2011 Pumpkin Color Tour Marysville to Clyde to Selfridge The day started out as very wet, windy and dreary. We gathered at the Big Boy Restaurant at Hall Rd and Garfield for

a quick breakfast. We left around 9:15 am in the wind and rain. By the time we had arrived at the Wills Sainte Claire

Museum in Marysville, the rain had stopped, but the wind had not. We started out with 25 people on the tour.

The Wills Sainte Claire museum houses about 10% of the total remaining Wills St. Claire auto production. Of the

12,000 cars produced for this marque, only about 70-80 survive. They were produced from 1921 – 1926. They were

luxury cars of their era. The cars were about 8 – 10 times as expensive as a Ford Model T. Aside from the cars which

were on display, there were many pictures and documents which were in display cases. The condition of the cars ranged

from pristinely restored cars to basket cases. It is a fun small museum and is one that is off the “beaten path”.

We started inside with breakfast. Then we proceeded on back roads to the Wills Sainte Claire Museum. The vehicle on

the left is the same type of roadster as on the right. One could call it a “box truck”, a “woody”, or a “basket case”.

We left the museum and headed northwest to Clyde Township for lunch at the Dorsey House. There has been a

restaurant at this site since 1847. The new building, while not as nostalgic as the original one, was very nice. Our tour

participants had a very nice lunch there. Thanks to Steve Mahac for suggesting this restaurant.

After lunch we headed back on a route that took us through Fort Gratiot, Port Huron and the communities south

along Gratiot Blvd. We exited at 20 Mile (Hall Rd) and went East to the Selfridge Air Museum. It is also a small facility, as

air museums go, but large enough to handle over 25 aircraft and a small building with various war pictures, uniforms and

engine displays. It was sunny and very windy. The planes were tugging at their moorings and appeared to want to jump

up in the air… They were rockin’ and rollin’.

Since we have not had a killing frost yet, there were many trees that had not started their fall colors. The colors we did

see were interesting in that there were not many reds, a lot of yellow and green leaves. In some places we enjoyed a

“twig tour” (leaves already off the trees ) It was a fun day. We were joined by members of the VMCCA, and Wolcott Mills

Car clubs.
