may suspend any offending noble, and he maydeclare the election of the officers void and order a newelection.(d) Notice. At least one week prior to the annual meetingor any election, the temple Recorder shall mail to eachmember a notice thereof containing this section.

Sahib temple limits each nominating speech to threeminutes. The noble who is nominating may give hisname, his position in the temple and the name of thecandidate he is proposing and the office for which thenoble is nominated This brief introduction is not part ofthe three minutes. The three minutes should includethe qualifications of the candidate, what he has done inthe temple and other Masonic bodies, his present andpast business experience, etc. No comparison may bemade with other potential candidates. Two nobles maysecond the nomination, giving their names and templepositions, but no further speech is permitted.

Some may question the limitation of time and exclusion ofseconding speeches; however, your Potentate believes thatthree minutes are sufficient if the nominating speech iscarefully prepared and read. It has been observed that insome temples where there is no limitation of time, the longspeeches and seconding are often repetitive and tend toharm the candidate despite his fine qualifications. Short, concise speeches will tell the story with authority.

OFFICIAL CALLANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTION OF OFFICERS,TRUSTEES AND FINANCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

WEDNESDAY, December 5, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.May The Best Nobles Win

IMPERIAL LAW

We are genuinely grateful that Sahib Shriners has beenfavored in past years and is currently favored with

sincere, honest, able and devoted leadership through its electedofficers. However, eternal vigilance must be wisely andthoughtfully exercised by the voting membership in order toperpetuate a high caliber of leadership.

Every noble is a good noble… but it does not necessarilyfollow that every noble is fitted to meet the rigorous de-mands imposedupon Divan offic-ers and Poten-tates.

So let’s be fair, honest and wisein the all-impor-tant matter ofelecting to officeonly men who areeminently quali-fied for the job.We all know thatwith honor comes responsibility. In addition, while there ishigh honor associated with a Divan office, the ensuing respon-sibilities entail a lot of time-consuming, energy-consumingwork.

Sahib Shriners needs and requires able leadership. Thenormal starting point of that leadership is demonstrated by

what the candidate has done previously serving in elected andappointed Shrine offices. The checklist in the center mayprove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the officeof Oriental Guide; however, no thinking man would be sonaïve or presumptuous as to believe that any one noble couldpossibly embody all the virtues, talents, and qualificationswhich are set forth in this checklist. Nevertheless, the list haspractical value…for self-evaluation by the noble whose ulti-

mate aspirationis the office ofI l l u s t r i o u sPotentat, andfor evaluation ofpotential candi-dates by the vot-ing members.

When themembers of aShrine elect anoble to the of-fice of Oriental

Guide, they are virtually starting that noble though the DivanLine on the assumption that he will prove qualified for andworthy of advancement to the high officer of Illustrious Poten-tate. Hence, it is quite evident the nomination for OrientalGuide should be based upon thorough and accurate evaluationof character, ability, interest and experience.

The candidate should have demonstrated:Leadership Possess Social GracesExecutive Ability Financially SecureBusiness Sense Energy and VitalityCommunity Standing and Influence Free to Devote Ample TimeWell-poised Capable of Building Good Public RelationsGood Health Good Habits and Moral CharacterDiplomacy Interest in the ShrineStage Presence Ability to Give and Get CooperationCompetent Organizer and Promoter Understanding beforehand with Wife and Family

Madelyn Hubbs, a 12-year-old patientambassador for Shriners Hospitals

for Children - St. Louis, had no idea ofthe surprise in store for her as she satin a restaurant with her family lastOctober.

“Do you know what I’ve been doingthe past few months on Saturdays?”asked her father, Jeff. “No,” respondedMadelyn with a puzzled expression.“Well, I was out becoming a Shriner,”said Jeff as he pulled his new red fez outfrom under the table and placed it uponhis head.

Madelyn, who is missing an arm, hasbeen a longtime patient of the St. LouisShriners Hospital. She was so excited, she crawled under the table to reach herdad and gave him “the biggest hug,” re-counted Jeff. “We’ve been helping thehospital for years,” Jeff said. “But Ithought it was time to make it official.”

What It Takes to Be a ShrinerShriners Hospitals for Children is thephilanthropy of Shriners International.Jeff thought about joining for a few years,

but with work and family obligations, heput it on the back burner. Once he madethe firm decision to become a Shriner, hebegan taking classes.

In the classes required to become aMason (a prerequisite for becoming aShriner) Jeff learned the core values ofFreemasonry. After completing thattraining, Jeff took advantage of a “Chanceto Advance” session, which included allthe activities he needed to participate into achieve the status of Master Masonand become a member of Shriners Inter-national.

Taking an Active RoleThe entire Hubbs family have been do-nating time, energy and toys to ShrinersHospitals for Children - St.Louis as longas they can remember. It seemed right tobecome a member of the fraternity, ex-plained Jeff. He is now looking forwardto taking an active role in the Moolahchapter’s many activities and fundrais-ers, along with his family.

Introducing the 2012-13 Shriners Hospitals for Children Patient Ambassadors

Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® chooses two patient ambassadors to represent the thousands of children who receive care at the health care system’s 22 facilities annually, regardless of the ability to pay. The Ambassadors will share their stories to inspire others and raise awareness of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Meet Hunter Woodhall and Jérémy Gabriel, the Athlete and the Artist, our 2012-13 Ambassadors. They were introduced after the premiere of the video which tells their stories, “Two Worlds Apart – One Place of Hope,” during the public relations presentation at the recent Imperial Session of Shriners International in Charlotte, N.C.

The Athlete:He plays basketball, football and soccer; he wrestles; he runs track, snow skis, swims and roller blades, all with two prosthetic legs.

Hunter Woodhall, 13, was born with fibular hemimelia of the left leg. The condition is a shortening or absence of one of the two bones in the calf, which may require amputation or bone-lengthening procedures to correct. In addition, his right ankle was fused.

The Woodhalls had a difficult time finding information about Hunter’s conditions. After exploring options that offered no real hope, the Woodhalls contacted Shriners Hospitals for Children.

After consulting with a team of experts at the Tampa, Fla., facility, the Woodhalls proceeded with the amputation of Hunter’s feet. After his surgery – at just 11 months old – Hunter was soon walking and running around. He hasn’t stopped since.

Later, the Woodhalls moved to Syracuse, Utah, where Hunter became a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City. Hunter is a straight A student and an accomplished athlete. The team of experts at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City has always provided options to help Hunter be able to do anything he wants to do, including fitting him with some of the first Flex-Foot Cheetah custom feet that the hospital had ever provided, as well as special liners for wrestling, in addition to his prosthetic legs for daily use.

The Artist: He has sung for both Céline Dion and the Pope; he has recorded two albums and co-authored a book. He was born deaf.

Jérémy Gabriel, 15, of Quebec City, Canada, was born prematurely with severe facial malformations and other complications requiring intensive care. Jérémy was finally diagnosed at 6 months with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. In addition to head, skull and facial deformities, children with this condition generally have absent or malformed ears, which can cause hearing loss.

Jérémy was referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada at age 5 for treatment. There, the family met Lucie Lessard, M.D., a plastic and craniofacial surgeon. Dr. Lessard suggested a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) Implant, which Jérémy received in June 2003, at age 6. After the surgery, Jérémy was fascinated with sound, and discovered he could sing. In fact, he has perfect pitch. Jérémy is scheduled for additional facial reconstructive surgery later this year, including surgery to reconstruct his cheekbones, as well as surgery on his jaw, which should improve his breathing and chewing.

Jérémy now attends a high school specializing in performing arts, where he is an excellent student. He is preparing for a career in the music business.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is proud to have been able to provide expert care to both Hunter and Jérémy, and wishes them every success in the future.

Donor Relationsby Robert L. (Bob) Rodd, Chairman

We, as nobles of Shriner’s Interna-tional who are called Shriners, are

the ones known in our fraternity as mem-bers of the greatest philanthropic orga-nization in North America; however, when we ask most people who theShriners are they say, “They are theones we see in parades in those funnyhats, known to us as Fezzes.” Or theysay, “They are the clowns or the oneswho drive those tiny cars in the parades.”They even might say that they are theones putting on or sponsoring circusesor rodeos throughout the United States

Most of them do not know that firstand foremost, that we are Masons. Mostare not aware that we, as Shriner’s have22 Shriner’s Hospitals for Childrenthroughout the United States, Canadaand Mexico. For those in this area, mostdo not even know we have one of thosehospitals nearby in Tampa.

I am sure that like myself, we, asSahib Shriners, whether full, associatemembers or our snowbird Shriners, aswell as all Shriners in the world, takeextreme pride in being able to say “I ama Shriner and we help children who needassistance with one or more of severalimportant medical problems and can saythat regardless of the patients or fami-lies ability to pay they will be treated, ifit is something we cover.

However, to do that we, as Shriner’shave to help in making this possible. There are many ways including:

Several of you are drivers who takechildren, picking them up at their homesand taking them up to the hospital, waitfor them while they get their treatment, and then drive them home. Just last year385 of these trips were made just fromour Sahib Shriners.

I know many of you assist in raisingtransportation funds when we have “Hos-pital Days” at the various businesses in

our areas. That is very important as wellas extremely helpful for our patientsand our hospitals.

Some of you in various ways assistthe hospital as a volunteer, maybe as aguide or other areas as needed.

To all of you who have or are cur-rently doing one or several of thosethings and/or are assisting in other ways,be it physically, monetarily or givingyour prayerful support, with much grati-tude we thank you.

There also are those of you that areShriners but have not been able physi-cally, or you live too far away to attendour functions, for whatever reasons, butare very proud to be called a Shriner anddo what you can for the children. I amrequesting all of you that can; share withthe Shriner’s Hospital for Children adonation, which is tax deductible.

As you may or may not realize that ofyour annual dues to Sahib only $5.00 ofthat goes to the hospital unless you spe-cifically send additional funds and di-rect them to the hospital fund.

Hopefully you can see I am thinkingout of the box. I believe that most of usShriners can and want to help more thanjust $5.00 a year which comes to just overone cent a day to assist our main philan-thropic cause.

What I am asking as the Donor Rela-tions Chairman is that you join me ingiving an additional .0114155 or just overone cent for each hour in a year which isonly $100. Please, please, please step upto the plate and become a proud partici-pant in our Plaque Program. Make yourcheck payable to: “Shriner’s Hospital forChildren” for $100 or more, if you areable and it will be most gratefully ac-cepted. In return for your donation, youwill receive a very lovely plaque that youwill be proud to display in your home oroffice for you and others to see and hope-
